Google Photos freezes my Android device

Question: Google Photos freezes my Android device

Google Photos freezes my device EVERY TIME one of my

Google Photos freezes my device EVERY TIME one of my 4k30fps videos starts playing in the thumbnail. This forces me to hold the power button to restart. This has has been happening for the past week and and is not my manufacturer's fault as I didn't receive any system updates for months. I have tried force stopping Google Photos, clearing cache / all data, reinstalling & updating the app but it didn't work. I have also left feedback on the app and in the google play store. My smartphone (Poco X3 NFC) is quite powerful (Snapdragon 732G) and this only happens in google photos.

Please provide me with any help, I don't know what else to try.

Update: I did a factory reset a few weeks back but unfortunately the bug didn't go away, I can't use google photos anymore as it's an extremely annoying bug. I'll update if I fix it.

Even after the 21st june update, images and aren't taking up space on Google photos.

I've confirmed that they are actually being uploaded to photos and are not just on my local storage. I did this by logging into the Google account on a separate phone and all the pictures were there.

I'm very confused about this, I've uploaded 200gb+ of images and videos on this free  account and they are not taking up any space. Am i missing something? Is the storage still unlimited in some cases?

i recently upgraded for more google storage.  pictures and videos are automatically being uploaded for backup.
this is my question:  can i now delete the photos on my phone and will they delete from shared albums ?
i'm so nervous about freeing up space and deleting photos only to find they are gone forever from my phone, files and shared albums.
thank you.

Answer:

Hi, Heidi Kroft

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Once the backup & sync is on, never delete the pics directly. Else, because of the sync action, you will lose both the one on the phone and the cloud at the same time.

Nevertheless, to remove pics from the phone gallery but retain the copies in Google Photos is relatively easy.

To do so, tap on the photo you want to remove & then slide up.
Below the photo, if you find the text "Delete from device", then tap on that.
If not, the photo is not there on the cloud & you need to upload that first.

If you want to take the same action in bulk, use the option "Free up space".
Then, the app backs up everything first & removes the originals from the device.

However, consider creating a local backup on some hard dik etc, before using the free up space option.

When I share a photo it gives me suggestions based on interaction (not very accurate) I want to get rid of some suggestions or rid of all of them. How can I do this

Answer:

Hi Dominic

There is currently no setting in Google Photos to control the dynamic suggestions for sharing.

The only place I know of where to control those types of settings is with Gmail and Contacts. However, adjusting these settings may affect your experience of Gmail, so you can decide if you want to make these changes.

1. On a web browswer, open https://gmail.google.com
2. Select Settings
3. Select General tab > Create contacts > Select I'll add contact myself

  1. Select frequent contacts
  2. Select the check box on any name you don't want appearing and delete
  3. NOTE: Some of the frequent contacts are in your Contacts list, and others aren't so you can determine if you want to delete them or add them to your Contacts.  As you scroll over the name in the Frequent Contact list, you'll notice to the right and icon with a person and a plus sign.  This indicates the contact is not yet in your Your Contacts section.  You can select the peron + icon to add to Your Contacts.  So you can decide to either delete the contact, or add them.  Deleting them may (eventually) remove them from any auto suggestions, as you have now also changed the Gmail setting to add contacts yourself.
As I said above, changing these settings may affect your experience of Gmail and Contacts, and when I have fiddled with them, it had a knock-on affect on some other app auto-suggestions, but it was not definitiive.  Eventually I returned them to default settings and moved on.

Play with the settings, and see if it creates the experience you want.  If not, then change them back to default (Gmail adds contacts automatically).  You may want to export all contacts before you start playing with this, in case you delete a contact you decide later that you want.

Other than that I don't know of a way.  You can use the Feedback menu option in Photos to make a feature request for adjusting sharing suggestions.

Best,

Joe

Answer:

Hi, Linda Murray 3445

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

I suggest you follow these steps to remove the person from the current grouping & add that to another grouping
  • Tap to open the photo.
  • Tap the three dots at the top right corner.
  • Now, you will see a thumbnail of all the identified persons and also a pencil icon . Tap that icon.
  • Now, all the identified faces will display a minus sign at the top left corner of the thumbnail. Tap that.
  • The thumbnail will now move down to the row of faces below with the tag "Available to add" and the minus sign will now change to plus.
  • Tap that plus. Now, the app will show the entire gallery of the persons identified to date. Tap on the right one & now the photo will get added to the correct grouping.

Hi, Jennifer Etienne

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, regretfully, your query is not related to some feature in the Google Photos app.

Did you make some changes through the Settings -> Chats -> Media visibility in WhatsApp recently?
Nevertheless, WhatsApp hides the media folder from visibility to other apps, usually.
But, you will find directions on how to unhide that on WhatsApp FAQ pages.

Hi there,

Permanently deleted video/photos can no longer be recovered on Google Photos.

But there is a third party app that you may try to use to recover your permanently deleted photos/videos.

