I would like to display a specific Google Photos folder (and only that folder) on Nest Hub. In the Google Home app, I select Kitchen Display (my Nest Hub) / settings / Photo Frame / Google Photos / your photos (my account). I then select the desired folder (deselecting all others).

The desired photos are displayed - but also photos which are not in that folder. Is it possible to display only the photos from the folder I selected?

Thanks advance for any help you can provide.

When viewing a photo in google photos, after around one second of viewing the photo as it should be seen, what I can only describe as a white mist or possibly overexposure appears. This is not the actual photo, as it only happens in the google photos app, and disappears when entering editing or sharing. In addition, this only happens with new photos, not old photos.

Yes, they do look fine on the computer. Digging around more on the internet, this seems to be a problem that various devices are having after the latest update. Uninstalling updates fixed this issue for me. Hopefully, this can be fixed in a future update.

Hi all,

I've got a shared album with 206 items (total is seen from album list). When I select it and I try to select all photos (first photo, shift, last photo), I've got only 203 items.

Regarding dates within the album :

  • The oldest photo is from 2021-08-01 084402
  • The newest photo is from 2021-08-14 193122
  • The date range on album is Aug 28, 2016 (wrong) – Aug 14, 2021 (correct).

When I search in my library for photos from Aug 28, 2016, I do not find anything.

I cannot explain the discrepancy. Any hints ?

Thx,
David

Dear Associate of Google Support,
I just had to replace my phone and I am devastated to learn that all my photos that I had taken for three months are backed up as partial back up even though they are set as original quality back up. I can not seem to understand this as I am nearly always connected to good quality Wifi. This issue has really made me frustrated and angry. Is there any way to compensate this? I make money out of those photographs and now I feel like I am rubbed of my income. I even consider leaving android once and for all.

My phone underwent.a factory reset when I got locked out of my phone. My phone was set up for backup and sync and I had checked photos on a regular basis to ensure my pics were backed up. When my phone got reset, i downloaded the photos app.and it only shows the photos up.to mid 5.2019. How can I get  the rest of the photos/videos? Those photos are irreplaceable, esp as they had the photos leading up to my child's cancer dx and the start of this treatment. Please help!

Answer:

Even without any nasty reason it always is wise to check your backup straight on https://photos.google.com in the browser of your laptop and download what is new weekly to computer - just to have an additional security against the usual smartphone disasters.
So I only can advise to do that now and when you log-in with the same Gmail-account always used, hopefully you may see the newer ones. I not, they were not uploaded to Google because of technical troubles in the phone. Hëlas.
Nevertheless I hope for the best with your child.

Answer:

Thanks for the response. I occasionally check the photos via web browser and the photos were there (last time I checked was probably within the past month). I don't understand why they would show up in the app and not after this reset. Last night I even did google backup and it said it wouldn't do the photos bc they would be backed up via the app.

So is there no way to get those photos back? I'm going to switch phones again soon so I don't want to lose the pics/videos I'm taking more.

Btw my son is hanging in there. If you're interested, check out his IG @elliottbattlesbll.

Thanks again.

Answer:

And if you check https://photos.google.com now - are the missing ones still there or suddenly away also?

In general: before factory reset (why again - that should never be done unles childs are playing around with them and that should not be done with a personal phone at all - they should not even be able to get in): log-out in syncing-apps after being sure that all photos (and especially videos because they can take very long) are being backup (checked again via https://photos.google.com), because you will loose all locally stored data.
Really can't say more about hélas.
Sorry

Answer:

Thanks again. I checked on my comp and the newer stuff if there. I have no idea why something changed in may 2019 and it stopped uploading.

The factory reset was due to an extra.security setting bc I have access.to.work.email. I forgot the password and with no way to.reset my pswd, it wiped everything. It even wiped my sd card.:(.thanks again.

Answer:

That makes it even more complex for Google Photos, because you may have synced photos to that work-account accidentily and it is not clear to me if that account is changed into a new account - because then these photos are lost also.
Sorry, it hardly is possible to help in such chaotic situations.

