After creating the movie, I hit SAVE.  It jumps back to the Photos view.  I can see the movie was created, but when I click on it, it opens back to the movie editor.  If I share it, no one can view it.  If I try to download it on the phone where it was created, it says "still processing".  It appears to be unable to assemble the movie and complete it.

Probably your phone has no space anymore and then the Google app can't work properly anymore. 
Please check straight at Google via photos.google.com in the Safari-browser and log-in with your Gmail-account if asked. Then you should see all, unless the backup never has worked correctly.

  • When you uploaded from the Google Photos app on your phone or tablet, they will NOT be uploaded to Google Drive, but only to Google Photos.
     
  • To see what is uploaded to Google Photos you should go to https://photos.google.com/. 
    The Google Photos app on mobile devices also shows items that are on the device, but NOT uploaded.

Oh my gosh. This post fixed my issue I've been having for a year. I use an iPhone and no longer had volume on videos in Google Photos. Even when I Chromecast them to TV. Turns out it was the physical volume switch on the phone, which I normally have off 100% of the time because I have an iWatch that alerts me off calls and texts. Don't need volume. Anyway, turn the physical volume switch on and suddenly the videos pay volume on phone and when cast to tv.

I was trying to clear my phone memory so decided to delete items from my device using the option on Google photos, so it keeps it on the app (as all my photos were backed up) but fees up memory on my phone.
However, it kept saying item not backed up? This is impossible as these were all pictures that were previously backed up and saved on my phone, as I have automatic back up and also manually backed up these pictures.
It seems Google unbacked them after June 1st and if I want them back it would go towards my storage.
Can someone please contact me and help, as the ruling clearly stated ANYTHING BACKED UP BEFORE JUNE 1ST IS EXEMPT, and so it's not fair that all my items were unsynced by Google photos and are not saved anymore. It doesn't make sense why this was done, as everything is not backed up anymore, this is not what was promised with the rule change, we were assured anything backed up previously would remain on our accounts.
Please help as I had a lot of memories backed up and don't want to lose them.

Sorry to hear that photos are missing. The first question that comes to my mind is: "where the photos really uploaded"?
 
"It kept saying item not backed up"
  • The Google photos app on mobile devices not only shows items that are backed up to the active account, but also items that are on the device but NOT backed up. The fact that you see them in the Google Photos app does not mean that they are "backed up". 
  • You can check on https://photos.google.com/ which items are really uploaded. The Google Photos web app shows ONLY photos that are uploaded. 
     
  • How did you try to clear your phone memory? What did you do when it said "item not backed up"? Did you delete anyway?

  • I have problems with the use of the word "Backup" by Google: Google Photos is not a real backup. It protects against loss or failure of the device, but not against hacking or user mistakes (the main reason for loss of photos). 
    See Google Photos is NOT a "Backup" of Your Photos
    and Google Photos "Free Up Space" command is scary

Even when your storage is (more than) full, your photos should not be deleted. You will not be able to upload anything anymore, and Gmail becomes blocked due to lack of free storage, but nothing should be removed.

    Yes, my photos were all 100% backed up on my Google photos account. I had the backup option that backs up using WiFi and my cellular data and I would regularly go on Google photos to make sure any recent photos I'd taken that day were definitely backed up.
    The other reason I know they were backed up is usually any photo backed up on Google you can choose to delete it from device storage and it remains on Google photos. However, some photos which I had kept on the device and did not delete with the others now say "item not backed up, are you sure you want to delete permanently?" These are all photos previously backed up.

    Also.. I use Google as a back up, I have a harddrive that has my photos however I also wanted all my photos on Google account (which they all were... Until now, much to my confusion). And the new limit won't cover if I had to back all my photos AGAIN. 

    Anyway with this extra clarification, are you able to help? Because as I said everything was up to date and backed up I made sure of it especially prior to June 1st.. and yet I'm now in this unfortunate situation despite taking all the necessary precautions and doing everything I could have on my end. Feels like the app just wants me to have to pay to back it all up again, which is disappointing given the promise that all things already backed up would not be affected.

    Is there anyone who can kindly help?

    Also.. no I didn't delete anything when that message came up, as I didn't want to lose anything. 

    I was actually pretty shocked at the warning, because usually Google photos would prompt me to delete items from my office storage as they were all already backed up, and yet now apparently nothing is backed up. Despite previously the app saying I could free up over 75GB of data on my phone as all my photos and videos were already backed up on my Google account. So I would only ever delete by going on Google and choosing "delete from device" which then would confirm the items will only be deleted from my phone storage but left on my Google photos account.

    Thanks for the explanations. It looks like you know very well what you are doing (not the case with everyone on the forum). I would like you to confirm :

    Does that mean that you checked in the web app https://photos.google.com/? That's the only place where you can check for sure whether the photos are really uploaded, given you are signed in to the correct account. 
     
    The message "item not backed up, are you sure you want to delete permanently?" contradicts the fact that the photos are uploaded. It's hard to tell what can be the reason.  You can search in these places (in all your Google accounts if you have more than one) for missing photos (this is a standard list I use for missing photos):

    • The web app https://photos.google.com/ shows ONLY photos that are uploaded to the account you are signed in to. 
    • The Google Photos app on mobile devices shows ALSO photos that are in folders on the device but not uploaded. That is in any case DCIM (Camera folder, screenshots), but also folders that are selected to be backed up to the active account. Thus looking at the app on mobile does not tell you that the photos are uploaded.

    Sorry for the wrong information: what I wrote is how it works on my phone. On my (old) tablet there is indeed an "i in a circle" icon at the bottom. Tapping on it shows the info at the right hand side. I expect that, if there is no i icon one of the other methods should work. 
     
    You say that you do not see the info "until I use google photos in split-screen". 
    How do you get the info in one of the screens? A screenshot may help to understand.

    It only works with split screen in which google photos has to be in 1/3 of the screen. This is happening since the last two updates, I think they aren't optimised for tablets.
