Answer:

The best way is to do the original deletion from the Google Photos app. That deletes from the Google cloud AND the device. Then Apple sees that the device copy is deleted and syncs that to iCloud.

Unlike Apple, Google is OK with deleting the device copy and leaving the cloud copy in tact, So deleting the device copy using the Apple photos app has no effect on the Google cloud copy.

Yes - isn't that annoying!?!? I've submitted feedback several times that we need a way to search for albums while in process of adding a photo to an album.

There are 2 little tricks:

On a computer, when you are adding a photo to an album and you have the list of albums onscreen, you can use Ctrl-F to search the list. You're limited to the list of albums that have been loaded into the dropdown.
You can search for the album first - open it up and use the +Add photos button to add your most recent photo (you'll remove it later) That will force the album to be on top of the list when you go to add a photo to an album.

Is there a way to delete all, or at least filter photos originating from one device? My family signed into Google photos on another account on my iPad and immediately started uploading every photo on that device and I'd like to delete them.

You can search for all photos taken with a particular camera, but it's picky. I can't just search for iPad and have it work. What I do is open one photo I know was taken with my iPad and notice that the info says the camera was Apple iPad mini. If I copy that and paste into the search box and it does come up with all photos taken with my iPad. Then you could select them all and delete.

If the photos were all uploaded recently, an easy way to see them would be view Recently Added - then they'll be all together. On the web version, click Explore - then Recently added.

Thanks for the response. Sure, I just tried again, the copy text hover option is there, then I apply the Auto filter and hit Done, the hover option is now "Order photo" instead. This is on a desktop browser, not in the phone app. Have you also tried doing it from an album? Doesn't show up there as well. The Lens option in the Android app also provides other features as well, but unfortunately for some reason these are absent in a web browser.

I attached screenshots showing this. In 1st, Copy text is shown. In 2nd, viewing same picture from an album view instead of the main view - Copy text is not shown, no hover option shown at all. I then Edit and apply Auto filter. In 3rd, after hitting Done, the Copy text option is gone and is replaced by Order photo option. If Order photo is closed then no hover option is displayed, but I have seen it come back sometimes after checking on it sometime later. These hover options seem like a faulty design, they're inconsistent and multiple available options cause some to be blocked and not displayed since only one can be displayed at a time. Why not have all those options in the regular permanent and consistent menu instead.

You are very right, but the simple reason behind is that the albumcontent can be sorted in different ways - even quite random manually. And you simply should restrict albums to the old limit of 2000 because 20.000 is always hopeless - especially for sharing.

Besides: you can't search in albums - that only can be done in the general searchpage and then you need to open the infopanel of individual picture to be able to see to which album(s) it is assigned.

But there is no Google here, so best to share your feature-request straight with Google via the feedback option under the question mark on photos.google.com - maybe that will help in far future.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, searching in albums is another feature that's missing. I did also do the feedback option, for both of these feature requests. That is about being able to have a custom sort in albums, but why not at least have an option to have the timeline if custom sort isn't used. Not sure if limiting is best for user experience.

But it the past it was unhandy if you had 2222 images instead of 1999+ cover, but now that is no problem to have a bit more.

PS: in my personal yearalbums with carefully selected and edited images (shared ones included) I don't reach 2000 anymore, but I am very old :-)

Not sure if I have that many in any of my albums myself either, but who am I to say what other users' use cases and needs are. The more options and freedom the better, power to the users :) But even with just 2000 photos it could be really hard to find a photo, chronological order and timeline (and album search) could help a lot.

Of course: freedom for all, but searching for a partical photo always has been a difficult indepent of any album. If your album is named Rome-2010, it is quite easy to find that photo just by eye and slow scrolling. And if your album is named 2010, it still is quite easy to find that specific photo shooted in Rome, but much more difficult to find a random photo shooted in other months unless you have typed a description which contains a keyword that can be typed in the searchbox above the general page.

So you have to find-out the best way for you - see Searching

Good morning

Google Photos does not work with formal keyword-tags, it only can search for words recognised in pictures or words you have used in descriptions (which may be edited). Or just by their very refined artificial intelligence.

Nice example below (on forumsite only):

I have typed the word "citroen" in the searchbox and within a second they found 44 pictures within more then 44.000. Just 4 because I had used that word in my descriptions, just 1 because the word was seen in the picture, but 29 by pure artificial intelligence and 11 completely wrong and just 1 because of real citron-slices.

It is up to you to find a better example, but if you never have typed any descriptions, it would an impossible job doing that for thousands of individual images. And that has no sense for another reason: these despcriptions are not stored as formal captions in the files, so they get lost when such pictures are downloaded.

Sorry, but I can't add more.

PS: if you are on Windows-10 it maybe wise to upload a small photofolder to OneDrive, because then you can add real captions and keywords. And the dates are shown in the thumbnails.

That's interesting and good to know about formal keywords. I was thinking more of informal ones, the whatever generic words AI uses to identify pictures when returning results. I've generally had pretty good experience finding photos (without words in them) using the search, and I've never used descriptions.

Just this: jpg-files has two fields in their metadata-header. One for general descriptions (captions or titles) and one for keywords (labels or tags).

On phone you have no chance to get these fields filled before they get uploaded to Google Photos, but on computer you can do that in the Windows Filemanager before uploading to Google Photos. But Google will neglect the keywords completely and only sees the description.

Like many, you never have used descriptions, so you are dependant on Google-AI completely and that is not bad but never complete. So at the end it always are you own eyes which will find that special photo between thousands :-)

PS: to my large experience it often are photos of some beloved person that one wants to find and on the site you have no possibility to switch-on facerecognition and grouping - that only can be done in the settings of the Google Photos app on phones. But then you will see these faces on site also on the Search-page. Just try, but you should have a lot of patience until that collection is completed.
