Answer:

Hi, SHREY SAHIL BARANWAL

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Can you visit the link https://photos.google.com/settings through any browser on your phone, log into your account & see whether you can find the option there?

Answer:

I have several Google accounts, and they do behave differently:
  • In my main account I see he setting in  https://photos.google.com/settings. grouping similar faces was activated in 2017 while traveling to Thailand (it was not available in Europe at that time)
  • I have another account where Grouping similar faces was activated after in became available in Europe. For reasons I do not know or understand, the setting is only available in the settings of the Google Photos app on mobile devices, and bot in  https://photos.google.com/settings
  • On a third account (a school account) the option to group similar faces is not available at all

I am syncing my data in my computer with backup and sync. Simultaneously i am syncing pics and videos to google photos. I want to sync only photos not videos to google photos. Videos are noise in my collection in google photos. Can we sync only photos ?

Answer:

No, that is not possible. Then you need to move these videos to a separate folder which is not synced to Drive & Photos. Or you let it go and then remove the videos from Photos by selecting the video-category at the bottom of the Search-page. Then they still are backupped at Drive, but take no additional space in your account. But I have to check this, so have some patience.

Tested now: the videofile on Drive will take over the storage-space which comes free on Photos. So the decision is yours: accepting this because of having the videos backupped, or moving them out of the synced folder on pc.

PS: the Backup & Sync app will get changed in august, but such details are unclear to me yet.

Hi, Rajib Manna

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, once a user deletes something permanently despite a warning message or allows the content to time out in the bin, Google doesn't maintain any backup.
There is no way to get back the content through Google Photos.

Nevertheless, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;

Hi, Lady of the Moon

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, Google Photos app doesn't provide any option to lock that using a pin.

Nevertheless, to hide your video, either you can archive that. Then, that wouldn't be visible immediately through the gallery view.
Or, if you have received the update of the "Locked folder", add the video to that.
Here is the help desk article explaining how to use the locked folder.

Is this a bug in Google photos?
When I add a description to a photo in a shared album the description only shows up on my copy of the photos. The other person can't see my Descriptions and the descriptions don't appear in photos that are added to an album! This seems like a bug. Does anyone agree?

Answer:

"When I add a description to a photo in a shared album the description only shows up on my copy of the photos."
  • When you add a description in Google Photos, it is added to the database linked to your account and shown in the info of your photo. The description is NOT added to the metadata of the photo.
  • When you share a photo, you allow others to view your photo, including the description.
  • When others "Save" your photo to their own account, the description is also saved to their account
  • But when someone "downloads" the photo to a computer or mobile device, the description is not downloaded. Only when using "Google takeout" the description is downloaded in a separate .json file, not in the photo itself.

Answer:

I have confirmed that descriptions that I add to shared photos and shared albums are visible by those I have shared the album with. What is not possible is for the person I am sharing photos with to be able to add/edit descriptions to photos or albums. This still seems like a bug.

Answer:

  • When you share a photo with someone, you allow that person to view the photo in your account.
  • Others are not allowed to edit or add descriptions to your photos. Although that might be useful in some cases, I think that it is not a bug but works as intended.
  • The person who you shared with can save the photo to his/her account and thus get his/her own copy where he/she can edit or delete the description.
  • In case of partner sharing, each partner can see the changes made by the other in the "Sharing" tab, but can only edit the saved copy

Answer:

I guess I expected that when setting up "partner sharing" edits of photos and photo Descriptions would all be shared so that my edits and those shared by the partner would all be see by both " partners". No matter, I guess this is just not how the feature was designed.

Answer:

"I expected that when setting up "partner sharing" edits of photos and photo Descriptions would all be shared so that my edits and those shared by the partner would all be see by both partners."
When a photo is "saved" it is saved with the edits and description at the time of saving. Edits done by the owner after the saving will be visible in the "Sharing" tab, but not in the saved copy.

"Partner sharing" is rather limited: it allows the partner to see what is in your "Photos" tab, and (if wanted) save what is shared to his/her account. For example "Albums" must be shared manually. For me and my wife that makes it useless, since we add ALL photos to albums. We have chosen to give my wife access to my Google Photos, mainly for viewing.

If most of your contacts are available at contacts.google.com and most of your photos are available at photos.google.com for your gmail-account (mailadress + password), you will have them available after reset again. But don't expect that they are downloaded to your phone automatically.

After reset you should use the same Gmail-account for setting-up your phone and the Google-app for mailing and photos. If you don't know your password anymore, you are in great problems.
Don't reset then and try to log-in on photos.google.com and place a checkmark at Forgotten password and follow the procedure with precision. Else all is lost forever.

Please advise...

