I'm confident  that it would work if I had that option in my settings, but without that I'm still lost.
I believe it's just a click away if I could find it where.

So I have a whopping 28gb that need to be removed.  I have tried lots of times clicking on the "free up space" like usual.  (I've had this app for years) and nothing happens.  Not sure what to do? I cleared cache under the app settings. I Uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Not sure what else to do

Answer:

Google did not come with a solution sofar, but there maybe a few reasons that the function does not operate as expected:
  1. The content is not in internal memory but on sd and then you have to give permission in the app-settings that Google Photos may delete on sd also.
  2. You have some storage manager running in your system settings.
  3. If part of you memory is filled with yesterday shooted fat 4K movies, check if backup is ready under your profile and if these videos are processed and can be played on photos.google.com in the Chrome-app
If none are you best can install the simple Google Files app and start deleting an old part of your collection - say everything from 2020 after verifying if that content is present on photos.google.com
Sorry - no Google here, just volonteers.

PS: just carried-out a free-up without problems, but that was 2.2 GB only.

Answer:

Thank you for this.  I decided to just select all and delete all the videos and photos in my camera.  Then,  went back and clicked on free up space. That worked. I think the gb size was just too large and caused the site to crash. Thank you for your help!

Answer:

Good to hear Kayla and thanks for replying.
But then the app should do it in several smaller steps and warn about that.

I do hope that you don't have deleted in the Google Photos app, because then you also have deleted your safety copies at Google - hopefully they still are in trash then on the Library.
Have a nice weekend (hopefully).

Hi, Ruqayah Vachiat

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

To unhide a person that you hid before, please follow these steps.
  • Tap the search icon at the bottom .
  • Tap view all to see the thumbnails of all the persons in people & pets.
  • Tap the three dots at the top right corner
  • Tap on the menu "Hide & show". Please note this menu works like a toggle. If you tap once, the hidden faces become visible. If you tap a second time, then all hidden persons hide again.
  • Now you will see all the hidden persons with a symbol of eye & a slash across that.
  • Tap on the eye once. Please note, the eye icon also acts as a toggle. Tap once, the person will be unhidden. Tap a second tome & then the eye will reappear hiding the person once again.
  • Once the eye symbol is gone, the thumbnail of the person will become visible again.

I want to recover my photos, which were permanently deleted from my google photos as well as from bin.

I want to recover them

Answer:

Hi, Madhavi

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, once a user deletes something permanently despite a warning message or allows the content to time out in the bin, Google doesn't maintain any backup.
There is no way to get back the content through Google Photos.

Nevertheless, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Answer:

I want to recovery my photos deleted from google photos.
Those photos have been backed up from my mail, and due to some issues they got permanently deleted, I want to get pics recover of google photos pics.
Given apps can recover only deleted photos which are taken in this phone, however my query is to recover photos of google photos which were backed up from my another phone(that old phone does not exist anymore now)

Answer:

Hi,  Madhavi

Thanks for your reply

However, Google photos never deletes something spontaneously without any user initiated action.

Do you share your phone or the account credentials with someone?

Further, there is a common misconception about backup.
Google Photos app acts as a portal viewer.
That shows the pics from the phone + cloud.
However, that creates a wrong impression about backup. Seeing a picture through Google Photos doesn't mean that's on the cloud.

Hence, unless you check the message "Backup complete" on the backup & sync tab & also verify the content through the web link, you can't be assured of backup.

Further, we tend to keep several folders out of backup.
Some social media apps hide their downloads & all these items miss reaching the cloud.

Additionally, many users adopt a batch mode for backup to save on the internet data. However, that creates an inherent problem of incomplete backup.

Have you verified all these facts?

Answer:

Really appreciate your efforts for replying me back.
How can I check them in cloud?  As I understood google photos is a layer BTW cloud and phone, so please let me know, how can I login to cloud and find my backups?
How can I check my back up folders in cloud?
Please assist me on this.

Once again, I really thankful to your team!!

Answer:

Hi,  Madhavi

Thanks for your reply

To view the pics on the cloud, enter the link https://photos.google.com in any of the web browsers available on your phone. Log into your account & then see whether the photos become visible.

