Does Google Photo editor NOT have ability to flip/mirror a photo?

Question: Does Google Photo editor NOT have ability to flip/mirror a photo?

Simply trying to flip an existing photo (i.e. mirror image). Can't seem to find the option under rot…

Hi, Dave H.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Yes, the editor in Google Photos doesn't offer any utility to flip or mirror a pic.

However, you can do so through the companion app "Snapseed".

Answer:

Thanks for the response. I was afraid that you'd suggest a third-party app, but looks like Snapseed is published by Google, I suppose it's a valid workaround.

It's just ridiculous that Google team doesn't implement flip/mirror function when all that it's required is a simple transformation of the pixels; Even MS Paint has it for over 30 years! Yet, it has the ability to skew photos - they have weird priorities. I'm sure such functionality could be implemented by interns in a summer.

Answer:

That's how the priorities seem to be. Many asked for example for the possibility to sort by file name in an album. That would help us a lot to get the photos in the order we want after renaming in the correct order. But the reply I got is that "the vast majority does not need this". Period. It does not seem to matter that this costs peanuts compared to the so-called AI.

Answer:

Can Snapseed be a replacement of Google Photos? Really hate keeping apps with overlapping functionality. By "replacing" I mean does it have the hooks in place to be called by apps like the Camera? If I remember correctly, the built-in Camera app on Google Pixel used to have it own gallery view before that function is replaced by Google Photos.

Answer:

Hi,  Dave H.

Thanks for your query about Snapseed.

However, Snapseed is a photo editing utility & doesn't have storage & sharing functionalities.
Snapseed can access any photo on the device directly & not necessarily through Google Photos only.

Nevertheless, a naive user is usually content with the editing functionalities in Google Photos.
But, if you scroll the edit menu, then Google Photos offers the launching of any one of the possible editing utilities available on the phone.
That includes apps like Photoshop Express, Snapseed or even Amazon Photos.

My important documents and photos are permanently deleted . It's very important part of my life .... That photos are last Sign... I lived only because of those photos. plz give me those photos back.....plz.

Answer:

Hi Shweta,

If the deleted photos are still in the Google Photos Trash you might be able to restore them as explained in these instructions https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128867?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1

Otherwise it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to pick one that doesn't require rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

Have you turned off the "Auto rotate" function available in the short cuts gallery that becomes available after pulling down the notification panel?

Answer:

Thank you!! Short cuts was set on Portrait Mode. Tapped that, and it went to Auto Rotate!! Not sure how that got changed. Maybe accident pulled down the gallery, then tapped that choice while pushing it back up again.
Oh yes.... Thank you again (;->

We are trying to figure out why i have 115 gb of storage on google photos. Ive never paid to upgrade…

15 GB for free is normal for every Gmail-account, but you may have got 100 GB bonus space due to buying a new Chromebook or another device in the past, but normally that will be for a restricted period, such as 2 years. So it maybe unwise to go beyond your 15 GB limit.

If you log-in with your Gmail-account into the small circle right-up in the Google Photos app, your old photos & videos may appear gradually. If not, they never have been stored at Google safely.
Why not?
We don't know, because you should have checked on photos.google.com before erasing.

My wife and I both use the google photos app on our IPhones.  While we occasionally share individual photos with each other and family members, we have no set sharing function in place yet her individual photos continue to show up in my photos section.   These photos are NOT part of an album nor are they added to any albums or collections that have been shared.   I continue to see google respond by saying it won't share without an intentional action but it is happening on a daily basis.    This is very concerning as it could mean they are shared elsewhere and we don't know it.   Please advise otherwise we may need to stop using it.

Answer:

Nick,

It sounds to me like your wife may have turned on the automatic partner sharing. That's the only reason that every picture she takes would show up for you as well.

You should definitely read the official Google Photos Help page:

Take a closer look at both of your accounts to see if this feature has been activated.