You may download the File Recovery from the Google Play Store(Android Device only).

That app can recover permanently deleted files(photos/videos). I'm also using it.

Hi Doa,

Currently Google Photos does not offer this feature.

You can use the Feedback menu option in Google Photos under your profile icon to make a feature request so the team can track user interest. You may want to include a brief sentence how you expect this to be helpful, or what you would like to see so the team can best understand user intent.

Cheers,

Forget about - many already have asked this for five years.
Better to tell us why you need this, because Google Photos can sort on dates only.
So you may need to switch to another platform like OneDrive if you are on Windows-10 also.

Question: Photos to SD card

Hi, Karrie Gieser

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Although there are multiple ways to transfer the content from the internal memory of the phone to an SD card, doing so through Google Photos allows retaining the backup and sync aspect.
Please follow the steps below to achieve the transfer.
  • Open Google Photos.
  • Tab Library.
  • Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device like Camera, Screenshots etc.
  • Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
  • You can also long-press and stroke down while still in a pressed condition, to select a batch.
  • Next, tap the 3 dot menu top right.
  • Tap Move to folder.
  • Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create.
Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos, and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if you delete that using the Google Photos app.

Question: How to avoid photos in Blogspot becoming 'Google User Content'?

For my photo website, I upload series of photos which are intended to tell a story without words. Up until two days ago, these series could be viewed by simply clicking from one photo to the other. An example:
https://extremefootballtourism.blogspot.com/2021/08/belgium-r-jupille-fc-1940-1992-r-union.html

Since Wednesday (18th of Aug) however, each photo is being given a Google User Content hyperlink, as a result of which it is impossible to browse easily from photo to photo - instead, visitors have to go back to the original article after clicking a photo, and then click another photo. As such, the notion of the photos telling a story goes out of the window. Moreover, it makes the site less user friendly in general. An example:
Clicking the first photo in this series, there is a huge hyperlink which does not allow clicking on to photo 2 etc.:

How can I circumvent this problem? Any ideas? I have more than enough storage room; this should not be the issue. Your input would be much appreciated.

Answer:

Please ask the Blogger-forum.
But on my Android I had no problem to see the next photo by tipping.
So it maybe a browser-problem on your computer.
This forum restricts to Google Photos and that is already dramatically enough.
Sorry

Answer:

I see, but probably in the Roeselaere-blog only.
I don't see any strange codes appearing in Chrome or Edge on my Windows-pc, but the mouse pointer acts as an enlarger. So you may need to re-edit that special blog.
It is too long agoo for me that I have used Blogger very often, so I can't guess what you did wrong.
But I see that the photos start with no space under the text and that is not nice.
Best

PS: you are using extremely large pictures taking a lot of space at Google. 1600px was standard in Blogger and good enough for normal 1920x1080 screens.

Answer:

No, it is just in accident in that special blog.
The too large size is just not needed for general use on the web and will cost a lot.

What are the settings needed to have Google Backup and Sync photos as well as videos from Apple Photos V 2.0 to Google Photos and NOT Google Drive (MacOS Sierra 10.12.6)? I have Backup and sync installed and "Google Photos" and "Upload newly added photos and videos to Google Photos" selected but videos in Apple Photos are not not being backed to Google Photos and it seems neither are photos unless they are taken on my phone (specifically; photos stored in Apple Photos taken on my DSL are not currently being back up to Google Photos)? As my Apple Photos library is quite large, I do not want photos or videos backed up to Google Drive, I just want them automatically backed up to Google Photos (My Google Drive does not have available capacity to back up up my entire Apple Photos library which is currently around 1.3TB).  If I select the "Photos" folder in "Choose Folders" in Backup and Sync, it backs up all photos and videos to Google Drive which I don not want. This used to be a very straightforward process but not any more in terms of JUST backing up to Google Photos vs Google Drive. For example, how does Google Photos know where the Apple Photos library is in Backup and sync? Is I mentioned, I selected "Upload newly added photos and videos to Google Photos" but at no time was I asked to point Google Photos to the Apple Photos library I wish to back up? Attached is a screen shot of my current Backup and Sync Preferences. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Hello Mark,

Possibly too much for the app, Google are aware, but we don’t have any updates.

The safest option is to move the photos to a Computer using a USB cable which has the advantage of being able to recover any lost stragglers.

Deleting from the device by using Gallery Go by Google may be a useful method. You can select a group of photos and use the Share option to Upload to Photos, this will confirm they are backed up, then select the same group and move to trash. Back to the Gallery Go main page and use the 3 dot menu to select trash and empty it.

If you are sure items are backed up at https://photos.google.com/ you can safely delete using any gallery app

I'm glad to see your response is inline with what I ended up doing. As far as I could tell everything in my camera file was safely backed up so I went ahead and deleted the entire contents of the folder. There were about 20,000 images so there was no way I was going to do that manually.

Hi Shreyaash,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
