How to see the hidden album which is hidden from library

Only shared albums can be hidden in the Albums tab. To unhide you must find the album in the Sharing tab, tap the 3-dots > Show in albums. 
It can be a challenge to find a shared album in the Sharing tab. In the web app you get a link to the album in the info field of every photo that is in the album.

In order to clean up my collection of photos, it would be great if Google could identify images with…

In order to clean up my collection of photos, it would be great if Google could identify images with the same scene but in different quality(file-size), and keep only one -the largest! I have copies of photos on different (backup-)devices,  resized photos etc.. I want to clean it all up and have one "master" in Google Photos.

Is it possible - online you can browse for identical images across the internet...

Many thousands have asked for a kind of duplicate detection (or even removal), but there is not such a tool in Google Photos. See more info here:  How to prevent/remove duplicates

But this is about identical scenes on different storage devices and not about "look-alikes" on Google Photos. So you only can decide yourself which quality should be stored at Google and to my idea you should leave the best quality on disc (large files) and the smallest size at Google. 

Usually my edited pictures are downsized to 2048px long side by Picasa and uploaded without further compression to Google Photos and taking there much less space then full size images compressed to storage saver quality. And these picture still have enough resolution for normal FHD-screens and for my super-iPad. 
But my large and unedited originals are on a cheap usb-disc which is replaced every 5 years. 
Just my way of course :-)

sometimes due to a large space to clear the free up space option doesn't respond. You might try deleting it manually and then try using free up space. and even try clearing the cache of the photos app.

If you have uploaded photos on google photos and deleted it please take a look at the below info.
 
 
 
Following is text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos: 
 
Restore photos & videos
If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the bottom, tap Library  Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone’s gallery app
    • In your Google Photos library
    • In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
    Important:
    • If you delete a photo or video that’s backed up in Google Photos, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you delete an item from your Android device without it being backed up, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you see a photo or video in Google Photos that you think you deleted, it might be on a removable memory card. To delete it, use your device’s gallery app.
    Empty your trash

    Don't see the photo or video?
    If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
    • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
    • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
    When you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures. 
     
    The information on the following Google Photos Help pages will help you become more familiar with finding, deleting, and restoring your pictures: 
     
     
    If you deleted pictures or videos that were not previously backed up to your account through the Google Photos app, then unfortunately there's nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this Help Community can do to recover them. 
     
    Files that existed only on your phone, ones that were never uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered or restored by a cloud storage service. Simply put, Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.

    Here are instructions for enabling face grouping. If this doesn't work and you're using VPN due to being in a country where it's not available, it seems like maybe the VPN isn't set up right which isn't something we're able to help with.
