PS: be aware that every ugly app that stores in the DCIM-folder (named "Camera" under Pictures on device on the Library-page) will be shown on the Photos-page also and backupped. You can't prevent that unless by not using these ugly apps :-)

Sorry Seth: everything that shows up in the Camerafolder under Pictures on device on Library page also is shown in the stream on the Photos-pages and backupped if switched on. 

You can't prevent that, but you can hide certain pictures by archiving them. 

You should complain via the feedback option under your profile that the camerafolder really is the camerafolder and not a heap of several folders, like for screenshots.

To avoid such problems in the future: 

First you need to understand the principle of synchronization: if there is a connection between the Photos and the folder on the device, then deleting it in the folder in the Gallery will delete it everywhere. 

Therefore, for Photos there is an option: 

1) "Free up space on your device

2) Transfer the photo or video to another folder that does not have synchronization with Photos, and delete your unnecessary files already in this other folder.  In this case, there will be no deletion in the Photos.

Don't worry about it: you can always make sure that your photos are already in the Photos service forever, just by looking through the browser.  If you see your photos, then they are there and they are free.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery, either, you can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

 

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, the local folder structure can not be restored.

To do so, there is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone.

However, the method may not be effective to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

 

That will bring everything to your phone.
