Google chooses pictures of smiling people as albumb over instead of the latest added picture

Question: Google chooses pictures of smiling people as albumb over instead of the latest added picture

Why do my album covers change automatically to pictures of smiling people? I have never choosen this picture to be an album cover. This happenes to all albums now. I moved the pictures of an albumb to a new one named test and sorted it to see the latest pics first. At first it looked good and it used the latest addec picture as albumb cover. I thought only the old album was bugged. A few hours later I checked it again and it has automatically choosen the same picture of smiling people as album cover.

Why is it doing that? I do not want this behavior! How do I stop this?

Answer:

I made new albumbs but it selected a random image as album cover. Why is it doing that? I want the album cover to be the latest image and not a random image I never slected. Why does Google select a album cover for my albums?

Answer:

Hello Push,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please let me know which picture are you referring to when you say "Specific picture"? Is this picture available on these 2 or 3 albums you've mentioned? Also, let me know if this picture available on your Photos library or it isn't available on your Google Photos?

Meanwhile, please try and check on any other device or the web version of Google Photos to see the if the issue is same?

Keep me posted.

Best,
Sonya

Answer:

Some albumbs always uses the same image as cover. I don't know why. It should use the latest added picture as album cover. I use the webversion. The album cover on the smartphone is the same.

On one albumb it uses the fifth (#5) picture as album cover
On one albumb it uses the twenty-first (#21) picture as album cover

When I move all images to a new albumb it uses the latest image added to the album as cover.. like it should always do. A few hours later the album covers switched to the fifth (#5) and twenty-first (#21) picture back.

I did never choose any album covers. I don't know why it likes thoose pictures as album cover. Mabye because there are smiling people?!?

The pictures are on another google account.

Answer:

I made a new album and the album cover was again automatically changed to a picture with smiling people instead of the last added picture. I can now confirm the album covers are automatically choosen to a picture with smiling people.

I don't want this. I want to use the latest added picture as albumb cover. How can I stop Google from choosing the albumb covers based on smiling people?

Answer:

@Push
I do not recognise that behaviour. Google chooses an album cover (no idea how), but I often change it to one I prefer:
  • either open the album, click 3-dots > Set album cover
  • or open the photo you want as cover > 3-dots > Use as album cover
I do not remember that Google replaced that cover later.

Answer:

Then try it. Move your old pictures to a new album and way a few hours and see what magically happens. When I do this it selects the picture with a smiling person. If I don't add this image or remove it it chooses another one with a smiling person. Either they started a beta test on my account with new features or it works for all users.

Answer:

@Push
  • I gave it a try, added photos to a new album, but it simply took the first pic (a landscape). There are smiling persons in other photos. I will keep an eye on it to see whether it changes later.

  • What happens when you select a photo as album cover ? Is that also replaced ?

Answer:

It always takes the picture with the biggest smiling face. I want it to take the latest added photo instead of the biggest smiling face.

When I set a photo as album cover it doesn't get replaced. However I I do that it also won't show the latest added photo anymore.

Answer:

"It always takes the picture with the biggest smiling face."
In my test album it (rather rapidly) replaced the photo, but by another landscape.

"When I set a photo as album cover it doesn't get replaced. It won't show the latest added photo anymore."
OK, that's nice. At least it keeps the one you selected. That's probably as intended.

GP made several smart albums for me that contain photos of specific things, like individual people, places, cars, animals, etc.  For example, it made a "dogs" smart album for me.

I reviewed the "dogs" album and for the most part, GP included mostly my photos that contained dogs.  I then edited some of those photos, just to improve their color.  I selected the "auto" setting and saved the photos.  Most, but not all, of the photos I edited in this way were removed from the "dogs" smart album after I saved them.

Why did it remove the photos from the album?

Will they return to the album at some time?

Answer:

Hello Lance,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please let me know what exactly are you referring to when you say smart albums? Are you referring to the animations created with the photos on the assistant?

If yes, it would be great if you can share a screenshot or a shot videos of the steps you've followed to edit the photos and from where exactly are you editing the photos. Please ensure to hide/blur any personal photos/information on the screen shot that you share.

My some photos are deleted permanently so please help me to recover my photos I had some important photo which I need please help me to get my photos back

Answer:

Hello Yogesh Pareek 2338,

Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried.

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos

3. Review other options
  • if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
  • have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
  • there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
  • you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
  • If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.
 Thanks.

I trying to restore some of the screenshots I deleted today. I have tried to look for them in the bin option in the google photos apps but it didn't included the deleted screenshots. I downloaded some applications of photo restoration but it didn't work either. I use a samsung android, please help me restore my screenshots they are very important to me.

