I just signed up for a Google One free trial, then it suggests I delete extraneous space of 1.5 GB in Google Photos, then it shows me the list of pictures/videos where half of them are duplicated! I've never seen this before in Google Photos. They're not duplicated on my phone as far as I can see, though I'm using Galaxy S10, which I've seen some weird behavior with the Google Photos app and the Samsung Gallery app. Are they clashing with each other and causing Google to misread my photos as duplicates?!

I'm leaving a screenshot paste below, though I don't know if you'll be able to see the inline picture:

--- looks like the inline-pasted picture doesn't show :/ --- very disappointing, Google.

Here's an imgur copy of the picture:

https://imgur.com/3uejf3d

If you look at the file names and dates and file sizes, you'll notice not only are they duplicate images, but exact same file names and sizes, but dates months apart! It's like Google Photos uploaded many of the same photos months apart as if they were different!

I already got a 50% storage warning weeks ago... but now it appears this is why!

What am I supposed to do about this?! It's gonna take me forever to delete the duplicates. Many are recent photos too, like last several weeks and months included. I know Drive's been buggy with uploads, but I never expected this from Photos. This is a MAJOR problem. They're not duplicated in the phone app.

Answer:

@David
If you have no other app running then the Google Photos app on your phone, you are doing something strange because the dates indicates are not the real dates of the photos. For instance: a filename like 20210701_xxxxxx indicates that the photo was shooted on July 1, but the dates shown shown July 22 or 5 days agoo. Can you explain these dates?

PS: in the Samsung Gallery, folders are named "albums" while on the Library-page of the Google Photos "albums" are at Google only (if created by you), while the folders are shown directly under Pictures on device. So apart from the Camera-folder, you may have other folders there which maybe synced or not depending on your settings. And if you have moved pictures from the Camera-album in the Samsung Gallery into another album, these may get re-backupped because you did change something in the files. Hard to guess what.

PS: you easily can insert a screenshot here via the paperclip, but that is shown on the forum site only like shown below for some arbitrary screenshot:

Answer:

Google Photos duplicates reply

@Rinus Alewijnse

I don't know what you're saying; I have the Google Photos app and the Samsung Gallery app (pre-installed) on the Galaxy S10... don't you consider the latter an "other app running than the Google Photos app" on my phone? Or maybe there's a misunderstanding? Do tell if you're aware of the two apps running on the phone causing duplicates in Google Photos, because neither the Google Photos app (on the phone mind you, as the website is not an app) nor the Gallery app show duplicates. So I don't know how to explain where they're coming from.

I realize there's date discrepancies... that's partly what I pointed out in my original post. The discrepancies are obviously coming from Google Photos, because those duplicates with off dates only show on the Google Photos website (check the "one" links below, they're new to me).

I understand the difference between the Google Photos app albums folders and the Samsung Gallery app albums folders; I have noticed that they save in their own locations, which I'll try to define below. I haven't moved photos between Google Photos folders and Samsung Gallery folders... I don't even see how to do that. Also the duplicates aren't files that I've done anything with except maybe tap a few to look at them.

My settings: in the Google Photos app, I have all folders it lets me set to backup except for a few like Downloads and Messages. Those aren't the problem anyway. I never set up anything special in the Samsung Gallery app, and all I can tell in Camera settings is that photos and video are set to store to "external" SD card (which is my preference).

If I connect the phone to my Windows through USB, and turn on transfer, I get a "drive" I've named "My S10" pop up under This PC (in Explorer), and I can tell you this about the phone folders:

  1. S10\\Phone\\DCIM\\Camera is empty.
  2. S10\\Phone\\DCIM\\Screenshots has some screenshots, many recent, though I can't tell if these are ones where I cropped them from original screenshots. No duplicates there.
  3. S10\\Phone\\DCIM\\Video Editor and S10\\Phone\\DCIM\\Videocaptures are empty.
  4. S10\\Phone\\Movies\\Messages has a saved video from a text message from someone. No duplicate there.
  5. S10\\Phone\\Pictures\\Messenger is empty.
For some reason that's it. I apparently can't get to the actual pictures and videos I'm having the problem with through USB, even though I remember being able to do that before. I can't tell unfortunately if that bullet list is only describing the phone folders or the SD card photos, but I'm guessing just the phone photos. I'll take out the SD card and try to list those folders:

  1. D:\\DCIM\\Camera has 2000+ photos and videos up to the present, including .trash files of the same format. There's no duplicate files there.
I'm not finding any other photo/video folders, I only know that I noticed a while ago that Google Photos and Samsung Gallery apps stored their "albums" to different locations.

