Seeing your photos in the app does not indicate that they are backupped all - then you need to view under the small circle right-up if there is a message "backup completed". 

Maybe you have forgotten to look to the backupsettings via settings under the small circle. 

You also can check photos.google.com in the Chrome-app for your account. 

Hopefully the deleted photos are still in the trash on the Library-page or in the trash of the standard Gallery and can be recovered.

To recreate that, open the app drawer by sliding your two fingers from bottom to top.

It is possible that the placeholders have become 'confused' a complete reset of the Google Photos app may be required.

1. Check the app trash to make sure there are no photos and videos mistakenly deleted
   • Empty the trash
2. tap the account icon at the top right
3. tap your email address and select Use without an account 
4. Power down/up or restart the device
5. sign in again making sure you are using the correct email
6. check that the Backup & sync settings are correct and using the correct email
7. wait until getting photos finishes, could take a while
   • Please wait until it completes leaving the app open and plugged in if necessary.

My dad likes to email the photos he took of his grand-kids when he was over and I want to keep them with the rest of my pictures in Google Photos.  It's been really slick to just click the Save to Drive icon on each one because with Photo's Drive Sync setting enabled they automatically appear in photos.  It's great - I don't have to download and upload each one.  But, they've been collecting in Drive where they count against storage space so I ultimately only want them in Photos.  If I delete them in Drive will they stay in Photos?  I've read some help pages that make it sound like they will end up deleting from both places.  Can I turn the sync off, then delete them from drive, then turn the sync on again for future pictures, or would I loose those pictures from Photos when I turn off the sync?  It's a lot of pictures.  So, what's the quickest/safest way to accomplish this?

Hi Erik,

 

You will lose the photos if you turn off the sync then delete them from Drive.

 

If you add the photos to an album in Google Photos a new copy will be added to your Google Photos library which is independent of the Google Drive copy.  You can now delete the Google Drive copy without affecting the new Google Photos copy.  The storage space will only be reclaimed when the trash is empty.

 

You could also download the photos to your computer then upload them direct to the web via the browser Upload icon.

 

In Google Photos Search you can also search for the Google Drive folder name (must be a unique folder name in Drive, duplicate folder names will not show. When the folder is selected you can select all the photos it contains (max 500) and add them to a New Album then delete the Google Drive folder.

Thanks for offering so many options, even if none are ideal at this time.  I'll probably create an album for the pictures that were emailed to me.  It seems silly to have to take the extra step to keep pictures that were emailed to me in my Photos library.  I might as well just download them from Gmail and upload them to Photos.  I just wrote in Gmail's feedback the suggestion to have a one-click add to your Photos library option, just like they have for add to Drive and download.

I don't know about any video, but that can be very old. But I have the Dutch-version of the Google Photos app on Android and the first or second word under the 3 dots in an album is "Select" (not Edit) and the second or third words are "Edit album" and that is what you need and I have described before. 

Then you need to hold your fingertip for a second on a picture before you are able to drag it to another position between two pictures and then let it drop there by moving your finger up.

The free up option removes the originals of backed up pics from the phone.

That creates space to capture new photos.

Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

 

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

 

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, that will not restore the local folder structure.

There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone. 

However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

 

That will bring everything to your phone.

Did not help since years. 

But duplicates don't need to eat additional storage if high quality is used - they just are irritating merely. 

So you have to find-out why they are created and because you don't explain anything about your workflow, we can't help to prevent them in future. 

In all cases it are pictures with modified metadata due to user actions and therefor you need to view them on https://photos.google.com with their infopanel open to be able to view that data and to be able to decide which one can be deleted without causing other damage, like being removed from a shared album.
