First, uninstall or disable the Google Photos app on your phone.
 
Next, enter the link https://photos.google.com in any of the web browsers available on your phone. Log into your account & then start deleting the pics one by one.
 
You can speed up this delete action on a desktop PC. 
On that, you can select multiple pics through the combination of shift + mouse key & then delete the selected.

There is no separate Google Photos account. If you have deleted your Google Account, you will have to reinstate that first.

I specifically got a notification from Google Photos asking if I wanted to continue with them - I inadvertently said no - and they responded that I would have until August 10th or there about to access my photos. This is not the Googles photo with an icon that looks like a flower.  This is the Google Photos  icon that looks more like a windmill!!

I do not know of a limitation of the number of people who can add photos to an album. In fact they do not add photos, but a link allowing others to see the photo on their own account.

Yes if they want to collaborate, comment etc. Not for just viewing. 
 
"Can they all add photos and descriptions for the photo?"
They can add a description to their own photos, not to photos added by others. They can also delete (only) their own photos. The owner of the album can delete, but not edit photos added by others.

  • You can invite specific people to view an album, but only when they have a Google account (which may be based on a non Gmail address). 
  •  People who you invited using that option can still share further with other people, but you will see in the albums who they shared with. 
  • It's not really safe: anyone you invited can also add the photos to his/her own account and share further without you notice.
Conclusion: you must trust the ones you share with anyway.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some difference in file format or metadata.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in this article on how to avoid duplicates in the first place & how to remove the ones which are already there.

You already took the first step by sharing your school account with your personal account. 
 
When you are viewing an album, look at the top of the screen for a small cloud-shaped icon with an arrow inside it. By tapping that icon, you will be adding a copy of every picture in that album that isn't "yours" to your current account. This means that if those pictures are deleted or removed by the other account, you will still have your copy of them in your Photos library. 
 
As for pictures not in an album, you can still easily save all of those as well, but you must set it up from a desktop/laptop computer. 
 
Here are the instructions from the official Google Photos Help page about sharing:
 
Save your partner's photos
If you save your partner’s photos, they’ll appear in your Google Photos library, search results and can be used for personalized creations.
Any photos you save from a shared library won’t take up storage, unless your partner stops sharing their library with you, or deletes the original copy.
  1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
  2. On the left, click Sharing People.
  3. Above "Shared library," click your partner's name. Then, click More More and then Shared library settings. 
  4. Click Save to your library. 
    • All photos: Any photo in the shared library will be saved. 
    • Photos of specific people: Select from your face groups. When Google Photos recognizes any of those face groups from your partner’s photos, it’ll save the photos automatically to your Google Photos library.
  5. Click Done. 
If you didn’t save a photo from your partner’s shared library, and your partner deletes it from their Photos account, it will also be deleted from the shared library.

I did the same thing with my school email, but I logged out and tried to log back in, but it would not let me log back in. It said "Unable to login as ______________. Contact your G Suite Administrator." I logged out before I was able to share it with my personal email, so now my pictures are locked in the school email account that I can't get into. Once your photos have been permanently deleted then you won't be able to get them back from Google Photos, first you'll need to check to see if they're still in your bin. You can find out how to do this by following the instructions at this link here.
 
There are apps that you can use on Android that may be able to restore deleted files, if you click this link here it'll take you a Play Store search for restoring deleted photos, you'll be able can find the highest rated apps to see if they help.

You can find your photos in https://photos.google.com/ when they have been backed up to Google Photos. That may be the case when "Backup and sync" was turned ON on the phone. Photos that are only on the phone obviously cannot be recovered.

You cannot prevent videos from being uploaded to Google Photos when they are in a folder set to be synced. Folders under DCIM (like Camera) are always backed up when Backup and sync is turned ON. 
You can turn Backup and sync OFF, move the videos to a folders that is not synced, and then (temporarily) turn Backup and sync ON.