Note that my SD card is a Samsung 256GB Evo Plus MicroSDHC U3:
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71AS2ApNybS._AC_SL1500_.jpg (sorry Amazon)

I don't think the SD card is any sort of problem. It works.

Note that I'm only seeing the duplicates in the Google Photos desktop website when I go to photos.google.com, then click Settings (gear icon), then Manage Storage, then Clean up Gmail & Drive -> Review Items button - which takes me to https://one.google.com/storage/management - then I scroll down and there's a "Large items" box saying "You can free up to 5.8 GB" in it, with 4 of my pictures showing (2 are duplicate) then a button named "Review and free up 1.5 GB" - which takes me to https://one.google.com/storage/management but with "X Large files" at the top (this is so confusing, thanks Google) and a bunch of pictures to delete, but some are duplicates:

https://imgur.com/x5C82Lr
https://imgur.com/lsEoOWA

PS: I can't just post a screenshot of my photo duplicates here, that's why I blur things out; obviously I already know how to make my own screenshots.

Anyway, I'm off to manually deleting these weird duplicates... which I'm sure will take me hours, days, weeks, or months. This is really disappointing. I notice there's been posts about Google Photos duplicating files going back to 2019, and Google even responded that they fixed it. Well, apparently they didn't.

Answer:

Oh, I notice in Drive Storage - https://drive.google.com/drive/quota - that duplicate files show:

So something is duplicating files, even if it's just Google Photos duplicating them on its servers, or somehow making a copy and uploading it; I imagine this could be happening if the Photos app decides to make a "Large Size" version of the files (as opposed to Original Size), but then I only ever manually tell it to do that if I'm "sharing" a photo through Photos to Drive while on the phone.

You know what, I think what's happening is Google Photos, when I share, and I select "Large Size\

Answer:

Hello David
What a terrible complex story, but you did not talk about "sharing" with Drive before (for what reason?), because that is why you get duplicates in the storagemanagement site - but that are no duplicates - it are (smaller?) copies on a different platform created weeks later for some special purpose.
There is no automatic connection between the Photos app and the Drive-app on your phone, so you only could have done these uploads to Drive manualy. But I do not understand how you got the same mp4-file in original size and in compressed size because I am not asked to select "large" when I share a file to Drive. And you can have "duplicates" on Drive when they are stored in different folders.

For the rest your story is too complex to get analysed, so I am afraid I can't help you and it is very unlikely that some other "expert-volunteer" will jump-in.
Sorry

PS: the albums in the Samsung Gallery are the same as the folders in the Photos-app and the folders on your sd. The albums in the Photos-app are at Google only and probably not used by you at all. That DCIM is empty merely is caused by the fact that you camera-files are stored on sd directly while some folders of social media apps still are stored in Samsung-memory.

PS: I would advise you to delete the two links to imgur which contain an awfull lot of personal pictures - just because this forum is public and there are too many strange people around.

Answer:

You won't investigate my answer to your questions because the answer is too complex? The details I left are from Google... how Android and Google and the S10 works. If you can't understand or address that... then you shouldn't be here. Someone else who can and will understand how Google and Android and the phone stores files and related folders should be here, not people afraid of their natural complexity. Otherwise how could we get issues addressed with these things? Should we hack our phones instead and then complain to Google?

Answer:

Sorry David, this forum is about Google Photos primarily and is run by experienced volunteers only.
But in rare cases we may consult the responsible Google Team via the Community Manager.
And private users may consult that team also when they have a payed subscription to Google One for having more space for Drive+Gmail+Photos.

But then the casus must be clear and verified by our own tests as far as possible in private apps.
However: your casus is completely unclear if you are talking about your phone only because there is no automatic path between the Google Photos app and the Google Drive app - at least not in my personal Gmail-account, but I don't know about professional Workspace-accounts.

So how did you manage to get a photo (a jpg-file usually) or a movie-file (a mp4-file usually) shooted on date A on Google Drive at date B and a smaller copy on date C. And you are the only person in the world which should be able to explain that.
Unless these additional files came from your computer and you have the Backup & Sync app running (recently updated to "Google Drive for desktops"), but you did not talk about that "subway" at all.

That's why I quit and this forum is too busy for the few most active volunteers in their free time - so I can't help that they spend no time on this complex casus.

PS: there has been an (optional) syncing connection from Photos towards Drive until July 2019, but I assume that you are talking about more recent files. And then you should have a Google Photos tab on Drive which is not empty.

Question: My 60 days trash photos with my late husband pls give me back

Trying to get back my last year's deleted photos of my late husband

Hi Sembhi,

Thank you for stopping by the Google Photos Help Forum.

