If you open an image  from your main photo stream on Google Photos and go to the : menu in the upper right corner, you should see an option to 'Save to Device'

This option will appear if the image is not in local storage.

If the image is already on local storage, the option to Save to Device will not show since it is already on the device.

A little screen keeps popping up that saying Google photos isn't responding. I've restarted my phone, installed updates, uninstalled updates, turned it off and waited, uninstalled my Android view, reinstalled my Android view. I've literally done everything I can think of. This has been happening for 2 days now and I'd really like to be able to access my photos.

How much is the free space on your phone?

Apps can misbehave when the space is insufficient.

 

Nevertheless, can you try clearing the cached & stored data through the steps below?

 

I suggest you clear the cached & stored data of the Google Photos app & then reinstall the app.

You can do that through these steps.

• On your Android phone, open the Settings.
• Tap Apps and notifications.
• Tap Show all apps.
• Tap Google Photos.
• Tap Storage and cache.
• Tap Clear storage.
• Next, uninstall the Google Photos app or rollback to the factory fitted version.
• Power off the phone & then restart.
• Install the latest version of the Google Photos app through the Play Store.

Log into your profile & see whether that helps overcome the current problem.

There is no Google Photos app for Windows PC.

However, you can enter the link https://photos.google.com in any browser available on yourPC and access almost all the features in Google Photos.

However, the PC needs to have sufficient memory & computing power.

Hi all - I've been having this problem for a few months now, and I'm really stuck. Whenever I download any photo(s) from my Google account, the metadata gets changed on the downloaded file to show the date and time it was downloaded (in PST, even though I'm in EST), as opposed to the date and time the photo was actually taken. So for example, I'll take a photo on my phone, back it up in Photos, and then Photos will show the correct date and time it was taken - but when I try to download it to my desktop, the metadata changes to the date and time of download in PST.

I'm using a 2017 MacBook Pro running Monterey and using Chrome as my browser (though I've tried other browsers and encountered the same problem). I first noticed the issue when I upgraded my OS from Catalina to Big Sur. When I updated to Big Sur and the problem began on my primary account, I was able to share my Photos with other Google accounts I have access to and download them from those accounts with no problems - so the bug was only affecting some accounts. That workaround would usually work well enough for a month or two before the secondary account would also develop the problem, and I'd have to try sharing with another account. When I updated to Monterey last week, it started affecting all of my Google accounts.

Any tips? This is driving me nuts, I'm desperate to have the correct date and time on my downloads.

Hi Rinus, thanks for your response - I've attached some screenshots of the problem. Unfortunately I don't have access to a Windows computer, so I can't download them that way. That said, I feel rather confident that it's a Mac-only issue, because I consulted a Reddit group before this forum and found other users experiencing the same issue there, and one of those Redditors had both a Mac and a PC and said the issue was only on his Mac.

I have been doing some testing to replicate the change in behaviour and am trying to anticipate any questions from the techs when we get a reply from the escalation.

 

Do you use iCloud, if yes could you download a photo from iCloud to see what dates you get. From what I see they behave in almost the same manner except for the PST difference.

Google Takeout can be used to download individual albums. Go to Google Dashboard and expand the Photos tab then left click on the 3 dots and select Download data. If you wait a minute until 'All photos albums included' pops up then click on it and deselect all.

 

Then scroll down and select any Albums you have created

You will now get a single copy of each photo, one json file per photo, and one filename-edited.jpg for each edited photo. The json files contain the date, location, and descriptions added in Google Photos

 

The json files can be merged with the jpgs using a utility such as the one referred to below. The Fixer process is actually more convenient that trying to unzip manually.

Did you make some changes through the Settings -> Chats -> Media visibility in WhatsApp?

Nevertheless, WhatsApp hides the media folder from visibility to other apps usually.

But, you will find directions on how to unhide that on WhatsApp FAQ pages.

 

Additionally,

I suggest you use some file explorer app to view the media content on your phone. If your phone has none, please install the "Files" app by Google. Next, ensure in the setting of the app visibility of hidden files. Then search all the media folders for a hidden file of zero byte size. Delete that file & that should resolve your problem.

I've checked the Settings and the options for every Google app on this device as well as every other app on this device. 

I had thought I found it in one of the 'Photos' settings about " allowing additional access " to the SD card storage, but the instructions say go to 'Recent' in the Nenu as the very first step, but the place it brings you via the "GET STARTED" link at the bottom of the instructions, doesn't have a "Menu" or "Recent" anywhere. 

It used to be easy to set up an SD card in an Android phone. What the heck happened? Is this like an apple thing where you're going to discontinue the SD card storage option but someone goofed up and forgot some phones still need the system to allow access on phones that still have a slot?!