Since google Drive and Photos are now don't inter-operate anymore, I'd like some expert advice on using Google Photos with media from phone and computer.

  1. My family takes photos and video with android phones.
  2. I've got a small file server (Synology NAS) that copies files out to google drive with lots of old media NOT from a phone. I could be copying files from my computer, so please don't say the NAS is a problem.
  3. From time to time, I move the raw media from our family phones to NAS (which end up in Google Drive).

Before Google Photos disconnected from Google drive, media uploaded from phone and media from NAS all appeared in Google Photos (wonderful!). Now if I scan an image or edit a photo in Photoshop, they get sent to Google Drive, but I don't think they appear in Google Photos anymore.

Is the only way to get media to Google Photos to have Google "Backup and Sync" copy media into Google Photos? I haven't tried this yet. That would be a targeted approach to a few directories instead of "all media\

Answer:

For incidental jobs saved in some folder on Drive you simply can use the new option to upload from Drive on https://photos.google.com - they will land in the Recently added searchoption.
The only problem is the dating of these incidentals: they normally will get the date of scanning or whatever.
But on Photos you can edit dates to get the pictures in more logical place in the library and in some album.
Like shown below:

I think that's all probably.

Answer:

Hello, @AAron nAAs
First, there is a point to to be added and corrected for answers that have already been posted by Rinus.
Rinus described only how to copy photos already uploaded to Google Drive to Google Photos. However, you can have another way to upload directly your photos in local drive to Google Photos with Backup & Sync. I will describe it later.

Rinus told,
"the only problem is the dating of these incidentals: they normally will get the date of scanning or whatever".

Basically, Google Photos get the shooting date as timestamp on the cloud from EXIF data being included in the digital photo file. However, it gets the date of scanning or modifying only for photo files without EXIF data.

By the way, when use the new option to "Upload from Google Drive" on https://photos.google.com - they will land in the Recently added search option IF you click "View".
That's because they're taking you to the Recently added search page to make it easier to find the photos you have added. In Recently added search page, all files are lined up ordering to uploading date.
Always, uploaded files will land on photo-library page without doing anything, and are lined up ordering to timestamp specified by Google Photos.

You can see the configuration whole Backup & Sync with Google Drive and Google Photos in my diagram.

You told that,
"Before Google Photos disconnected from Google Drive, media uploaded from phone and media from NAS all appeared in Google Photos (wonderful!). Now if I scan an image or edit a photo in Photoshop, they get sent to Google Drive, but I don't think they appear in Google Photos anymore."

The media uploaded from the phone should have gone through blue arrow on my diagram, it means directly uploading to Google Photos. This function is kept after Google Photos disconnected from Google drive.

Although the media from NAS had appeared in Google Photos before disconnected at July 2019, If they no longer appeared in Google Photos anymore after disconnected, you might have uploaded media from NAS to Google Drive only.
Because the files already saved in Google Photos should not be removed even change on July 2019, however the option to "Sync from Google Drive" affect appearing in Google Photos, if you have used it.

Backup & Sync have 2 sync ways, which are "My Drive (= Google Drive)" and "My Computer (or My Laptop etc.)".
The sync way of My Drive is same as old sync app "Google Drive" then it sync My Drive folder of Google Drive with "Google Drive" folder created on your local computer.
This is the cloud address > https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive

The sync way of My Computer allows you to specify for syncing any folder located anywhere on your computer and also to choose an option to upload photos and videos to Google Photos directly.
Since ver3. 39, it has already allowed users can sync photos and videos to Google Photos and Google Drive from network-attached storage (NAS) devices.
Attention : you can't choose the folder synced to My Drive.
This is the cloud address > https://drive.google.com/drive/computers

Answer:

@Andy
Google Photos refuses to upload identical images, so what about your real cloud at photos.google.com
If you see look-alikes there, they must be different in some details and google can't judge for you what is important to keep. But you can view the dtechnical details more easily by viewing the individual pictures with their infopanel open. Maybe you also will understand then what you did wrong and should be avoided in future. In you delete on site, the corresponding original on phone also will get deleted.

I cleared my camera roll photos on my iPhone because they're all backed up to google photos. When I went to put a few photos back to the camera roll to get prints, I hit save to camera roll. Now the photo is a blank image on both google and my camera roll. If I hold it down I can see the live image but it won't do anything else and I won't be able to print it

Answer:

Apparently it is one of these abnormal Apple-images. But the correct photo still can be present on photos.google.com in  the Safari-browser when you log-in with your Gmail-account and when you choose Download under its 3 dots you may be able to choose the still image.
Goodluck

PS: the app primarily shows the images in the Cameraroll and thereby you see the same blank image twice.