Hello, I ask the google photos team to help me recover some photos that were deleted from the google photos trash from the 14/08/2021 onwards, they are remarkable photos for me and I really need to recover them, thank you in advance !

Answer:

Leandro Oliveira 2057,

When you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

The information on the following Google Photos Help pages will help you become more familiar with finding, deleting, and restoring your pictures:

If you deleted pictures or videos that were not previously backed up to your account through the Google Photos app, then unfortunately there's nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this Help Community can do to recover them.

Files that existed only on your phone, ones that were never uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered or restored by a cloud storage service. Simply put, Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place

I use backup&sync on Windows to sync a local picture folder (with lots of subfolders) to google photos. I still have plenty of space on my google account, so I'll worry about running out of google space later.  However, to free up space on my hard drive I want to delete some of the locally saved pictures (backup on 2 different external discs). [I've been using google photos for several years before it started to be counted against the 15 GB quota, therefore I have > 100 GB of photos on my hard drive that take up "0" space on google photos].

What will happen to google photos in this case? I still want to have those images present in google photos and searchable. In google drive (web), I see a "folder structure" representing the local picture folder synched via backup&sync. Obviously, this mapping will be lost, but this would be ok for me, as long as the pictures are still contained in google photos.

Answer:

Hello Sebastian ,

Welcome to the Google Photos Community.

Deleting the "folder structure" representing the local picture folder synched via backup&sync will not affect the photos in Google Photos they will still be contained in google photos with no change in storage.

Peter

Question: Using Backup and Sync to backup all files including Raw and DNG, but only showing .JPEG in GPhotos

I have used Drive for a long time but fairly recently had a motherboard failure and had to setup a new PC. I used to use Google Drive to store anything I wanted accessible from anywhere and also as a backup of important files and all my photos. My prior setup was obviously anything in the Google Drive folder was also stored to Google Drive, then used the Google Photos backup tool to only sync the Pictures folder I had setup in Google Drive folder....it was configured to ignore RAW and DNG files and upload at high quality instead of original.

Well, when I downloaded Backup and Sync, I got the impression they were doing away with the "Drive" part and I opted to not have Google Drive folder on this new PC, but instead moved those files to outside of that folder..for example...all my pictures are now in the native "Pictures" folder on my W10 PC. I then used "Backup and Sync" to back those up. I did the same for documents and other folders as well and essentially the "Google Drive" is empty with just a lot of backed up folders showing beneath it under "My Computer" on the web. The problem is, if I use the setting "Upload newly added photos and videos to Google Photos" it is adding RAW and DNG which I don't want. I can't change that in the "Change" section though, because then they aren't backed up at all and I only have a local copy on my PC.

Ultimately what I want is to have all my files backed up on Google Drive in their original format and size and only have JPEG's come over to Google Photos. I think I have to go back to my original setup to accomplish this correct? I will have to put everything back in to the Google Drive folder with the "Sync My Drive to this computer" checked. Then in the backup and sync section for this PC would have it only look at the "Pictures" folder from within Google Drive and tell it to ignore RAW's and DNG photo's with the option of "High Quality" to avoid double dipping in my storage quota. Does that sound correct?

Answer:

Hi Aaron,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to upload RAW and DNG files specifically to Google Drive and JPEG's to Google Photos.

That being said, if you would like to see this feature implemented in the future, I recommend leaving feedbackabout it through the following steps:
  • Open Google Photos.
  • Click on Menu.
  • Select Send feedback.
  • Click on Send.
The product team reviews the feedback regularly and uses it to better improve the product overtime.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,
Emma

I am having returning problems when creating photo albums. I make them, adding a number of photos, then next thing I know they are gone from the album. Or at least a lot of them are. I could be putting in 200 photos then the next day there are only 22 remaining. So I do the same again, only to find most of the photos disappear again after a short while. It has happened over time with different photos and different albums. Why does this happen? And how to fix it? Happens both on my iPhone and computer.

