The amount of free storage space you have with Google is shared between Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail.

This means that email attachments in Gmail, original quality pictures in Google Photos, and certain file types in Google Drive will all reduce the amount of space you have left.
 
Visit the Google One storage page to see your current storage usage. Visit the Google One Storage Management page to view more comprehensive details about your files along with options for cleaning it up to create more space. 

This info should go a long way to helping you figure out what's responsible for using your storage.

Make sure that they have been "Added to your library" - and you can see them at 
Pay particular attention to videos, which historically may have taken more time to transfer via Partner Sharing.
It is NEVER "Safe" to have irreplaceable images stored in a single tool or device. "Backup" is really a misnomer if there is a single copy.

I am a bit confused about what type of "Backup" you are talking about. If you are referring to the Backup and sync settings in Google Photos, it is possible that your Administrator has disallowed this.  Note: fairly frequently people using EDU accounts lose access to them - typically, I think this is because they graduate, but it would seem like it could sometimes be the result of usage policy changes.
 
Other people are more than welcome to share their opinions.
 
It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).

If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

If you deleted pictures or videos that were not previously backed up to your account through the Google Photos app, then unfortunately there's nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this Help Community can do to recover them.

Hello Toby, those would be photos on the cloud not on your phone.
 
You don't have to manually download them to upload them to Instagram. Just tap Gallery at the top of Instagram's photo selector and then tap on Other, it would load android's file explorer, open the menu and select Photos then tap on Photos at the top, it would load all your cloud Photos.

I tried to share libraries on a few test accounts, and noticed when sharing from account A to account B: when account B already shares with a third account, your invitation is sent and everything looks normal, but the invitation never arrives and you get no notice.

I've read a zillion forums before coming here and tried everything. I've tried clearing the cache, clearing the data and even reinstalling the app. After much reading for the first problem, I tried manually uploading them and now I am stuck at this. Even this doesn't work. All my settings are perfect including the data threshold backup and sync settings and upload while roaming. This is not the first time happening. Last time I had to hard reset my phone which is a real pain.

Also it's just not me, many people have been facing this issue which I've found out after reading online forums even when they were using a certified version. It needs to be fixed from your end. I wonder what I am missing here.. I feel pretty frustrated by what feels wrong from Google.
I took Google photo paying plan to share pictures with my partners. I read this KB that clearly says "Any photos you save from a shared library won't take up storage, unless your partner stops sharing their library with you, or deletes the original copy." Perfect, it fits my need. I have 400GB of pictures with original quality and want to share them with my partner without filling her storage.
Unfortunately, saving photos from a shared library DOES take up storage so my partner suddenly found out that her Google account was totally filled. No ability to send more picture, nor receiving emails. 
I had to stop to share photo with her to get some more space.
I don't understand why the KB clearly says saving photos from a shared won't take up storage when it actually does. 
To clarify this, my partner went to her shared library, then setting, then save, then all, then done. Seems to be I am doing this right and it should not take storage from her account. Obviously I didn't delete photos from my account (if so, it would explain the matter).
Any idea what's going on? Is it a bug on the Google side or the KB is wrong, or am I missing something?

If you have a Google One plan, you can chat with a Google employee. 
And I would contact https://support.google.com/drive/gethelp to ask for temporary space for your partner to get the problem solved. 
Else it will be very hard to get a good answer and certainly not a solution, because it now looks if your partner need to pay for more storage (400GB) too. 
But check https://www.google.com/settings/storage for your partners account: is the overflow on Photos or on Drive or both?

I contacted Google support and they gave me temporary additional storage. To be honest, it's not really a solution. The reason I subscribed to the service at first was to actually use this feature so I feel cheated. Even worse, my partner library now has thousands of pictures that take storage (when it was not supposed to) and as soon as my temporary additional storage will be gone, she won't be able to use her account. I can't clean it because there are so many pictures I have no idea how to sort this out. 
Yes, Google photo is the one with the overflow

We are just a user-to-user forum, so we only can give tips. 
At Recently added (https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ you will see all overflow, but perhaps mixed with some recent shoots - so that makes it a bit more easy to delete in bulk-selections of about 500 max. 
Switch-off the syncing on the partners phone before starting to prevent loss of the local originals. 
That's all I can advice. 

PS: I am not sure it is a bug or a wrong description or changed rules not yet described. 
I always would expect that if shared stuff is saved in library, it always will take storage. But if the setting in https://photos.google.com/settings is on High Quality, that additional storage is not counted by Google. 
Therefore it maybe an integral solution to use the Recover storage button in these settings: then Google will start to convert all to High Quality (can take a day easily with so much GB's) and then the storage count will go down to zero. Be aware that the viewing quality is still very good.

Deleted Photos are stored in Trash for up to 60 days, if you delete Photos again from trash, that's two times deletion.
 
Unfortunately, once Photos are deleted from trash there is no way to retrieve them back :(

Hi everyone. I dropped my phone (Motorola G7) and it landed on the bottom right corner and pretty much shattered it. The screen has those lines and blocked out sections along the bottom and right side and seems to think I am constantly tapping the right side of the screen. It is impossible to navigate the phone, although it does turn on and I can unlock it with the fingerprint on the back. My only concern with the phone is with my photos, and when I checked if they were backed up or whatever on to the computer I saw that only some were, up to a certain date. I was looking around and saw a post/answer that said you can transfer photos from the busted phone to the computer by using a USB cable. However, it said that you would need to be on the phone to give permission for the transfer. Is there a way to transfer the pictures from the phone to the computer via USB without being able to actually use the phone? Thanks for the help.

Can you pull down the notification panel & respond to the messages? 
If yes, you can connect the phone to a PC through the USB port.
Once done, a message will appear providing multiple options. Select "data transfer" and then the contents on the phone will; become visible through the explorer on the Windows PC.

When you have the option to edit the people tags, you can add and correct people tags. If not you can only remove the wrong ones:

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.
 
In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

  1. Make sure you have the most up to date version of Google Photos on your phone
  2. Take a picture (of a business card for example)
  3. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app .

Hi there, I want to make photo albums on google photos using photos on my iPhone camera roll. I have about 20,000 photos in my camera roll that are backed up on iCloud. I would rather avoid backing them up on google photos as it is going to take forever. I have tried using the Google photos app to make an album from the photos it sees in my camera roll - i make the album and save it, and then it disappears. 
Do I need to back all the photos up to google photos first for it to work? 
(Another question...if i delete photos from the Main 'Photos' area of Google photos, will they disappear from my saved albums too?

The steps to take a screenshot vary between phone models & android versions.
 
However, if you have activated OK Google or Hey Google detection on your phone, the easiest way would be to say, "Hey Google take a screenshot". Then the Google assistant will do the work for you. However, once the screenshot is ready, upload that through Google Photos.
 
Nevertheless, the following are the standard methods to take a screenshot.
  • Long press the power button & tap on the menu option "Screenshot".
  • Press the volume down & power button simultaneously.
  • Press the volume down & home button simultaneously.
  • Press the power button & home button simultaneously.
  • Pull down the notification panel & look for the screenshot option.
