Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried. 

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.
 
If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos. 
 
3. Review other options
  • if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos. 
  • have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
  • there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself. 
  • you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
  • If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

By long I understand you mean file size is too big.
To reduce the photo size, you can do so through these two options in Google Photos.
  • Upload the picture in high quality. That will produce some size reduction.
  • Crop the pic to remove unwanted portions from the borders. That will give further sizer reduction.
Still, if you wish to have some more reduction, then please use another app "Snap seed" by Google.
Once installed, the editor in Google Photos shows that option through "More".
 
In the settings of Snap seed, you can do image resizing within a range from 4000 px to 800 px. Additionally, you can choose JPEG compression ranging from 95% to 85%
A combination of both options would resize the file to the desired number.

Normally you see your camera-pics only, but if you include other device folders (usual example: the Whatsapp folders) or you make a lot of screenshots, you can't prevent a mix. 
But you can hide such non-camerapics by archiving them - then they stay backupped safely. 
In addition you can create thematic albums for special categories, but albums do contain no copies, but just references to the mainstream or to the archive. 
You can do no more.

Probably that shared album (no folder) was set to show-up between your own albums and removing it there, does not remove it from the sharing-list. Then you need to select that you want to leave that albums under the 3 dots. Just a bit confusing like most Google-stuff :-)

I've set Google Photo to make High Quality copies of my  photos so they dont take drive quota. However, the analysis of the Drive shows that in Google Photos are occupied 5.6 GB. When manually viewing the files in Google Photos, I do not find anywhere files that are marked as quota-used.

On the other hand, in Google Drive I have folders outside Google Photos, which contain images and pictures with original quality and I work with. They sync as regular files and take from my disk quota for which I have paid for a larger drive space (100 GB). These files should in no way be compressed and at all  touched by Google Photo's algorithms.

Questions are:
- Is there a way to see which photos take quota only in Google Photos, because on https://drive.google.com/drive/quota are all files from the entire Drive.
- if the Recover storage button is used in the settings, what exactly will cause and how affect the photos from other folders in Google Drive.

Sorry Angel, 

there is no current method to see which photos take quota only in Google Photos.  Recover storage will compress the photo ONLY in Google Photos it will not affect any of the other folders in Google Drive where you have uploaded photos, these will stay in their original form.

Recover storage uses a very good algorithm to re-sample the photos and in my opinion causes no loss of quality. For photos >16MP it will also reduce the dimensions to 16MP which is more than adequate for photo sharing.

Google's compression algorithm is really the best I've ever seen and does a great job. But with jpeg pictures, it also compresses the RAW files from camera (?!), which then become unusable.

Anyway, if the recovery-function will only reflect on the Google Photo folders, I'll use it.

These are separate, independent services.  Between them there is no possibility of direct sync.  You can download from Prime Photos ➡ to your device ➡ and upload Photos to Google.  Only in this way is it available.

I have Amazon Prime subscription and photos from a number of years backed up on Amazon Photos. Is there a way to create a backup / move photos (with date, location details etc intact) from Amazon Photos to Google Photos? Either directly or via some third party app/platform? Downloading physically from Amazon Photos onto desktop and then uploading to Google Photos of course I know can be done but too many photos and I don't want to spend that kind of time and effort if there is an easier way. But videos of 9.9 GB take ages to upload and to get processed, especially with slow internet or too busy with other tasks. Or abnormal picturefiles in some non-compatible raw-format. 
Or restrictions on mobile data traffic. 
In the general settings the app must be allowed to work in background and not hindered by some fancy battery saving intelligence. 
No Google here - just volonteers with no problems :-)

If you delete photos they are only recoverable in 60 days if they are still in the trash.
If you deleted them from the trash you are given a warning that this action will permanently deleted your photos.If you did and they are no longer in the trash you can try a few options that might help recover some but not 100% guaranteed.
  • Contact the Google Drive team and say you want to recover files - click on the contact us option on this link.
  • You can try using a third party photo recovery app at this point to try to recover some of what was lost from your phone - just type photo recovery into the play store and see what options are available. I can't recommend any as haven't used one personally but some people do have success that way.

What you are observing is an intended feature of the "Sync" function.
Sync means that your photo library stays consistent across all devices that are signed in to your account with Google Photos.
 For example, deleting a photo from one device will delete it from everywhere, and editing a photo on the web will edit the photo on the original device.
 
In this way, once you have the "Sync" on, you should never delete anything through Google Photos either on the cloud or on the phone.
 
Still, if you want to do so, please go through this article & then proceed.

Amal wants a better design, because deletion in the Google Photos app should not delete from phone - nobody does expect that, because all are thinking that they delete at Google only
So the app has a wrong design since years because you should be able to switch the Photo-page from local to cloud and deleting on the cloud-page should not sync back to the local page. 
We only can advise to use the feedback option under your profile in order to ask for such a design and then start waiting until they get brains over there.
