When you select "Space saver quality" for uploads, Google Photos compresses those automatically.

However, the ones on your phone would remain uncompressed. Are you looking for comressing those?

If you're doing this from iOS you can just turn off your backup and sync, this'll stop anything from being backed up to the cloud.

So Jenn, are you uploading these from iOS or desktop. I know you originally said iOS but I just wanted to make sure because 90,000 is alot of photos to store on a mobile device.

Just a remark: if you go into the preferences of the Backup & Sync app (cloud with arrow-up): did you switch-of under Change in the folderselection the uploading of any unwanted stuff like RAW-files and metadata? 

It makes no sense to upload RAW-files if you have selected free storage, because it are extreme files (so the uploading will be terribly slow), but at Google they are compressed to jpg-files of a few megabytes. 

And it makes no sense to upload the metadata which should not be visible at all and just fills Drive with garbage which can take a lot of storage. 

Can add no more because I have no Mac, but if everything already was in the library of https://photos.google.com I don't understand why B&S starts re-uploading: was there a large Mac-update or just a delayed update of B&S???

There can be multiple reasons for the backup not to happen.

 

# The quantum of photos to be backed is high.

# Insufficient free space on the phone for the app to work.

# WIFI connectivity is intermittent. Too many devices on the same router are restricting the bandwidth.

# Download & upload speeds are too asymmetric.

# Google Photos app is not allowed to use:-

• Data in the background
• Mobile data
• Mobile data while roaming

# Activation of data saver through the settings.

# Putting a limit on the daily use of mobile data through the settings in the app.

# Putting a limit on the use of total data in a month through the settings in the phone.

# Activating battery saver or super saver mode.

# Existence a zero byte file in the collection. 

# Bloatware on the phone interfering with the smooth working of apps.

# Too many apps running in the background.

 

Can you go through these checks & address these issues?

Hi I've this same problem. Some of my photos are not backing up. It says 'backup failed'. I have checked all the issues you've mentioned and other factors yet it still fails to backup. It says trouble loading file when it loads fine and similar pictures like that backed up fine.