Answer:

Never happened before at me in many years, so you are doing something wrong basically.
Perhaps you think that can you delete the photos in the mainstream then to avoid double space at Google. But albums don't take space and contain no copyfiles - just references to the mainstream.
So the mainstream must stay apart from the ugly ones.
Else your experiences are very abnormal.

PS: also check your space at Google via one.google.com/storage - just for security.

So My wife and I have been using google photos for a couple years now to keep all my photos and periodically clear out of our phones. We share one Apple ID, but have always used google photos with our individual google addresses. It's never been an issue before as our individual camera rolls would back up to those individual accounts. Recently we noticed that the app now shows photos from each other's phones. Pulling them from the shared photo stream associated with the Apple account. Those photos are not automatically backed up like the ones on the local device. The thumbnail shows the circle arrows icon and gives the option of manual backup. But why are they there in the first place? They never used to appear there before. Why are they being included now when they haven't been in the past? You'll see in the photo attached the one on the bottom was taken by my wife which is why it has the circle arrows. The rest were taken by me  and were backed up.

Question: photos in london

Photos deleted more then 60 days (two months) ago, are not in trash under the 3 small lines anymore.
Hélas - you can't have all forever.
But type the word "london" in the searchbox and see what comes-up.

Answer:

If you want to get a deleted item back, check your trash to see if you can get it back. If your photo or video has already been backed up and you deleted it, it will remain in your Trash for 60 days.
  1. On your computer, go to the trash.
  2. Place your cursor over the photo or video you want to restore, then click Done Done.
  3. At the top right, click Restore Restore. That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Don't see the photo or video? If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
  • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
  • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.

I have fetched photos indexed with a specific person e.g. Jack, and another with Jill. I want a search that combines inclusion of Jack and Jill and is restricted only to the photos that have just them. I want to create a couples album without clutter from other people such as typically  in photos of wedding ceremonies.

Answer:

Assuming that you have already identified both Jack and Jill in the People & Pets section, you can perform a search combining the two like this:

"Jack" AND "Jill"
"Tony Stark" AND "Bruce Banner"

This kind of search will show you all pictures and videos where both of those people have been identified. It will not, however, show you results where only those two people are present. That's not possible at this time, so your results will include group photos with other people as well.

You should use the Send Feedback feature to let developers know that this capability is something you feel should be added.

Answer:

It would be nice to have a feature that specifies RESTRICT {Jack, Jill,...} assuming that these are tagged in the photos. Photos that have more or less people than the specified selection set are not retrieved.. This will help isolate couple photos or nuclear family photos when searching over tens of 1000s of photos that i have collected over the years, digitized, etc.

My Google Photos won't free up space anymore which in turn, leaves me with no storage on my phone.  I keep clicking free up space and it will not work. I even purchased additional GB.

Answer:

Your space-needs in cloud are not directly related to the space-needs on your phone and the free-up space function on can delete your local files to get space for new shoots.
So having more space in cloud has no influence on the function - there simply are hardware reasons that the function does not operate on certain phone and sofar no solution is found.
Because you give no technical data, it is no clear if you really need to free-up.
But if you install the Google Files app, you can see how much free-space you have and you also can start deleting old files - say everything from before 2021.
But then you also must be sure about your cloud by viewing photos.google.com in the Chrome-app
Please come back with numbers, also about your cloud at one.google.com/storage

PS: deleting in Google Files will create space on your phone without deleting any pictures in Google cloud, so they still will be shown in the Google Photos app and can be used for sharing etc.

I have already turned off Backup and Sync from the google photo app on my phone and deleted the app. I read that if Backup and Sync is off that I can delete them from Google Photos now but just wanted to double check that this is before I delete everything. Thanks!

Hello
There is no location on the saved photos from a shared album.
Do you know why or how to save a photo from a shared album with the location?

