I can't delete photos from google drive. I will never use this again once I get these 1000 photos off. I've followed the advice given 'krissy' and when I got to the trash icon in the upper right hand corner NOTHING happens.

If you save your partner’s photos, they’ll appear in your Google Photos account, search results and can be used for personalized creations.
Any photos you save from partner sharing won’t take up storage, unless your partner stops sharing their photos with you, or deletes the original copy.
 
It is possible that the original copy is not deleted yet, or that there is a delay in the update ...

I have photos in hundreds of nested subfolders on Google Drive. I'm looking for a way to get all the photos into Google Photos. Google Photos only allows me to pick one folder at a time and ignores subfolders when I use the Upload from Google Drive option.

Is there any way that I can accomplish the above without it being a tedious manual selection of each of the hundreds of subfolders. Multi-select of folders or inclusion of subfolders would be awesome! Just for clarity, I don't expect to Google Photos to create albums based on subfolder, I just want to get all of the photos across in an easy way.

In that way you only can do that folder by folder. That is the same when uploading from computer.  
But if you install Backup @ Sync on your computer, then you temporarily can use the Drive-section for downloading that folderstructure to you computer. 

Thereafter you can switch-off the syncing and then move these folders to the Pictures folder a then you can use the Computer-section of the app for uploading to Google Photos in High Quality mode for using no storage in your account. And at the same time these folders are synced to the new Computer folder on Drive, but taking no space there either (normally). 
If all is done (can take many hours of intense internetusage), you can remove the old folders from Drive in order to free-up space in your account. 

So a quite complex operation, but I am not aware of any other way. 
Good luck and be very carefull about your settings.

Guys I found an easy way to transfer from Google Drive to Google Photos. 

All you do in Google Photos is click on the upload top right in Google Photos, even if you actually want to download to there.

Then click on Google Drive in the drop down and click on My Drive. 

Select your photos with Ctrl A and click on the blue upload button that pops up at the bottom once you selected the files. 

Have fun guys.

I agree that importing a folder from GDrive then re-making the album in GPhotos is a PITA. It remains laborious, but the fact that you have to find the photos in the library after uploading makes it even more difficult. You can try the following to make it a bit easier:
  • You can try to search in Google Photos with the title of a folder in Drive. That used to create a search result with the photos that are in that folder. You can then more easily select them and add to an album. It is possible (but not sure) that this method still works with older folders. 
  • You can select new uploads in "Recently added" https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_. Problem may be that already uploaded photos will not be found there
  • If that does not work you can select folders with photos taken on specific days, making it easier to locate the photos in the library
  • For really difficult cases (photos with very different dates in a folder) it may be easier to download/upload directly to an album. Having an additional copy is a very good idea anyway.
Finally, some third party software claims to add automatically photos from folders to albums. Not tested thus at your own risk:  https://www.picbackman.com/. Only free for 5000 pics, but you could  pay for one month of unlimited use, backup all your photos and folders to Google Photos, and from then on add your new photos manually. See also https://digitalfilmmaker.net/google-photos-backup/

My google storage hit 97% and realize that the google photo (which had some albums and is also backing up for my tablet and smartphone) shows 8+ GB of storage used. In order to free up space, I deleted almost all my albums only leaving a few images and also did some house keeping for my 2 devices. I also make sure after I deleted, the trash in google photo is emptied. However, the storage space only reduce slightly. I checked my 2 devices and the videos and images together only account for less than 2GB.  Why is this the case?
