Hi, My mac start up disc is full. It's also a very old computer. I have 10,000 photos that I need to get off the computer from iphotos. It won't sync to google photos as it says your start up disc is full. I would like to keep them in their original size as there are wedding photo etc. I'm just so confused with these cloud based services. It seems they all Sync which i don't want. I just want to move them off the computer. Is my only option an external hard drive which i don't really want to do. I know I can move them to good drive but I will lose the photo dates... help..ahh

Phil,

Good afternoon. Have you tried uploading your pictures directly to the Google Photos website? If you can get your old computer online, visit the site and upload the pictures in batches. This will also allow you to create albums out of each batch you upload, while not getting bogged down trying to upload 10,000 all at once.

Also, if you need to keep the pictures exactly as they are (which is really only relevant if the originals are larger than 16MP), then you can change the settings on the Google Photos website to Original Quality before you begin uploading.

The steps are pretty easy :

Free up space on your iPhone or iPad

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app .
Sign in to your Google Account.
Tap Menu Free up space Remove.
When you’re asked for permission to delete photos, tap Delete.
Open the iPhone or iPad Photos app (not the Google Photos app).
Tap Recently Deleted and delete those same photos and videos.
To see your photos and videos, including ones you deleted from your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app .

There are complaints that it may take very long before the storage is recovered, if ever, which may at least partially be due to deleting items which do not use storage. Photos/videos uploaded with setting "High Quality" before June 1, 2021 do not recover any storage since they did not use any.

I recently installed Backup and Sync on my PC to upload my photos to Google. Unfortunately after the sync was already well under way, I noticed that a folder I created with lower resolution versions of some of my photos synced first and then backup and sync skipped the full resolution versions because they were "already in Google Photos." (Apparently it treats different resolution versions of the same image as identical.)

How do I get Backup and Sync to send the full resolution versions to the cloud? I tried removing the low resolution versions from the cloud and then restart Backup and Sync so it would re-scan, but it appears that it knows that those photos were already there and that I deleted them so it decides it should still skip them.

Is there a way to make it "forget" the deleted items so they will re-upload?

Do you also deleted the photo in the trash as well?

A solution that can help is to name differently the photo in high resolution?

I do myself add the _high suffixe to my photos with high resolution and didn't have this problem, at least, for now.

Thanks. I hadn't thought about the trash folder! I removed the deleted photos from the trash folder and restarted the sync on my computer but unfortunately they are still being skipped.

As for the filenames, they were already different filenames. Apparently Google is using some sort of hashing technique instead of filenames to identify unique files.

Also, I'm hoping any solution will involve deleting from the cloud rather than doing anything on the computer since it is hundreds of photos scattered across many different folders on the computer. Would be a huge chore if I had to rename each file on the computer.

hmmm - given your scenario, I would think that your higher resolution photos would be uploaded after deleting the low res copies from the cloud.

Have you tried manually uploading the ones you want? Assuming there is a folder full of photos you do want to upload, try the drag and drop method of uploading them.

Uninstall the Google Photos Backup app
Delete the following folder on your computer

On Windows: %localappdata%\\Google\\Google Photos Backup\\ (copy/paste the path into the address bar in "Windows Explorer" or "File Explorer")
