If the photos of your SMS/MMS are automatically getting backed up to Google Photos, then please follow the steps below to stop it:

To back up device folder:

Open Google Photos app.
Go to the More option (three horizontal lines icon).
Go to Settings.
Go to 'Back up & sync' option.
Go to 'Back up device folder'.
Tap Back up device folders and deselect the folders (to disable) you don't want to back up.

Folders can include:

Photos you've downloaded.
Screenshots you've taken.
Photos saved by other apps (Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, SMS, etc).

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

When the quantum of photos to awaiting the free up action is too large & also the phone has very little space, the "free up space" command fails to do anything.

The app may also crash.

To mitigate the problem, please start deleting manually.

Tap to open a picture. If you find text "Delete from device" tap on that.

Once a sizable space is free, you can use the "Free up space" option without any glitch.

I'll be happy to help. Are the photos in Google Photos? If yes, please confirm if you're referring to deleting photos and videos from Google Photos?

Remove photos and videos:

On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
Place your cursor over items you want to move to trash. At the top left, click Select . You can alsoselect multiple items.
At the top right, click Trash .
To permanently delete photos and videos, click Menu Trash select the photo or video Trash

Know where photos do and don't get removed from before you delete photos and videos in Google Photos:

Photos and videos you delete are also removed from:

photos.google.com and any synced devices
Google Photos albums
Google Photos movies when you edit them. Learn more about deleted photos in movies.
Google Drive, for photos and videos that are synced with Google Drive. Learn how Google Drive works with Google Photos.
Any shared albums you may have added them to.

Photos and videos you delete are not automatically removed from:

Blogger
YouTube
Gmail
Google+

Here's a help article to know more about deleting photos and videos in Google Photos. You would need to download all the content (photos and videos) to another storage device (like a phone, memory stick or SD card) from Google Photos, then delete them. Having done that, you can now move or transfer your photos back to Google Photos of the same account.

Head over to https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement This should give a clue on where the storage is being used.

If you have used Backup and Sync or have a legacy Google Photos folder in My Drive then deleting in Google Photos simply transfers the storage to Google Drive.
