To turn face group feature on:

  4. Turn Face grouping on.

Once you delete them from the trash they are permanently deleted; they are only recoverable in 60 days if they are still in the trash.

You can try a few options that might help recover some but not 100% guaranteed.
  • Contact the Google Drive team and say you want to recover files - click on the contact us option on this link.
  • You can try using a third party photo recovery app at this point to try to recover some of what was lost from your phone - just type photo recovery into the play store and see what options are available. I can't recommend any as haven't used one personally but some people do have success that way.

  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Tab Library
  3. Tap the desired folder under Photos on device
  4. Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
    • You can also long press and stroke down to select a batch
  5. Tap the 3 dot menu top right
  6. Tap Move to folder
  7. Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create
Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos view and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if deleted using the Google Photos app.
 
You should also have a setting in your camera app which saves new photos to the SD card.

Those photos were on another google account before so I know they are compatible. Yes, I have raw (Nikon, Canon and Apple) but, as far as I know, they are compatible. 

I checked with dashboard and I can see that I have 22.000 pictures while on the folder I have 26.000 files. I'm assuming that 4.000 is not there, but the discrepancy between the space occupied is more intriguing. 200 Gb is a lot.

Sorry André, but I can't look into your kitchen. 

The compatibility list is on https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?hl=en&ref_topic=6156061 under "Types of Raw you can backup" and Apple is not in the list at all (if it are 4000 heic files, they even may have been neglected).  

You really have to do a general check on https://photos.google.com on some random pictures with their infopanel open and if you see 2 MB instead of 20, you are viewing jpeg files instead of raws. You can check that by downloading a few.

If the previous Google account used Google Photos Backup or direct web uploading then the compatibility isn't guaranteed as Backup and Sync is very strict regarding the list of allowed types of photo.

You should have zero quota taken up in the Google Drive section of Storage if you check at:
https://drive.google.com/drive/quota  all photos uploaded to Google Photos should indicate 0 bytes, anything else points to upload issues,

I do think the list always has been strict and restricted, but we simply can't check. And it is not clear why André is uploading all over - maybe because they were converted to jpg's on his old account and he now has started a new Google-One account - just guessing :-)

However it is not clear that if a Canon or Nikon is not listed, its files will stick on Drive (and take full storage there), or that they still will be uploaded to Photos, but then will get converted to much smaller jpg's still taking storage because he did choose Original size. 

Or he just has forgotten to include RAWs on the hidden Change-panel and only the jpg-preview files of his camera's  were synced and uploaded - just guessing again :-)

Again thanks for all of your input. All my raws are compatible, I double checked it. I also check one file of each RAW type and they are all recognized as such in the web interface.

I used to have all of these videos and photos on another account, but the number of files and the size of it was the double of what I have locally. So I decided to disconnect the account and delete all its data.

I start a new replication with a new account that is under my family Google One plan. 

The sync seemed to be ok. When I look into the dashboard I can see it has 22.000 files while locally I have 26.000. 

I'm not confident that everything is okay. The amount of files are of by 4.000 and the size by a huge 200gb difference. 

I was wondering if wouldn't be better to delete all data from this account and start the synchronization again ?

What do you think ? If you agree by this course of action, how can I delete all pictures without deleting the account nor selecting the 22.000 of them manually ?

Unfortunately there is no other method other than manually deleting, but if you can respond to these questions we may be able to work out what is wrong. There is nothing to say it won't do exactly the same thing next time.

1 When you look at  https://one.google.com/storage  What are your readings for Google Drive, Photos, and Gmail
2 When you look at https://drive.google.com/drive/quota do you see any photos or videos that you think are in Google Photos with > 0 bytes

Even if you have old raws of 10 MB average, 20.000 of them already would need 200 GB of storage on Photos alone. And 40 GB from Apple, probably including HD-video's making 240 GB together on disc. 
So you really must be much more precise to us like Peter asks you again. 
Else it makes no sense to start all over again (which is a terrible action).

@Peter, storage is 3.5 gb on Google Drive and 44.09 Gb on Photos. Nothing on Gmail and Family. I don't use gmail at this account.

I checked and there is a lot of 0 bytes files on Google Drive. There are files larger than zero. The bigger one has 5 mb, which is quite small. Also on Google Drive the folders starts at 2014 although I have pictures as old as 2000. The amount of pictures on the folders seems much less than it should be, I don't know if it is any indication of the root cause.

I load my videos and pictures either by B&S or using the app on my iPhone. I don't use Google Drive to load Pictures, just to copy back the pictures taken by the iPhone.

However, getting back the pics on your phone will defeat the whole purpose of the Free up space action.
 
Nevertheless, to bring back the pics to your phone's gallery, either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.
 
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, the local folder structure can not be restored.
To do so, there is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be effective to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
 
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.
 
That will bring everything to your phone.

Searching for "today" does not work. Searching for May 5 2018 did. Searching for the town(s) in which they were taken works. Or I can Search - Show More - Recently Added, which finds the photos. But if I go back to Photos (in the menu), they're not shown: I can see them only in Search. If I put them in an album, the album is shown (under Albums), and the photos are there. But they are STILL not in Photos.