Regards,
~ Greg

Answer:

Greg-  thanks for the reply but that is not the case.  NEITHER me or my wife have it turned on.  When we both go to the sharing section where you would set up sharing, it shows the "get started" icon with the couple holding hands.   There is no sharing set up.  Something else is wrong.   Please advise

Answer:

Is your Google account also on her phone? We've had some users report that when multiple accounts are present on the same device, sometimes Google Photos will back up the camera pictures to both accounts.

Answer:

I'm sure I have used her phone to sign into gmail at times but always sign out.  New has google photos with my account been used.  We are just very concerned photos are being shared with others without us knowing.  My wife wants to close our accounts and is reluctant to take photos.  I really love the service so really need help clarifying why this is happening

Answer:

OK, so my situation was unique, I wonder if it affected anyone else as I did mine.  I have an iPad signed in under my Apple ID that my wife uses with her Google Photos login.  The other day I bought an iPhone (had Android prior).  Pics from my iPhone are backed up to iCloud.  Pics were then synced to her iPad (with my Apple ID), and eventually made there way to Google Photos on that iPad.  Once I disabled Apple Photos in iCloud on that iPad, all new pics do NOT get shared with her Google Photos anymore.

Anyway, in case anyone is was in this unique situation, I thought I'd post how I fixed my issue.

Answer:

You can not remove your account from your phone, but you don't need to use that account in the Google Photos app - then it just is a passive viewer like any gallery. And if you do not use the Drive-app, nothing is stored at Google either.
Nevertheless you live with wrong ideas, because all within your account is private.
But your phone always should be locked for other persons - even your own children.

I live in Utah (MDT) and recently traveled to Maui (HST). I took some photos on my DSLR which had the clock set to MDT time but does not actually have a timezone field in it's settings. So no timezone data is found in the EXIF data of the photos I took.

When I got home I uploaded all of my photos to Google Photos by dragging and dropping my files into the web browser. After the upload finished I noticed that the majority of my photos have their timezone set to HST and time is adjusted -10 hours from the original time. For example I have one photo that the timestamp of the original photo is 2018:04:18 20:26:53 (with no EXIF timezone data). The time shown on this photo in Google Photos is 04/18/2018 10:26 AM HST.

This wouldn't be that big of an issue except that not all files ended up following this format. Some of my files show up in Google Photos with the timezone set to GMT. So it makes it very hard to just do a batch date modification because I am not sure which files are in GMT and which are in HST.

This is very annoying and strange because all the files were taken on the same camera on the same memory card and uploaded using the same laptop on the same network connection.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Is there a way to view a list of files and the timestamp + timezone data in Google Photos?

Are there any fixes in Google Photos that are planned to fix this issue? If I was able to just set the desired timezone in my settings for all uploaded photos that don't have timezone EXIF data that would be perfect.

Answer:

Hi Jeff,

Do any of these photos have a GPS location on them? The way it's SUPPOSED to work is photos maintain the time stamp based on the exif and the timezone is determined by:
-the taken location if there's geodata
-the upload location if no geodata

However I was having issues with this myself this passed week while traveling so there might be a problem right now that I'm trying to gather more info on. What I saw was, Google adjusted the time on my photos as if they were taken in my home time zone but needed to be adjusted for the travel time zone (I live in US east coast but was traveling in the British summer time zone, so it was shifting all my photos 5 hours). I had someone else try the same photos on their account (also in BST, but that person's home time zone) and the time on the photos was a NOT changed. So it's like it somehow knew that home is est but that I was currently in bst and was trying to be helpful and adjust my photos. If course I'd already taken that into account and set the time on my camera correctly so the change made the times wrong... Photos taken on my phone (so with a GPS location) were not affected, those were treated correctly.

This change took several hours to process, at first they were correct. Does this situation sound at all like what you're seeing? If you go back and check the gmt photos now, have they changed at all?

Answer:

I uploaded the photos I mentioned in my previous post more than a week ago, but for some reason some of the photos still retain a GMT timezone.

Honestly I would prefer if Google Photos didn't try to do any kind of automatic timezone detection because my DSLR does not automatically adjust it's clock. It does not have a built in GPS.

