Did you ever see the photos in another location, such as on the photos.google.com website or the app on another device?

Just because you can see photos by opening the Google Photos app, that doesn't necessarily mean they've been backed up. Google Photos also acts as a viewer for photos that are stored on your phone.

Your profile at the top of the Photos section of the app will tell you the status of your backup. Unfortunately it does not indicate the status of individual photos.

This indicates backup is pending (recent photos not yet backed up). The arrow will be gray if it's waiting for wifi

Dotted line around around profile indicates upload in progress, the line turns solid to indicate progress, then disappears once the upload is completed

This indicates backup is disabled for this device or account

Could these photos also be backed up anywhere else- service provider backup (I know Verizon offers this), Dropbox, OneDrive, etc? I suggest looking in every possible place just in case.

Good morning. You need to remove your uncle's phone as a "trusted device" from your Google account.

Go to Google My Account and click "Sign-in & Security" then scroll down until you see "Device Activity & Security Events." In that section you'll see Recently Used Devices. Click the link to "Review Devices" and find your uncle's phone. From there you can remove that phone's access to your account.

I have no idea how these additional duplicates got there. They must have been added to your account. You can go to "Recently added" (under "Search" on Android and under "Explore" in the web app (to make it more complicated), or on https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.
In the web app the info field may give some info about the source of these photos.
"Is there a way to bulk "remove from album"?"
Select multiple photos in the album, tap 3-dots > remove from album.
But why do you not want to delete them since they are duplicates anyway ?

But you can start the editor and then press the first button, which already may brighten up enough.

You only can be sure that your backup is okay when you view photos.google.com in the Chromebrowser, because as long as they are on phone, you are playing the local file.

And if that file is processed, it may look corrupted or it is some unsupported format.

Videos simply are ugly stuff with an endless range of formats etc.

Can you view the photos and play the videos correctly on the https://photos.google.com website?

This is a nasty but usual problem never explained to us.

But if they were store at high quality, they never were counted by Google - so deleting makes no difference.

You also should be aware that it is very abnormal what you did: the pictures stored at Google are supposed to be your last resort if your phone falls in the Niagara.

However: you may have a Google Photos folder on Drive from the past, which has taken over storage now, so check that and if not synced with your computer, you should delete this folder and empty the trash at Drive also. And you also may have many years on Gmail.

Just to prevent the endless amounts of permanent deletion of bulks and then come complain here.

And then can be done nothing anymore.

Besides you easily can run into problems with further actions simply because of a too large amount.

But you are free to send your feature request straight to Google via the feedback option under your profile circle - ask that it will be done before Christmas :-)

Yes Jan, but that is not in an album or in a search category and it is very stupid of Google that they did not limit that amount to 100 (or one month) because that is main cause of many permanent deletions by "mistake" - locally as well as on cloud.

Otherwise it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Trash. Then Google does not find pics like screenshots or other non-regular stuff that can be archived in order to hide them from your normal stream.

Hi Joy,

although Google Photos should be able to store 4K videos it can't currently play them at 4K, only at 1080p. You can check whether this is the case by looking at the video file size in the details in Google Photos or downloading such a video from Google Photos to a computer and checking whether it's still 4K.

I have checked the file size in google photos and its 1080p...I downloaded the video and checked the file size and it was 1080p. However when I check the filesize in my Iphone, it shows 4K

I checked and I confirm Google Photos can both store and play videos at 4K. I uploaded a test video and its frame and file size are correctly recognized as 8.3MP 3840 × 2160, i.e. 4K, as in this screenshot of the video's info pane:

Can you please double check you've set the upload quality to Original in Google Photos on all the devices from which you're uploading the videos? It's also useful to check the details in the video's info pane by opening the video and clicking the (i) icon.

I initially thought that it was due to the time of Google to process the video, but this is not the case as even after a week the resolution of my uploaded 4k videos remain 360p.

I've set the upload to "Original quality" as of day 1, but still nothing changes.

As you can indeed see from the image below, this video was uploaded almost a week ago, and the maximum streaming quality I get is 360p, while the "info" tab clearly mentions 3840x2160.

Any idea on how to solve the issue ?

I believe the issue could be that your 4k video was encoded with HEVC (.h265) format. If you had recorded in the more common .h264 format that Google Photos would show all the resolution options up to 2160p. At least this was my experience a few months ago. I hope they support the .h265 format for 4k soon as it uses less than half the data as .h264. Hopefully their player can soon stream 4k .h265 video soon too as it's a pain to have to download it to play it. I thought Google would be more cutting edge. .h265 has been out for multiple years.

Nobody likes to have a million photos to sort through just to find that one pic you want. I always take several photos to make sure I get at least one good one (nobody's blinking etc.), then delete any that are sub par so that I don't have a bunch of junk photos. My problem is that my phone is nice and orginized with only the photos I want, but Google Photos - dispite being synced to that device - keeps EVERY photo even if I delete them on my phone. So now I'm using tons of data that I don't need, and the only way i can find is to manually go over years of photos and delete them. That's not going to happen. There's got to be a way to have Google Photos just move them to trash automaticaly, right?

Because you did not use Google Photos as your organiser and that was not very wise, because then you also could have build albums in cloud that can be shared and will survive your phone.

I am trying to delete all files from my google photos account, and I have already gone through the scrolling and selecting for all visible pictures including the archive, and cleared the trash. However, when I go to google photos, there are blank boxes such as when the pictures are loading, but they stay for a couple minutes until they disappear and google photos appears to have nothing uploaded with a prompt to upload pictures. When I go to my google account, under the "See and manage the data in your Google Account" it says I have 58 pictures on my account. I can go to get.google.com/albumarchive and under Auto Backup, I have many automatically created folders that I can "manage in google photos" and delete, but any folder that says it contains items has no items when i enter it in the album archive, or when I manage it in google photos, and when I click delete album in google photos, it says that it couldn't delete the album. When I use google takeout to download all my google photos data, I am able to download these files, mostly corrupted .mp4 files that can still be recovered with software as well as a few working videos and pictures. There has to be a way for me to delete these, and there should be an easy way in my google account to just clear all data from google photos.

Critical components of my account were inaccessible/inoperable once that happened - I could not send or receive emails nor edit documents.

In order to resolve this, I did a google takeout on all of my google photos data which has since expired (on July 8). I also deleted these photos and emptied the trash to make room for email and documents to operate.
