I was forced to back up all my photos/videos to Google Photos while I was abroad, as I forgot before…

I was forced to back up all my photos/videos to Google Photos while I was abroad, as I forgot before I left. I'm back now and the photos have taken up about 85-90% of my Google Drive storage space (?!) and combined with my original space I have now used up my 15GBS storage. I'm not buying extra storage as I do not need it, my photos/videos are all backed up on my laptop.

I want to delete ALL the photos from Google Photos and STOP using it. I do not want my stuff on the cloud unnecessarily. But I have found that Google Photos will only do so & delete the originals from my device too. This is ridiculous, and frankly an invasion of my privacy. I should be allowed to delete my personal data from a cloud when I choose to and not have it deleted permanently.

I have tried disabling back up to Google Photos, backing my stuff up on my laptop, then deleting all from Google Photos, and restoring my stuff. But then Google Photos is taking up all my storage again.

Please help me delete my photos off Google Photos, NOT my phone, I cannot receive work emails anymore as I have run out of space.

A simple solution is to shut off your phone, then open a browser on a computer (not your phone) to photos.google.com, then select Menu (three-short horizontal bars in upper left, then select Settings (gear icon) then select Recover Storage (a button-bar near top of screen under Upload Size for Photos and Videos).

This process will convert all your photos and videos to High Quality, which will not count against your storage quota and can be stored for free. There would be no reason to delete them then.

Thereafter, going forward, when you restart your phone just delete the Google Photos App, or set it not to Backup & Sync on your phone, or set Backup & Sync on your phone to backup in High Quality (not Original) so that future backups are free.

This does seem to be a way of sorting out this problem for most people. Definitely something that would help! For me, I don't want my personal photos to be on an online cloud regardless so I wanted my photos to be OFF of Google Photos completely, don't want it to be stored there.

I solved this problem myself as I had to get my emails coming ASAP. I first Backed Up ALL my photos and videos to my Laptop. Then I went to Google Photos settings, turned off "Back Up & Sync" and then chose the "Free Up Space" option. This deleted all 14GBS of Google Photos (as well as the originals on my phone). I then went back to my gallery and had to delete every single little trace of ANY photo or video left behind. After this, I went back to Google Photos to check if it was empty, but more & more of my photos kept on popping up, even though there were none left on my phone? So I kept refreshing Google Photos and deleting any new photos that came up. I went through the "unsaved creations" and stylized photos etc that Google Photos had created and deleted all of those too. There is no "delete all" option so this took me hours. More photos kept coming? So I went to Google Drive and deleted the folder called Google Photos. I emptied Google Drive trash. I then went and emptied the trash in Google Photos. Finally, no more photos were popping up. I then Restored my photos & videos from my laptop. My space has gone from 15.01GBS to about 274MBs. What an unnecessary thing to have to go through. There is NO reason why Google Photos should be SYNCING photos and not just Backing them up.

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com

If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on

2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

3. Review other options

if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Check the app trash to make sure there are no photos and videos mistakenly deleted
- Empty the trash
tap the account icon at the top right
tap your email address and select Use without an account
Power down/up or restart the device
sign in again making sure you are using the correct email
Do not turn on Backup & sync
Wait until Getting photos has finished

Go to the Photos tab and tap to open the latest photo and look at the top right to see if there is a cloud icon indicating the photo or video is not backed up. If the cloud icon is present tap it to Backup the photo or video.

If that works, stroke from the right to check all other photos and hopefully the culprits will be found. Large videos are the worst offenders along with large numbers on SD cards

You can also pinch the screen to show and then select a month of photos and use the 3 dot option to Backup now. This will not upload already backed up photos. Selecting the month and the absence of the 3 dot option to Backup indicates there are no candidates in that month.

Once all months are clear, tap the account icon; Photos settings; Backup & sync; turn on, checking the settings are correct and using the correct email account.

First, I’m not sure why you need to know because all High quality uploads remain free forever.

The only way to find out how much storage is being used is to use Google Takeout.

If you want confirmation of the Google Photos usage you can follow the steps below.

Go to Google Dashboard and expand the Photos tab then left click on the 3 dots and select Download data. If you wait a minute until 'All photos albums included' pops up then click on it and deselect all.
Then scroll down and select all the year albums Photos from 2020 etc. You will now get a single copy of each photo, one json file per photo, and one filename-edited.jpg for each edited photo.
The contents of all manually created albums will also be in the year folders so there is no need to include them because they do not use storage allocation. An album is a collection of links pointing to the year album copies.
Continue to create the download and wait for completion then you will see a summary of the Takeout which will give you the total size. For a quick estimate choose the 50GB output size, there is no need to download unless you want to create an offline archive for security.

An initial question for you is whether you ever recall seeing your images anywhere but on the phone (or similar device) that you used to take the pictures. More specifically, did you ever see your images at Google Photos (photos.google.com) on a browser of your laptop or tablet or other device? If not, though this is no comfort, I know, it is possible that the images were never actually backed up but perhaps merely queued to back up (a distinction that is sadly confusing on many phones and tablets). If the answer is that you have viewed the photos at the Google Photos site, there is an excellent chance that they are there and that you will be able to recover them.

In any case, in searching Google for missing images you should check the following sites (being sure to sign in with the same Google Account you used on the phone or device with which you took the pictures):

photos.google.com/trash
get.google.com/albumarchive
drive.google.com (in the Google Photos Folder, if one exists)
https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ (Recently Added)

To assist you better, could you please let me know if you're referring to the photos in the "Photos" section or photos in the albums not being sorted by the date taken? If you're referring to the Photos in the "Photos" section then photos will sorted by the date taken and not by uploaded date.

Incase if you're referring to the photos in the album, Google Photos calculates an "Album date" for each album by taking the most recent "Date taken" from all pictures in the album and then it sorts the albums based from most recent date to oldest date. To change dates, please follow the below steps:

To change the "Date taken" of a photo at Google Photos:

Open a photo.
Click the "i" (Info) icon at the top-right.
In the Info panel, click the pencil (edit) icon.
In the "Edit date & time" window, click into the fields to change the year, month, day, time; and time zone drop-down arrow.
Click Save.

To "Batch edit" date and time:

Selecting multiple photos.
Click 3 vertical dots ("More options").
Click "Edit date & time".

I'm using Google Photos on the desktop browser, select any user's face under 'Explore'.

Next, select 'Share As Album'

Finally, go to the newly created album, and there will be a few pictures missing that were displayed within the person's "face" photos under 'Explore'.

I am unable to determine what could be causing this loss of a few photos (it seems like maybe 10% of the photos do not transfer to the new album).

Here is some more background... I am not necessarily recommending this, but you could investigate if interested.. Also, note that the way that Hidden albums in iOS behave with Google Photos may change with time and the timing of when you place items there (versus when Google Photos uploads the images) may impact how the process behaves.
