I suggest you clear the cached & stored data of the Google Photos app & then reinstall the app.

You can do that through these steps.

• On your Android phone, open the Settings.
• Tap Apps and notifications.
• Tap Show all apps.
• Tap Google Photos.
• Tap Storage and cache.
• Tap Clear storage.
• Next, uninstall the Google Photos app. 
• Power off the phone & then restart.
• Install the latest version of the Google Photos app through the Play Store.

Log into your profile & see whether that helps overcome the current problem.

However, regretfully, your query is not related to some feature in the Google Photos app.

 

Did you make some changes through the Settings -> Chats -> Media visibility in WhatsApp?

Nevertheless, WhatsApp hides the media folder from visibility to other apps usually.

But, you will find directions on how to unhide that on WhatsApp FAQ pages.

 

Additionally,

I suggest you use some file explorer app to view the media content on your phone. If your phone has none, please install the "Files" app by Google. Next, ensure in the setting of the app visibility of hidden files. Then search all the media folders for a hidden file of zero byte size. Delete that file & that should resolve your problem.

I have been using Google photos for 6 months and all of the photos of my iPhone where backed up here. Recently I removed all the photos form my phone that I didn't want anymore and kept only the ones I wanted. But on Google photos all the pictures I deleted are still saved and backed up. I want to have on Google photos exactly the same photos as on my iPhone collection and not the ones that I have deleted. How can I do that ?

You have chosen the most akward method in the world for downloading, but normally you would have hundreds of dayfolders containing pictures (jpg files mostly) and there corresponding textfiles (json) for all kind of additional information - mostly not important unless for descriptions enclosed. 

So it is unclear why the real jpg-files are gone - normal an empty folder only contains one json-file about the name of the folder. 

But tell us why you did start with this hopeless method.

The .json file is not an image but contains information about your images. See here for more info on a json file. If there were any images in that album, there would also be regular jpg files in the downloaded folder.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

 

You can follow these steps to move the pictures to the SD card using the Google Photos app, 

• Tap on the Library view.
• Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device.
• Select photos by long pressing, then tap others after a tick confirms the first selection. You can also long-press and slide down while still in pressed condition to select a range of pictures.
• Tap the three-dot menu top right
• Tap Move to folder
• Tap New SD folder, type a folder name, then tap Create

Note that if the photos are in the Google Photos cloud, this will not remove them from the Photos.

Further, even if you do not select this new SD folder for Backup & sync, any content in that will still be removed if deleted using the Google Photos app.

I can't find where to go on my PC to stop auto launch of Google Photos

That's quite a problem because this app is replaced by the more complex Backup & Sync app, so I can't see anymore what settings you have if you click right down in the system tray (maybe above ^) on its symbol. 

Perhaps there you do see the option needed. 

But if you don't need the app at all, you better can uninstall Google Photos Backup at all to prevent all future troubles with its automatic upgrade to Backup & Sync. 

In the Taskmanager on Windows-10 you also can switch-off Start-ups - click right on the Taskbar at the bottom and choose Taskmanager (more details > Start-up > select Google Backup > Switch-off right down - close the manager). Then restart your computer.

1) I don't understand why you all can't make it very clear and simple on how to uninstall the old Google Photos Backup. I'm on a Mac, and that pops up everytime I start up my computer and is incredibly annoying, and always tells me I have to install the new Backup & Sync.

How do I fix THAT?

Regretfully, on the phone, the Photos app doesn't show anything upfront to reveal whether that's backed up or not.

 

However, the following due diligence will ensure everything from your phone is there on the cloud.

• Go to the library view & tap view all on the "Photos on device" tab. In that view, no folder should have a cloud symbol with a slash on that. If you find so, please tap the folder & switch on Backup & sync.
• Check the status of Backup & sync in settings. That should say "Backup complete".

Moreover, some social media apps hide the download folders from visibility through Google Photos.

Nevertheless, you can manage that unhiding through the settings in the respective app.

 

Once you ensure everything as above, you can be sure about the backup status of the photos & videos on your phone.
