I don't understand because not much is changed in Backup & Sync because if Upload to Google Photos is checked in the main settings they will be not only synced to Drive but also uploaded (=added, but not synced) to your library on Google Photos - tested recently. 

So check your preferences again, but if switched-on I do think that only new pictures will get uploaded, but not the forgotten ones.

You have been using Google Drive to sync photos to My Drive, but as you know, the onward sync to Google Photos has been disabled.

 

Another option is to use the option under My computer, or My Mac, or My laptop to choose the export folder with the option to Upload to Google Photos.  See the screenshot visible online, replace my chosen folder Originals with your folder Exported with a small number of examples, followed if successful by more of your exported photos.

It is my understanding that there is now no possible way to directly automatically sync photos from Google Drive to Google Photos. I have a camera with a wifi feature and it can upload directly to Google Drive. It used to be an easy an automatic process, but now it is a several step manual process (where you have to select each photo because there is no batch select). In the past, pictures in My Computer section uploaded with B & Sync were synchronized with pictures uploaded to Google Photos by an option, so I drew an arrow for that meaning from My Computer to Google Photos.

Actually, image files are uploaded to one location of a server having a Picasa system (not Photos, not Drive), and access permissions to the files are given through Google Drive and Google Photos.

However, when drawing a diagram, I thought that I should ignore the actual structure and simplify it so that everyone can understand it.

Currently, when "Upload newly added photos" is enabled, it will be uploaded to Google Photos without syncing with Google Drive. 

So I added another bent arrow that was arranged and drawn so that anyone can easily imagine the function.

Although drawing is not an actual design structure, I dared to draw another line to emphasize that it was not involved with Google Drive.

It is your freedom to say this drawing style is mistake, but in the first place as actual design structure, can't say that even the drawing like "as it is a single arrow upload from the My Computer section" is .

Also, about why the new path for the command to Upload from Drive is missing, that is because I draw JUST about the structure of B & Sync and the AUTOMATIC syncing between Google Photos and Drive. 

If I feel necessary to explain for new command as one of the manual uploading feature of Google Photos in some thread, I can write by text. In that case, I will decide whether to use what diagram depending on contents of thread, since I have already many kinds of situation's diagram.

That's ugly, but such questions can hardly be answered. 

First: an sd-card can't contain albums - it only can contain folders and that is something very different. 

If that folder also was shown on the Library-page of the Google Photos app directly under Pictures on device (but not under Albums), there has been a chance that its contents was backupped (= copied to her private Google-cloud) and then its contents must be somewhere deep down on the Photos page of the app. Perhaps you can type a word on top of the Search-page which is connected to these photos and you may find some back. 

Else no explanation possible why the folder got emptied - perhaps due to her free-up space action.

I did miss your later addition about trials to copy the sd-folders (no albums) to computer, but you don't tell how you are doing that. By manipulating these tiny cards in and out, they easily can get damaged - so it just is very dangerous handling and not needed when the phone was connected to computer via its usb-cable. 

 

No further help from here possible I am afraid, unless by some nerd in her environment. 

And the relation of the problems with wrong actions within Google Photos stays unclear for me.

Once a user deletes something permanently despite a warning message or allows the content to time out in the bin, Google doesn't maintain any backup.

There is another complaint about the same problem to, so I will escalate the problem towards the Google team. But it are holiday-time, but even without that excuse, they are extremely slow over there because it is tuff problem to analyse. 

My advise: open the album again and choose Edit under the 3 dots and then choose New to old under the arrows and hit the V left-up. Then repeat, but now Old to new and hit the V left-up. 

Is the order in the album then still okay? 

If so an you let fill a fresh book again, is the order then okay? 

Or still chaotic?

There are other third-party image editors that have better sharpening tools, but if the picture is too out of focus there isn't much that can be done no matter what app or program you use.