Answer:

Hi, Dipank Chahal

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Since you are not finding the deleted pics in the bin, that means those are now permanently deleted.
However, once a user deletes something permanently despite a warning message or allows the content to time out in the bin, Google doesn't maintain any backup.
There is no way to get back the content through Google Photos.

Nevertheless, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Question: How to Move photos to pc...to free up phone space

Tried to use photo app on pc to import from phone via USB...pc can't find photos to import

Hi, J Copley

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

The easiest way to transfer the photos from the phone to a PC is by connecting through the USB port.
Once done, select the option of "Data transfer" out of the ones offered by the pop-up message that flashes the moment you connect your phone to the PC.

Nevertheless, if you have freed up space on your phone, you can do so through Google Photos using the following options.

You can download photos by accessing the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your PC. Select multiple pics through the combination of shift key + mouse & tap the three dots to see the download option.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments on your hard disk.

Hi User 7292814545844797383,

Are you using Google Photos on an Android or iOS device?

If Android, it is possible that your phone does not use a Screenshot folder on device to save the picture. Can you please let me know what specific device you are using?

Answer:

Hi,

I am using Android / Samsung Galaxy S21.

When I go into my actual phone's folders, I see that there are separate folders for my Pictures and for my Screenshots. But Google Photos seems to just combine them all for some reason.

Answer:

My Samsung creates a screenshot folder under DCIM, but Google Photos shows them in the Camera folder. No idea why. And no solution I know of.

Answer:

That is a Samsung mistake (since years) and of course it also is a Google mistake that they have put a lot in a folder named Camera, while the real name DCIM is (since years also).
Nobody learns over there from us.

Answer:

In the simple Google Gallery Go app the contents of the DCIM-folder is shown as separate folders as far they contain photos - so Camera, Photoscan, Restored, Screenshots like shown below on the forum-site:

This is what also should be done in the Google Photos app under "Pictures on device" on the Library-page (should be named "Folders on device" to avoid that people name "Albums" ).
That's all.
It would be stupid that we all need to ask this via feedback under or profile after so many years of complaints. It is the task of a community manager to signalise such design mistakes to the team - we can't do this because it is no sudden bug.

Nevertheless: it also is not okay that Samsung (and other companies) has placed the Screenshot folder in DCIM - that folder should have been separate or in the main Pictures-folders. That should have been forbidden by Google. That also would have prevented an endless amount of complaints since years.

Only Android 11 asks me persistently to check (and approve)
"unsychronized changes"
after the deletions of photos on the server.
(one line pop-up with yellow exclamation mark and an X in the lower part of the secreen).
If I click it away (no I don't want to spend time on this) a new line with this message shows up in the apps menu.

I assume Android 11 introduced restrictions to alter files on our phones without explicit consent.
Google Photos on Android 6,9,10 doesn't do this.

Is there a way to switch this annoying interruptions off?

Answer:

Hi
Not that I am aware off, but these A-11 messages are extremely irritating indeed and extremely slow when you try to follow the steps advised.
And they are not present in the comparable app on iPhone & iPad: there you only see a red dot at the bottom and then you can delete the local images via Tools on the Library-pages very fast.
That is a much more clean approach.

So I only can advise to use the feedback option under your profile to complain about such nuisance.
They will "say" Thank you and if we are lucky they are away at Christmas :-)

Answer:

Thanks
What means  "A-11 messages"?

I also have to complain about another type of nerving messages.

I capture a lot of screenshots into GP, which usually contain text.
Every time I open such a photo, I get small messages in the middle of the top or buttom region:
(from German)
"Search in Screeshot
"Copy Text from Photo
"Move into Archive

If I'm "lucky\

Answer:

Google always thinks that we need a lot of recommendations and you need to search yourself in the notification-settings (many) if they can be reduced - but I don't think so.
But because it is quite abnormal to have a lot of screenshots, you can't avoid them - usually I don't backup screenshots for long because I often need them in technical docs I am working on. .

But they are quite different from the Android-11 messages about changes and deletions because they have to do with image-content like advises about improving brightness.

Again: complain via the feedback option in the app under your profile.

Answer:

Thanks.
The Android 11 notification section of Google Photos is indeed immense (10 types in 3 categories)
I guess they want our attention ....

However the pop-ups of this thread have nothing to do with Androis notifications in my opinion.
The screenshot photo related ones also pop up in the web browser.
So if there is a way to avoid them it must be a general Google Photo setting, not an app notification setting in my opinion.

Answer:

Your theme was about "unsynced changes" and not about "in picture recommendations" due to Google-AI.

I have learned from years that Google hardly can't be corrected, so I simply don't play any attention to them or click them away. And as said: I have not many screenshots disturbing my normal flow - if I need to keep them backupped longer then a few days, I do archive them indeed etc.
That's all.