Hi,  June Cooper

Thanks for your reply

Although there are multiple ways to transfer the content from the internal memory of the phone to an SD card, doing so through Google Photos allows retaining the backup and sync aspect.
Please follow the steps below to achieve the transfer.
  • Open Google Photos.
  • Tab Library.
  • Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device like Camera, Screenshots etc.
  • Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
  • You can also long-press and stroke down while still in a pressed condition, to select a batch.
  • Next, tap the 3 dot menu top right.
  • Tap Move to folder.
  • Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create.
Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos, and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if you delete that using the Google Photos app.

Hi, Kishore Kumar 7785

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

There can be multiple reasons for the backup not to happen.

# The quantum of photos to be backed is high.
# WIFI connectivity is intermittent. Too many devices connected to the same router thus restricting the bandwidth.
# Download & upload speeds are too asymmetric.
# Google Photos app is not allowed to use
  • Data in the background
  • Mobile data
  • Mobile data while roaming
# Activation of data saver through the settings.
# Putting a limit on the daily use of mobile data through the settings in the app.
# Putting a limit on the use of total data in a month through the settings in the phone.
# Activating battery saver or super saver mode.

Can you please go through these checks & confirm that these are addressed?

Copy a photo to a text

Do you mean a textmessage or a scientific text written in Google Docs which needs to be illustrated?
Assume the first: probably your text-app is too primitive to coöperate with world-famous Google Photos.
Then select that photo (or video) in Google Photos, hit the Share-icon (lying V) and choose Make link at the bottom.
Then go to your text and hold you finger in the box for a while and choose Paste to get the link there.
Then the receiver can see (and download) the photo by hitting the link.
Good luck

If that album on the lowest part of the Library-page was created by, you simply can open it and then choose Remove album under its famous 3 dots right-up.
The photos will remain on the Photos-page.
Be aware that albums don't take additional space on phone or in your account and are meant to make a thematic collection which can be viewed on other devices and may be shared.

So after 8 months in Thailand I had a phone full of photos.  To make room for photos of my friends wedding I deleted all the photos from my camera roll on my iPhone thinking they were backed up on google photos.  I thought this because I could see the photos on the app.  It seems that it wasn't actually uploaded as I have lost them on.  Not on google drive or in the trash.  I desperately want these photos back!?!?! Can anyone help?

Answer:

Hi there,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

As you've mentioned that you've deleted the photos from your Camera roll, it looks like the photos and videos didn't backed up properly to your Google Photos account. Could you please check if you're able to see the photos and videos on web (photos.google.com)? If not, please check in Recently Deleted album as you can always recover the deleted pictures from your iOS Photos " Recently Deleted album" box.

Also, please check for the following things:

1. Can you see them via Picasa?
2. Are they in the trash?
3. Check the Assistant for the status of your backups.
4. Ensure you are logged in to the correct Google account.

If they are still missing, then unfortunately there isn't a way to retrieve them. Going forward, I'd suggest deleting the photos and the videos using the Google Photos Free up Space option to avoid any data loss as it is the best way to remove a backed-up video/image from your phone, leaving it in the cloud, and this will only delete the files which are backed up completely on Google Photos. To do so, please follow the steps from "Free up space on your phone" help center article.

Also, try checking your backup status on your phone and check if you're able to see the photos and videos on web (photos.google.com) before you delete them on your phone:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
  2. At the top left, touch the menu icon  > Assistant.
  3. Read the first card. If it says:
    • "Waiting for connection" or "Waiting for Wi-Fi": You need to either change your settings or connect to a Wi-Fi or mobile network. Touch the card to change your settings.
    • "Back up & sync is off": Touch "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
    • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our upload requirements:
      • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels
      • Videos can't exceed 10GB
    • "Backing up photos" or "Backup complete": This means your photos and videos should be saved.
Just a heads up: Photos and videos that aren't backed up will have this cloud icon  or circular-arrow icon based on the version of Google Photos App on your phone.

If you're still facing the issue, try the steps from this "My photos aren't being backed uphelp center article.

Let me know if this helps.

Best,
Sonya
