Did you ever see the photos in another location, such as on the photos.google.com website or the app on another device?

Just because you can see photos by opening the Google Photos app, that doesn't necessarily mean they've been backed up. Google Photos also acts as a viewer for photos that are stored on your phone.

Your profile at the top of the Photos section of the app will tell you the status of your backup. Unfortunately it does not indicate the status of individual photos.

This indicates backup is pending (recent photos not yet backed up). The arrow will be gray if it's waiting for wifi

Dotted line around around profile indicates upload in progress, the line turns solid to indicate progress, then disappears once the upload is completed

This indicates backup is disabled for this device or account

Could these photos also be backed up anywhere else- service provider backup (I know Verizon offers this), Dropbox, OneDrive, etc? I suggest looking in every possible place just in case.

So i'm trying to move my photos in Google drive into Google photos using the new "Upload from Google Drive" option.

I select the photos that i want to import and it details on screen that its processing my files.

Once complete however, if i go into google photos and look at the photos I've uploaded today using the URL

I only see a few of the photos that I've uploaded not all of them and rest can't be found anywhere. I get the same thing is i try and upload 20 or 200 at a time.

Anyone else come across this and know how to resolve it? Where are the rest of the photos going?

Is there any information that you can give us about the filetypes your are trying to import, because Google Drives is more or less accepting everything, but Photos is much more critical. And if your setting in https://photos.google.com/settings is on High Quality, supported raw-files need to be converted to jpg's

But maybe they should be accepted and then we have to report that as a bug. On Drive you can see the file-extensions like IMG_1234.jpg immediately.

PS: be aware that hidden files in folders also can play a bad role.

Then I would not expect any problems indeed unless part of them already are on Google Photos because GP tries to prevent duplicates.

With such filetypes the import goes extremely fast which is a mystery in itself and if the files have extreme date differences, you may miss a lot.

Selection also seems a problem - maybe if you use the Firefox-browser. After openening the right Drive-folder, you must select the first file with a single click (not double) - then scroll to the last one, press & hold Shift and then select the last one with a single click and then select Open - there they should go all.

No other ideas and no Google here.

Trying to upload duplicates may indeed be a reason to skip photos.

I always upload directly to an album: then all photos should appear in the album, also the ones that were already uploaded and did not upload again. But that does not seem possible from Drive.
When you look at "Recently added" only the photos that were really uploaded are shown. That makes it difficult to find out which ones are missing, especially when there are photos from different periods in time.
Another user had an issue when uploading from a computer to https://photos.google.com: some photos were skipped. He added the new photos to an album, then clicked "Add photos". That brings you to the library https://photos.google.com where all photos that are already in the album are automatically selected. That may allow to find out which ones are missing. It turned out that the missing photos were indeed duplicates.

The GP-app never shows your backupped photos, unless you put them in albums on the Library-page. But Google is not telling that, so everybody is confused.

You need to view your private site at photos.google.com in the Chromebrowser to see what is stored at Google.

Perhaps almost nothing because the backup-function has hardly worked for reasons unknown to me.

Wrong settings, always busy with other apps etc. etc.

So we only can guess:

Switch-off backupping for the time being to prevent timeconsuming uploads.
Your internetspeed seems extremely low (0.73 KB) - switch to using mobile data in the general connection settings. And then leave the app open and swith-off any battery saving and also allow for background operation. Restrict to minor other activities.

On a new device, you hardly have images stored and Google must download thousands of thumbnails for viewing your old collection.

Good morning. If you don't have internet access at home, and you don't have sufficient data on your phone, your only option is to find an available WiFi signal to connect to the internet. You can talk to friends or neighbors and see if they can give you access to their WiFi, otherwise you'll have to find access at a public place. Many cafes, restaurants, and libraries have free WiFi you can use.

Once you've found an available WiFi signal, open the Google Photos app and the pictures you took with your phone's camera should begin to automatically upload to your Google Photos library in the cloud. At the top of the Google Photos app you'll see a message telling you how many pictures are being backed up. When it's finished, that message will change to tell you all photos have been successfully backed up.
