Here are the steps that would help you to change the album cover of your Google Photos:

• On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
• Sign in to your Google Account. 
• Open the album.
• Open the photo you want to use.
• At the top right, tap More.
• Click on Use as album cover.

Was there ever an answer to this?  I'm having the same issue.  I actually would prefer if Photos hid away all the nonsense they put above the album section, Places, Things and the like, its putting up images from archives on display, the whole reason to archive the images was for it to stop doing that.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

 

The free up option removes the originals of backed up pics from the phone.

That creates space to capture new photos.

Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

 

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

 

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, that will not restore the local folder structure.

There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone. 

However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

 

That will bring everything to your phone.

Thank you for your reply. However, I do not think you understand my question. 

I logged in my Google photo account in all other devices but still can't find the photos that I backed up on Google after pressing the "free up space on your device". 

Those backed photos are nowhere to find, neither in Google Photos cloud (app or link), nor in my device. I think I would have found the photos on Google Photos on my new device, but I did not. I do not know where they were backed up to. 

In my 13GB backed up photos, only about 800MB photos are left in Google Photos, the rest of the photos are nowhere to find.

If I can't find the photos on my Google Photos, how can I download them or get them back? 

How or where can I find those losted backed up photo?

Please give me a reply as soon as possible, thank you.

However, the Google Photos app never removes any picture through the "Free up space" option unless there is a matching copy on the cloud.

 

Do you have multiple Google accounts?

As I stated in another post here, version >5.46 takes away the ability to edit a photo and replace the original with the edited version. It forces a "SAVE COPY" for all edits.  I recently took 2,000+ photos over a 2-day event and need to go back to another events photos from 2-months ago to make edits to them.  This could be 5,000 photos ago. Trying to find a "saved copy" is maddening since it doesn't put the "copy" into the same album as the original.

I recently had a friend who has a Pixel with Android 11 use the latest (5.60) to take a photo and then edit it and it allowed him to SAVE vs SAVE COPY (without forcing deletion of the original).  But I know Samsung phones are a bit different.

The last version I tried was 5.50 and it took most of the day to sideload 5.46 and rebuild the 8GB of cache so I am not going to try this unless I know they fixed the changes.

Can someone with a Samsung (mine is the Note 10+) phone and the latest GPhotos tell me if they can take a photo, upload to GPhotos and then make a few simple edits (I know things like the HDR option used to always require SAVE COPY) and SAVE (overwrite local copy)?

I have had issues with editing photos on Google Photos for probably a year now. I get all these green dots appear after pressing Edit and side window showing filters appears. See attached.

This is running an nVidia 1080 Ti with latest drivers, 436.02. I think it's related to graphics driver as during a driver update if i keep the edit web page open it corrects, but the next time i edit a photo the same issue occurs.

If you want to delete the videos from Phone, use "Free up space". Once you did it, your synced videos will be removed from your phone. Free up space help page for Android and iPhone & iPad