So to answer your question, none of the photos have GPS data embedded in them. I uploaded the photos using my laptop in Utah. But for some reason the Hawaiian timezone was used for my photos rather than the Utah timezone.

Answer:

Thanks for the answer, this sounds like a different issue than I've seen but one several others have reported. Though the adjustment of -10 hours is really weird and not sure what's going on with that- that may be similar to what I was seeing. I'm going to try to get more info on this. Also now that I've uploaded all my trip photos, I need to take the time to review them and ensure they're all in the correct timezone.

Answer:

i uploaded photo's from my panasonic dmc-tz70. pict. 181 has time 12:27 and pict.182 6:16 according to google same camera same timezone, should be 13:16

Answer:

It's really frustrating! I can confirm these issues with automatically (and wrong) adjustment of the time stamp. Furthermore the manually adjustment of times has some problems. When I move some pictures by time other pictures (with correct time stamp) are even moved. For me this issue is the biggest issue of Google Photos. Please Google, get active!!

Answer:

I'm in the same boat here, getting really frustrated by this. I usually don't notice that the times are automatically (incorrectly) changed until I actually look at the dates.
But I just uploaded some photos that I took with two different cameras; their times were synced, and sorting by capture date in Lightroom gave the expected result. I exported them, uploaded them to Google Photos via Chrome, and while going through the album I wonder why suddenly there's a picture that doesn't make sense chronologically.
So I check the times, and turns out that Google Photos changed the photos that I took with one camera, but not the ones that I took with the other, even though I can't see any difference in regards to the capture time in the EXIF data.

And it's the same behaviour as described above. I'm in GMT+2; I also set the camera to the respective time, although it doesn't save the timezone in the EXIF data. And I upload the photos while I'm in GMT+2.
Google Photos assumes the timestamp is GMT, and since I'm in GMT+2 it adds two hours to the time.

Now, to get around this we could just leave the cameras on GMT time. But that would require us to upload photos from the time zone we took the photos in. Who goes on holiday, takes photos, and uploads ALL of their photos to Google Photos while they're still on holiday?!

I REALLY hope this will get fixed at some point and the automatic time change will at least be a feature that we can either turn off, or we will get asked about before it's being applied.

Answer:

Yeah, I wish that Google Photos would just leave the timestamps as they are before they were uploaded. If no timezone exists in the EXIF, then upload as a photo without a timezone, but keep the original time. If there is a timezone set in the EXIF, then upload the photo with that timezone. No fancy magic. Just simple logic.

Answer:

Taking pics using a Google Pixel.  Up to a couple days ago pics were backing up correctly to Google Photos, but as of 2 days ago the time stamp is being automatically changed (usually by a matter of hours).  So I end up with photos out of time order on both Pixel and Google Photos...  Great when documenting travels.  Using a Google phone and backing up in standard way.  I guess I'll now have to spend a full day changing individual time stamps so my goddaughter can remember our trip together.  Not impressed, Google Photos team.......

Answer:

Do you have GPS locations being added to your photos? If so this definitely should not be happening. I wouldn't expect it to happen when uploading through the app even w/o a location on photos, though have never tested this myself (all my phone photos have a location) so can't say for sure without testing it further. If you do have location enabled, I'd suggest clearing the app data and cache to see if this helps.

I recently got a new phone and when i signed in to google photos with the same account that i have been using, the only photos that were there were the ones already on my phone.

Answer:

Hopefully you still have your old phone not cleaned up.
Due to wrong settings or other causes your old pictures never have been stored at Google.
To be sure of that, just view photos.google.com in the Chrome-app and be sure that you are logged-in with your old Gmail-account. If almost nothing is there, come back here to report.
Then we can discuss what you can do.

PS: do you have a modern computer?

I used a program called mobimover to move photos off an old iphone with charging issues a few years ago. These photos are visible in their own separate folder in iphoto (not in the normal feed). I am now trying to get them into google photo and it doesnt seem to recognise them. Any ideas how to fix this?

