Google Photos is pulling photos from folders i have not even given it permission to upload from on my Samsung s21 ultra's gallery. I'd like it to only upload pictures from my camera folder, the app says it does this already unless i specify the other folders which isnt currently it seems to ignore the granular control. As far as i can see its pulling photos from the overall view in gallery which has every photo on my phone. I dont want my cloud storage being used for screenshots/memes/gifs etc just photos taken by my camera. Either this is some kind of bug or coding error as ive already tried to reinstall the app and clear data for it.

Hi, Angus F 3247
Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.
The Google Photos app acts like a portal viewer & shows all photos & videos from the phone.
That doesn't mean photos from all folders are backed up.
You can crosscheck that by visiting the link https://photos.google.com
Answer:
I dont think you understand what i meant. The google Photos app on my phone has a backup and sync feature that I'm supposed to have granular control of what folders get synced to my cloud storage. As shown below and stated by the app only my camera folder should be backed up provided none of the other folders are enabled, and they are not.

Answer:
Yes, but you own photos have been in the Camera-folder before you have moved them into other folders (wrongly named albums in the Samsung gallery). So they stay synced with the cloud and deleting in the Photos-app also will delete them in gallery.
The next mistake also is made by Samsung by putting the screenshot folder in the DCIM-folder and Google made a follow-up mistake to include all subfolders in DCIM and naming it "Camera".
And that causes a lot of confusion and unwanted behavior.
How bigger they got how less brains they get :-)
Sorry
Answer:
No error by Google D(igital)C(amera)IM(ages)
Google recommends manufacturers put all other types in the Pictures folder or their own folders.
Answer:
Google has no DCIM - that's a main folder in Android , but Samsung (and Google) put a lot of folders in DCIM like shown below on the forumsite:

But Google makes the mistake to name DCIM "Camera" and that is not correct.
Install Google Gallery Go to see the real picturefolders (if not empty) in DCIM.
Answer:
I Agree with what you're saying @Rinus - I can see that the DCIM folder contains all of the folders that are being pulled into my cloud storage, I've also verified that the other folders outside of DCIM are not being pulled. So that at least answers my questions about why but, this unfortunately doesnt resolve the issue. If as @Philly says is (which it probably is), then you could argue that this is the other developers or manufacturers fault for putting these folders in there. However it would be a lot of effort for me to personally try and get each developer etc to change where they have these folders if they will ever change them anyway - see below for a thread I found thats 5 years old while trying to find ways of moving the folders via the apps themselves. They gave up and came up with some botched solutions to have scripts or apps move the files elsewhere (specifically for Facebook in this case), which is anything but ideal.
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/151229/change-facebook-and-others-photo-saving-folder
Conclusion/ solution:
This can all be resolved if google were to actually code their app to actually pull photos from a specified folder not just " oh its the camera folder (DCIM) which you can't change, but you can kinda control these others, and its not our fault because we told the developers not to do this". If the User just has to choose the folder/s on setup with full control, it fixes the issue regardless of what other developers/manufacturers do.
Agree?
If so where and how can we get Google to fix this? Otherwise ill be forced to just not use it and use another platform that actually has a well thought out app - I'm using google as its all combined and for ease of use, but this is proving to be a pain as im not going to be faffing about with scripts and other apps to move files from folder to folder.
Answer:
@Angus
The general complaint merely restricts to companies who place the screenshots folder in DCIM instead of Pictures like Google seems to advise them if I believe Philly and I am not aware that you simply can ask "Samsung" not to do that anymore.
But instead you can ask Google via the feedback-option under your profile to show all (filled) folders in DCIM separately so that users can decide about syncing their scans and screenshots themselves.
Good luck
PS: the subfolders named Google Photos, Photoseditor and Restored are problematic because they are directly related to GP-functions like storing Collages.
Answer:
The PS says it all, if Google made the DCIM Sub-folders selectable they would have to redesign the app to protect app related functions. Are they going to redesign? Maybe long term if the feedback or social media creates a lot of noise. An S10 review quotes - The capture screenshots are stored within the internal memory, here's the path; Internal Memory/Pictures/Screenshots. This is the default path for the screenshots users capture. We cannot change this default path - so maybe thy are changing.
Answer:
@Philly
We are volonteers - no Google employees, so I only can speak about my own Samsung A40 and that stores my screenshots in the DCIM-folder. I am not aware of or interested in other settings.

