Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!

I have 66,193 Photos in Google Photos, which I can easily see here: https://myaccount.google.com/dashboard

That is the beauty of Google Photos, that you can keep all of your photos in one place.

Now, I can understand why any of us might not want to have all of their images on their phone or tablet.  There is an easy solution to this - once you have backed up your images to Google Photos, you can use "Free up space" from the 3 line menu which removes all backed up images, but they are still visible from the cloud (via Wi-Fi or data).


If this doesn't make sense or if you have questions, check back via the link.

Never use the ~Garbage Can~ icon to remove photos you want from your phone - it deletes the images everywhere (but you may be able to recover them from the trash if they were previously uploaded to Google Photos - https://photos.google.com/u/0/trash )

Hi Namir,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

I certainly understand your concern regarding face group. For this, could you please confirm if the face recognition works on the web version of the Google Photos?

Please know that, there isn't a way to manually add a new face group. Since you don't see any more pets and people photos in the 'People & Pets' folder, you may try to toggle the below settings:
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. 
  3. Tap Menu   Settings  Group similar faces.
  4. Turn off Face grouping.
  5. Turn on Face grouping.
Note: Once you turn on the face grouping, Google Photos does take a certain amount of time to scan the photos and add them in the 'People' folder. I'd suggest you to sit back and relax and wait for a couple of days.

If the issue persists, please follow these steps:
  • Sign out of your Google account and sign back in.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
  • Restart your device.
  • Take a look at your Wi-Fi connection and make sure it's up and running (it doesn't hurt to disconnect it and reconnect it).

I followed steps here which cleared ALL of my people and pets and has not returned to grouping familiar faces. Thanks for breaking the system further.

I also have some people and pets but Google vanished two of the pet's albums. I am not going to turn it on and off to lose them.

Really want to manually create a face group with a few seed faces and have google find the rest. Still looking for how to do this.

The idea of clearing the app is pretty poor - this is a server side thing.

As one member, and after more a month struggling with Google photo team with no results, tried everything they advice me to do with no result, endless no logical advises & as PM in Tech company, i told them that the methodology of tracking the issue is not even within the fair standards & they finally admitted its a bug and they will get back to me once solved, & i dont thik it will be solved soon since im reading same concerns from tons of people since early 2017. eventually i did it from my side and it worked for me. please follow the below hopeful it will work for you too

  • ​​I have more than 25 K images and 3 K videos
  • I download them all 500 by 500 from google photo (be careful not to download more than two files together cause eventuality you will have some corrupted zipped files)
  • Make sure to unzip all files successfully
  • gather the photos in a folder & Videos in another folder
  • upload the two folders (Photos & Videos) to google drive
  • after uploading them successfully, go to google photo and delete everything, the images, the videos, the places, even go to suggested in "Assistant tab" and remove everything.. at the button of "assistant tab you will find "view unsaved creation" also access it and delete everything
  • navigate to setting, sharing and activate "Sharing suggestion notifications" and deactivate the rest three
  • go to your mobile and delete the data of photo app and uninstall it
  • make sure to clear cash, history from any browser in your mobile
  • Go to desktop & delete cash, history and every thing in your browser and close it
  • install tunnelbear VPN, on both your mobile & desktop try to subscribe for a month or even tweet about it in twitter to get extra mb
  • run tunnelbear vpn and connected it to USA
  • install Firefox browser
  • open incognito mode
  • login to your photo account
  • go to upload and chose upload from drive
  • upload your images (not the videos) (i selected the whole 25 K image and upload them at once, its time consuming to select them, but be patient
  • wait until the upload complete
  • leave the browser (firefox) open for 15 - 20 min
  • clear history , cash and every thing
  • disconnect from tunnelbear from your desktop and mobile
  • close the browser and wait for 12 hours max,  in meanwhile do not install photo app, do not open photo.google.com in any browser
  • open tunnelbear in your desktop (only)
  • connect to USA
  • open firefox, incognito mode and access your photo account,
  • you should see the people is working, if not (and this what happened to me) deactivate & reactivate people grouping feature
  • clear cash & history
  • disconnect from tunnelbear
  • wait another 12 hours without accessing photo from anywhere
  • without opening tunnelbear access photo from browser (and here i found 100s of phases listed in people section, places, things also worked for me... but you need to activate pets manualy from grouping people section
The problem solved for me.... maybe part of the steps are not necessary, but was trying some problem solving tactics to eliminate the factor of the location as possible and for issue diagnosing, I will be honest, i didnt know what is the exact formula of solving the issue