Answer:

If they are not visible in the normal view, the Google-app can not find them. Try to move some to the normal view to see what happens. Nevertheless they will go deep down in the timeline on the Photos-page, but on the Search-page there is an option to view the recently added.
Good luck

Answer:

Then it becomes difficult.
Maybe it is possible via your private Google Photos site at photos.google.com in Safari. You need to log-in then with the same Gmail-account as used in the Google Photos-app for backupping.
Then you can use the Upload-arrow and try to find the folder where the old copies are stored.
Then they can be selected and copied to Google maybe in groups of about 100.
Good luck

Question: Deleted my video from trash accidentally. I want it back.

I deleted my videos accidentally yesterday. I want it back.

Hi Mradul,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover videos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted video recovery app (be sure to pick one that doesn't require rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20videos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

Get the original location of where this picture was taken

Not clear if you are talking about a picture shooted with your own camera or a picture shared with you or some picture downloaded from some website.
But if you move-up the picture and there is no location data below the date (maybe not correct either), you only may hope that the Google Lens icon will give you the approximate answer.
No Google here - just volonteers.

Answer:

Then the camera has had no gps in that location.
Or that function was switched-off in your camera-settings.
We can do no more.
But you should remember the spot.

Google lens is not working. How can I get the service?

It is not a matter of getting the service: if you are logged-in with valid Gmail-account into the Google Photos app under the small circle right-up and you open a photo, you will see the Lens-icon at the bottom.
But not every photo can be recognised by Google Lens or it are unimportant details.

PS: I do not know if the service is country dependant due to whatever restrictions on security.

Question: I'm trying to put some images on my site. At this point I get nothing but a continuous swirling circle - no connection to the webpage. I have been able to easily and quickly accomplish this task many times over. What could be going on?

I've checked to see if the memory is full on my site. It is not. I've cleaned cache and cookies.

Question: Why do photos in albums disappear when I delete the same photos from the photos on the device files?

I tried to archive the photos hoping I have a backup.

Did you use "Delete from device" in the Photos app to delete them, or did you delete them through some other app?

Answer:

Claire,

If you delete pictures from within the Google Photos app, those pictures will be removed from your Photos library entirely (which means they will also be removed from any albums), as well as many other locations connected to your Google account. Those pictures will also be deleted from all devices synced to your account.

When you tap the trash can icon in the Photos app, a confirmation box appears that warns you of this.

If you have recently deleted these pictures, you can find them in the trash bin within the Google Photos app. Open the sidebar menu on the left of the screen and choose the trash bin. There you can view and restore any pictures or videos you have deleted within the past 60 days.

It would also be a good idea to review the official Google Photos Help page that discusses this:

Question: Hi Google, why my old pictures are ruined? I can see half of photo and rest is just blank.

95% of all photos between 2011 and 2014 are ruined. Please restore those. They are mostly my family …

Sorry, but there is no Google here and you can't phone them and this is a user-to-user forum.

But I can't not even guess what you may have done wrong, so I only can give some tips.
  1. Clean-up your standard browser.

  2. Or open https://photos.google.com in another browser.

  3. Check your internet connection - maybe it is by far too slow to get your pages build-up.
Good luck

Answer:

I think google storage went down and they lost most of my photos. Is is possible to open a ticket somehow?
Below is what I ment by loosing part of picture.

Answer:

Maybe, but a bit unlikely because then you would got a warning on Gmail - unless you never use Gmail.

Please check details on https://www.google.com/settings/storage

If the total usage is over 15 GB and especially high on Photos, use the Recover storage button on https://photos.google.com/settings
The compression happens at Google and may take hours until the button is greyed out.
Close the site and look again tomorrow.
Good luck

Question: Hi sir good morning

Hi, kiran kumar 4489

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, once a user deletes something permanently despite a warning message or allows the content to time out in the bin, Google doesn't maintain any backup.
There is no way to get back the content through Google Photos.

Nevertheless, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.