Both my wife and I have tons of albums in our Google Photos. When we want to share our travel photos with friends and family, we normally share it via link. However, we start to see this behavior with some albums recently where sharing an album via link creates a blank album with nothing in it. For example, I list my albums. I either go to Album-1 or simply click on the 3 dots on the album cover. I click share, Create link, and Copy Link. As soon as I click on Copy link it takes me to an album page with the same album title, today's date as the album date, with no images in it. I don't know if the sharing has been like this before (i.e. creating a duplicate album with images in it), but for some albums it is simply creating a blank album with no images in them. Some other albums work fine (as I click on Copy Link it takes me to a page filled with photos I intended to share). Why some albums behave differently than others? How do we fix this?

@Bonnie
Not clear which mail-app you are using, so I assume the standard Gmail-app (the M).
Just start in the Google Photos app and select that picture by holding your finger on it for a while. That tap the Sharing symbol (lying V) and choose M at the bottom.
Then you after some typing and filling the right adress, you can send the mail.
That's all.
PS: you can select up to about 3 photos but never a movie. If you select more pictures, the app will propose you to send then in a smaller size, but then they loose too much quality and data - then you better can select to send them as a link to your cloudcopies.

Hello Makwana Chirag ,
If you have uploaded photos on google photos and deleted it please take a look at the below info.
Following is text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos:
Restore photos & videosIf you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app
.
- At the bottom, tap Library
Trash
.
- Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
- At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
- In your phone’s gallery app
- In your Google Photos library
- In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
Important:
- If you delete a photo or video that’s backed up in Google Photos, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
- If you delete an item from your Android device without it being backed up, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
- If you see a photo or video in Google Photos that you think you deleted, it might be on a removable memory card. To delete it, use your device’s gallery app.
Empty your trashIf you see a request to "Delete permanently" when you try to move an item to trash, your trash is full. Your trash can hold 1.5GB.Important: If you empty your trash, you permanently delete any items in your trash.Don't see the photo or video? If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
- You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
- You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
When you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.
The information on the following Google Photos Help pages will help you become more familiar with finding, deleting, and restoring your pictures:
If you deleted pictures or videos that were not previously backed up to your account through the Google Photos app, then unfortunately there's nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this Help Community can do to recover them.
Files that existed only on your phone, ones that were never uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered or restored by a cloud storage service. Simply put, Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.
Thanks.

Hello Kushagra 7359,
Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried.
1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.
If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.
3. Review other options
- if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
- have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
- there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
- you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
- If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.
Thanks.

I've been trying to delete thousands of photos because they're taking unnecessary space in my 100 GB plan. However, even if I deleted hundreds or thousands of photos and videos my back up usage doesn't change. It keeps getting closer to my limit. How can I free up back up space?
Answer:
If these photos were uploaded in high quality in the very past, they were not counted by Google and thereby you don't see any difference. And after deleting 500, you need to empty the trash also and then wait a day.
But it also is possible that you have a Google Photos folder on Drive which is filled until July 2019. Normally that content was not counted, but if you take away the corresponding files from Photos, they start to count and there the total stays stable. Check on drive.google.com/drive/my-drive and delete the Google Photos section - also from Drive-trash.
Good luck

Thanks.

@Rani
All you did, does not make sense because it always are secundary factors that cause problems, like bad wifi, some battery-saving setting, not allowed to work in background while doing a lot of other things etc.
And you will have a bulk on phone waiting, maybe including many fat video files which cause large delays.
See Google Tips
Hope this helps.
PS: be aware that all wil get uploaded in a great stream on photos.google.com and that you need to build thematic albums yourself - also for sharing. But the app only shows what you have on phone.
Additional folders like from social media can be included but also should be converted into albums because these media ruïne the files and strip original dates.

I'm trying to figure out how to change where the pictures are placed in my collages. It's extremely frustrating when the collage turns out janky because of how the pictures are placed. It's not in the edit section and it does not pop up when you make a collage.
Answer:
Hi Kai,
>>>> Can you change the way the pictures are out in collages?
I agree, it can be frustrating.
The built-in collage tool does not have many features.. If you do this frequently, you might want a dedicated collage / photo stitch app.. https://www.tomsguide.com/best-picks/best-photo-collage-apps
Some of the dedicated features like ~cropping within the collage~, etc.
Good luck, Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

How do you adjust the speed between pictures in slideshows?
Hi Gary,
Google Photos doesn't unfortunately support adjusting the playback speed of slideshows. A workaround is to use a different slideshow app.
You may send your feedback and suggestions to the Google Photos team as these instructions explain under "Send feedback to the Google Photos team" https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6156065