Answer:

If the original picture contained GPS or other location data, those details will remain intact when the image is added to a shared album unless the person who added the picture chose to hide the location upon sharing.

It's possible that the option to hide the location is enabled without the other person realizing it.

To check this, go into the Google Photos settings and under the Sharing section you'll see a toggle for "Hide Photo Location Data." If it's turned on, just turn it off.

If that isn't the problem, it's possible there just isn't any location information in the picture's EXIF metadata. From the same place in the Photos app settings you'll see a selection for Google Location Settings. Tap that to go to the broader location options for the phone as a whole, not just for the Photos app.

Question: I deleted videos and photos from Google photos and also deleted from trash. Now I want to recover it

I want to recover permanently deleted files from Google photos

Divakar ganesh,

@Greg

I am sorry, but your canned response is not correct anymore for the app in Android-11.

People are not warned anymore that they are going to delete their local photos in gallery permanently and their copies at Google too, so they really end-up with almost nothing.

Of course they never tell us why they have started such a bulk deletion, but they simply think that they view their pictures at Google and they don't want them there - perhaps because they don't want to pay or by thinking that they are searchable via Google on its public web.

Design mistakes:
  1. Not clear that they are viewing the content on their phone only.
  2. Not immediately clear if their backup at Google is complete (or not backupped at all).
  3. Being able to select unlimited items with a simple swipe down.
  4. Confusing warnings about trashing which are skipped.
  5. They also think that the thrash at Google should be cleaned, but they are not warned that this action will deleted all selected items on phone as well as at Google forever
  6. The short message about permanent deletion is shown when it already is too late.
  7. And then they see that their beloved gallery is empty too - can you imagine their panic!
Google should be aware since years and was informed by me several times via feedback and via the successive community managers who hardly can do any good either. Apparently.
So what we can do more?

PS: the situation in the iOS-version of the app is less worse and these users have the luck that the trash in the Apple Photos app get filled and then they are able to recover them.

I am using Oppo Reno 10x. After the update of google photo I noticed that viewing photos on Google photo app turns out to be in dark purple colour. When I slide to next pic it is ok for few seconds and after that again it turns out to be purple. Please solve this issue as soon as possible.

Hi Abhishek,

several other users reported a similar issue and we already passed these reports to Google, so the Google Photos app will hopefully be fixed in a future version.

Question: Photos were fine. They were in date order with all to be seen

I have no idea why my photos are messed up by Google! I want simple date stamp order and want my duplicates. How can I return back to what I had and remove Google?

Answer:

Sorry, Google sorts on date also, so it is totally unclear why you want to have Google away.
But on the Photos-page you may have too large pictures: when you move two fingers together on screen, you can go to day-view or even monthview and that is much more comfortable.
And you can create thematic albums with chronologic sorting - these albums will survive your phone and can be shared also with interested people, family merely.
The Google-app is much more then a simple gallery and it will backup your photos privately and safe in case your phone falls in the Niagara like they always do.

I'm trying to add my wife to my Google family group so we can sync our photos on Google Photos together. We are originally from Australia but now we live in the US.

I can see there is an existing thread on this here, but it's locked so I'm creating this new post to express my frustration. https://support.google.com/photos/thread/483914/my-wife-is-trying-to-add-me-to-a-family-group-but-it-says-we-live-in-different-countries-why?hl=en

I've tried the upvoted answers:
  • deleted all payment profiles on both mine and wife's account
  • added cc to our account with same address
  • under settings both our account's region is set to US

What more can we do to get this to work? This is very frustrating.

Answer:

Chris,

I can see how that's extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, this is the Google Photos Help Community, and none of the volunteers here have access to any of your pictures, account data, or other information. Even though your goal involves pictures and sharing through Google Photos, your problem has nothing to do with the Photos service, but rather it's the fact that you're unable to add your wife to your family group.

That being said, my suggestion is that you contact Google support directly from the Google For Families Help page. On this page, you should see at the bottom a section that says "Need More Help?" and below that a button link that says "Contact Us"
