Same problem here. I noticed that some 90% of my photos don't have geo tags anymore. Not on the Google Photos app, not on the web Google Photos. It is very inconvenient -  I cannot search photos by location anymore.... Please help. I don't recall tweaking any settings anytime lately...

I know the original post is old but I don't see an answer so I'm hoping someone will see this. 

In my case, the geocoding is working. I can see it in the Photos app. But I CAN'T see it when I open Google Photos in a web browser. Yet I CAN see location for photos taken by other people in both the app and web browser. Why can't I see the location for my own photos in the web browser?

I think Google did something with this.  I have been trying to figure out how to get location data via a script for my photos and it seems they disabled this functionality.  It is very inconvenient.  Google, if you are seeing this, can you provide some insight into this?

Without me still understanding how, I have accidentally let my phone delete a few of my picture folders. Luckily I had all of them backuped in Google Photos. However, when checking for the photos to be safe in Google photos, the not a single photo appear but the content was made up of all black pictures and videos which could not be viewed. Now the folders have disappeared from there completely as well. I have chacked the bin, they are not in there. Better yet, the bin is completely empty. Luckily, some photos of 1 year back are there but more than 2000 photos of this year are not there... Please please help me out..... I spent Years to collect that and I was having trust on Google So... I use to Back up photos and delete from device without any fear..... and earlier I was able to restore. But This time not.... As you're trying to arrange the pictures in chronological order in the Google Photos, just to let you know that photos by default backup in chronological order.

If not, when you open an album, you can sort accordingly:

1. Click "More options" (3-dots icon)
2. Click "Edit album"

   Another issue in album sorting is those deleted photos came back 30 minutes after my earlier attempt of unsuccessful sorting.  Questions I raised are all in the ALBUM's edit photo - sort by latest first.  A perfect sort of album photos allows me to see all the activities taken place hour by hour but there are always some photos out of sync which defeats the purpose of creating an album solely for the trip or a special event.    Then that folder is unsuitable for Google Photos for reasons unknown to us, because you don't specify anything.

   If you phone got empty due to misunderstanding the free-up space option (as usual with everyone because Google never learns), your photos still can be viewed and shared via the Google Photos app (why else you have a backup there). And if you need one for some social media app which never has heard of Google, simply open that photo in the Google-app, press the 3 dots and choose download. 

   You also can install the Google One app temporarily, because then you can download 200 recent pictures for free - all other methods are too difficult.

   However, once a user deletes something permanently despite a warning message or allows the content to time out in the bin, Google doesn't maintain any backup. 

   There is no way to get back the content through Google Photos.

    

   Nevertheless, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;

   Since a photo isn't being saved/synced to your Google Photos account, just to let you know that, photos larger than 75MB or 100MP, videos larger than 2GB, and items smaller than 256 x 256 can't be backed up on Google Photos.

   
   

   Also, try checking your backup status:

   1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
   2. At the top left, touch the menu icon  > Assistant.
   3. Read the first card. If it says:
   • "Waiting for connection" or "Waiting for Wi-Fi": You need to either change your settings or connect to a Wi-Fi or mobile network. Touch the card to change your settings.
   • "Back up & sync is off": Touch "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
   • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our upload requirements:
     • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels
     • Videos can't exceed 10GB
   • "Backing up photos" or "Backup complete": This means your photos and videos should be saved.

   
   

   If the issue still persists, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps:

   
   

   1. Sign out from your Google account and sign in back.
   2. Uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos updates. (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > Google Photos app > Uninstall Updates > OK). As long as you have a strong Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), your Play Store app will update to the latest version within a few minutes.
   3. Try clearing your app data which is the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. After you clear your data, sign in and turn "back up & sync" on again.Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
   

   a. Tap Apps.

   b. Select Photos in the list.

   c. Tap Clear data.

   4. Restart your device.

   You can add a person through the following steps.

    

   Tap to open the photo which contains unidentified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots .
   If the app had failed to include some faces in that picture, then you will see a prompt "XX faces available to add".

    

   Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge. (An icon of a pencil ).

    

   That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom.
   Tap on the + sign on each thumbnail. 
   Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time.
   You can select the right one.

    

   If not, tap the + sign at the top right corner of the screen.
   That would create a new grouping altogether.

    

   Once created, the app may take some time to bring all the related pictures to this new grouping.
   Otherwise, you can go through the collection & add the photos to the newly created group, manually, through the same steps as described above.

    

   PS. The edit feature may not be available in some regions. If you happen to be from that, then regretfully nothing can be done.

   Both accounts have upload in original quality in the settings. 

   
   

   The video is uploaded in Account 1 and shows 25mb in the Info, then shared to Account 2. 

   
   

   After saving (save to library, not download to device) the video with Account 2 will initially show the full 25mb in the Info however remain "unable to be played" . A few moments later the video will be playable however the file size will be 1-2mb and highly compressed. 

   
   

   When downloading I only receive the compressed 1-2mb size file, not the original 25mb. 

   
   

   I've tried a few times, confirmed "original quality" setting, and waited in case google photos was still uploading the original quality video in the backend however nothing seems to work.

   A 25 MB video hardly can be a real and relevant video, but why you don't download from the shared "album" immediately - no need to store in your own library because then it gets compressed to the quality value you have chosen in your backupsettings (probably) and that easily can be a factor 10 in filesize. But then it should be playable in almost the same quality (if you can use the word "quality").

   Can you try to do so through another route? Please enter the link https://photos.google.com in any of the web browsers available on your phone. Log into your account & then see whether the photos become visible.

   Question: I'm unable to open any folder

   You need to connected to the internet and to be logged-in if you want to open any albums at the bottom of the Library-page. 

    

   For viewing folders you better can install the simple Google Gallery Go app.

    

   PS: if your phone is out of storage space almost, you also can have troubles like that. If so, you should stop with shooting photos and videos immediately and clean-up the oldest from 2020 and before.

   However, had you backed up your pics to Google Photos?

   Further, did you delete those through Google Photos?

   If yes, then you should be finding the deleted pics in the bin, unless you have emptied the bin also.