It looks like you're trying to restore some photos from Google Photos. If yes, please check if the photos are present in the Trash of Google Photos and restore them through the below steps:
  • On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  • At the top left, tap Menu.
  • Click on Trash.
  • Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  • At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone.
    • Into the "Photos" section of the app.
    • Into any albums it was in.
But if you've already deleted the photos from the Trash from your Google Photos, there is no other way to restorethem.

That being said, if you would like to see this feature implemented in the future, I recommend leaving feedback about it through the following steps:
  • Open Google Photos.
  • Click on Menu.
  • Select Send feedback.
  • Click on Send.
The product team reviews the feedback regularly and uses it to better improve the product overtime.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,
Emma

I've tried contacting google support without any luck- anyone else have an issue where (fully backed up) photos will suddenly be removed from a created album on google photos?
This happens to me each month, and will randomly occur days to weeks after I create the album. It occurs without me deleting anything.

Answer:

@Celeste
You should check on https://photos.google.com/albums in Safari if your albums still are complete at Google, because the app may mislead you due to whatever abnormal reasons (too less space on phone???).
Come back to report please.

Answer:

But you did not tell that, so that's why I was suggesting the most secure method.

Be cause I have many albums since years and I never have got disappearances, I only can guess that it are shared albums to which others have added photos and that these other have taken away their own photos accidently.
Be aware that deleting photos in the mainstream on the Photos-page also will cause "holes" in your albums because albums contain no copies but just links to your mainstream.

Can not imagine other reasons unless too less free space at Google: see your backupsettings in the app under Manage storage space.

Answer:

No photos were deleted and they are not shared albums. I just keep having to re-add the photos and after doing this 2 or 3 times, it'll finally "stick"- its a hassle, and I guess the mystery still remains

Answer:

A mystery indeed, but you did not tell about your storage stituation at Google. Maybe still enough space in your 15 GB for free, but you also may be over that limit since long.

If okay, my suggestion is this: create a test-abum with 10 pictures only, but on this way only.
  1. Check if you are logged-in with the same account under the small circle as used in your backupsettings.
  2. Start on the Library-page and hit the + at the bottom to start a new album and type Test as its title.
  3. Then choose Select photos and mark 10 random recent photos shooted with your own camera and hit Add top right.
  4. They appear in complete random order in my testalbum, so hit the 3 dots right-up and select Edit album and then hit the small arrow and select newest first and then hit the checkmark left-up.
  5. Repeat this but then select Oldest first and hit checkmark left-up.
  6. Check the album now and then over time - it should not change.
For adding to existing albums, you should follow the same method, but then start with opening the right album before adding to. Always repeat sorting because the pictures added may have random dates (be aware that pictures from social media never have correct dates).
Good luck

PS: although albums may contain up-to 20.000, that amount makes them unusuable. The old limit was 2000 and I still would see this as a limit for comfort.

Answer:

Thanks I can try that- it's just hit or miss because some months it happens, and other times it doesn't (I organize my photos into an album at the end of each month).
Storage is not the issue- I have 100 GB. And I have 600 items at most in the albums.

Answer:

Okay, but "my method" is the best one possible in the app because the selected photos are pressed to get backupped. Even better: in the browser on your laptop, because then you are sure that you are connected to Google directly.
Have a nice weekend.

PS: album take no additional space in your account, but their contents is stored in the database connected to your account.

Lately some of my photos, that are web based (ie not downloaded on my phone) give me the message "unable to edit, check connection," whenever I try to do edits.  This only seems to happen on the older photos that are not on my phone any more.  And only some of them. My connection is fine.  I have cleared cache on the app. I have forced stop the app. It doesn't fix the issue.  Clearing data only fixes the problem temporarily, but causes other issues within the app (ie my labeled people not seeing all the photos that are labeled with a person's name.)

Answer:

Jennifer,

I've experienced this problem many times as well, even though I've definitely got an internet connection. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether the connection is cellular or wi-fi.

One thing I did notice, however, is that if I tap the 3-dot icon in the upper right corner of the screen and choose "Edit In" it will allow me to choose one of the other image-editing apps with no problem.

So, when I get that error message I often just choose to edit the picture in Snapseed instead. I pick Snapseed because it's a Google app, the editing capabilities are much more comprehensive than the basic stuff within Google Photos, and the Snapseed app retains the EXIF metadata (this is a big deal for me).

Other than picking a different editing app like Snapseed, there doesn't seem to be much you can do. I've found that if I attempt to edit that same picture a few hours later, it will often work without a problem. This is strange because it has even worked when I'm still in the same place as before when it gave the error. So, I'm still at a loss as to why this happens, but if you need the picture edited right away you'll have to use a different app from the "Edit In" menu. That, or just wait a few hours and see if it works later.
