When the quantum of photos to awaiting the free up action is too large & also the phone has very little space, the "free up space" command fails to do anything. 

The app may also crash.

 

To mitigate the problem, please start deleting manually. 

To do so, tap to open the photo. If you find an option "Delete from device" below the pic, tap that.

 

Once a sizable space is free, you can use the "Free up space" option without any glitch.

However, before deleting any picture, it's always prudent to copy those on some external HDD. That eliminates the chance of any accidental loss of the media from the phone or cloud.

If not, I recommend checking the below options to find out the videos:

If you don't find the photos, I recommend looking for the photos using the below links:

I have started to use Google Photos during this past 4 days and its pretty nice that it's unlimited storage. I've uploaded 45 GB worth of photos and videos from my computer. Then yesterday I received an email from my Internet Service Provider saying that I've hit my 1 TB (1000 GB) data cap and I had to pay a fee for overage. There's no chance in hell I use that much data. Judging from my data usage from the past 3 years, I've been using data about 300 GB monthly. I spoke to my ISP technician on the phone and he said that the spike of data happen recently. All I can think of that is out of my regularly network use routine is using Google Photos. So I turn on my Traffic Meter feature on my router to see how much data is actually being transferred when uploading my 2.37 GB album to Google Photos. 2.37 GB of data becomes 40GB being used up!!! So 45 GB I've uploaded during those 4 days kills 700 GB of my data! Why extra data are being used? Is Google secretly stealing my photos without my knowledge? I don't know. I've noticed that the photos upload speed is fine but when it comes to videos, it takes forever to upload and probably the culprit that drains the majority of my data.

I'm browsing through the community support page who have similar issues but on their smart phone devices.

Why it takes soo much data to upload? Please fix this

First of all, uploading original (raw data) will use up your Google Drive storage quota, so you're wrong on that. I've uploaded in Google Photos using the high quality option (data will be compressed) so that I can take advantage of the unlimited storage. If I uploaded original, I'm far exceed the standard 15gb quota on google drive. From my previous post, I've said that I posted 45gb of data already. My question is why did it suck up a lot of bandwidth to upload data. Please read before you post and don't give me cut and paste answers.

I have the same issue. I uploaded 100GB videos on Google photo. But a Google photo up-loader spent 600GB more from 21h ~ 18h! I screenshoted statistics from my Asus router. Please check the attached file. I've experienced several times of this problem. I think this is  really the big issue for users. 

When I uploaded small size files, it was OK.

When I uploaded 2 big size files(15GB), it spent 21GB. 

When I uploaded many big size files(over 30 files~, 100GB), Google photo usually drained a lot of DATA almost 600GB.

What's wrong with Google photo?

We are all users here and we can't explain that amount of data-traffic overhead. 

Must have something to do with extensive checks and "handshaking" about "next package please". 

If you see the terrible amount of overhead behind a simple mailmessage, you may understand how complicated internettraffic goes nowadays.

PS: that is something different from uploading a 20 MB camera-raw file which gets compressed to a 2MB jpg file because you have chosen High Quality instead of Original for claiming free storage. Then you also have had 18 MB overhead, because the  compression is not before uploading (like in the past), but afterwards at Google. The same for extreme 4K videofiles which will get compressed to HD-quality.

I've experienced the same issue. I uploaded 6.84GB of videos and pictures through the Chrome browser and my traffic meter on my router shows that I uploaded closer to 60GB. I went over my data cap for the first time in 5 years last month, this is likely the cause. In the past the household averages around 500GB/month. Anyone heard what might be causing this?

Photos are never backed up to Google Photos from My Drive

For Adding a folder from the computer it defaults to Sync to Google Drive. Backup to Google Photos is an extra step under your control.

 

What you mean by 'Import' is critical.

In Drive for desktop,

Mirror files would sync between computer and Google Drive

Stream files allows selective upload, but cannot be indexed for search

I have previously posted this, but I will repost because I have yet to receive a response to my issue, and my patience has been wearing thin for days I have yet to receive a reply. I am frankly getting frustrated by the lack of customer support service to my issue.

I am having an issue downloading some photos from my Google Photos.

I am aware that my Photos are the one using up the most storage on my account, and so far, it has been frustrating that I have not been able to resolve this issue on my own yet. 

The issue that I seem to keep getting is the one of "Failed Network error" whenever I try to download multiple photos and videos at once, so as to try to free up my storage space at once.

This issue has happened on both my PC devices. I would select all the photos and videos under the section ("Large photos and videos") which is using up the most storage of 21 GB. 

The point of selecting everything all at once is to quickly reduce the storage space, but I get a frustrating error message that says "Failed Network" and I have tried to locate the issue on each PC device to see what the issue was, and there was never anything to troubleshoot. 

My plan was to download everything under the "large photos and videos" section to back them up on different files onto each PC device, including on my hard drive.

In conclusion, I have tried to reduce the storage space on my Photos, but the only issue holding me back is the download error of "Failed Network." 

And I would purchase a storage plan, but due to financial difficulties at home, I do not have the money or time to purchase a storage plan and waste my money, when I can literally just use Google Drive for free. I would just like to have more than enough room on my storage so that I can continue to upload important files, such as for my academics and stuff, which I am currently in the midst of, at the moment.

How I do resolve the Failed Network error message?

Apologies for your frustration, these questions should never be ignored. The problem is that we can do nothing to help solve network issues. I use Google Photos for zips up to 50GB with no problems and in that situation cannot escalate as a Google Photos issue.

 

All I can suggest is to select the top 10, download then delete, then carry on in batches from there.
