I am trying to backup original quality images from my phone, but hit some limit prior to reaching 15GB and Photos forced many of my recent uploads down to high quality. I was trying to solve this before letting all the new images upload, but I didn't realize the "upload only when charging" option seems to have been removed, so they uploaded themselves (in reduced quality) as soon as I hit a known wifi. I bought more storage so I could continue uploading my full quality images. However, the new images that were already uploaded in HQ are not being updated to full quality. Photos thinks they are backed up and doesn't seem to let me upload/backup again at original quality (Photos app says they are already synced, and if I send to Photos from my device gallery it appears to upload but nothing changes). If I try to delete the reduced quality images on Photos (to attempt to re-upload) I get a warning that it will delete it off my device as well, so I haven't done that.

First, I don't understand how/why this synced delete aspect of Photos works, that capability and warning scares me greatly as I don't want anything to ever "auto-delete" off my device. I have never deleted anything off Photos (even stuff I don't need backed up there) as I am not sure what it is going to do.
And the real issue is how do I go about getting the new images uploaded in original quality? If Photos thinks they are already backed up and won't let me upload them again, and I can't remove the current ones without it presumably deleting the very picture I am trying to re-upload, I am confused on how to proceed.

Hello B. Craig,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

I checked with a few other people and it looks like you will need to delete all the high quality versions online and re-upload the originals. Be sure to backup the originals on your phone first by moving them to another folder on the phone, to the SD card of the phone (if it has one), or copying to a computer as when you delete the online copy it will delete the local copy as well. Here are options for uploading from a computer (note for options 3 & 4 that we're getting reports of Picasa 3 requiring you to sign in before each attempted upload since Picasweb went away)

I agree there should be a better way to do this- maybe a prompt when you change your setting if you want to replace the previous online copies or not.

  1. Open the Google Photos app on a mobile device or go to photos.google.com using a computer .
  2. At the top left, touch or click the menu icon  > Help & Feedback.

I have shared a single video with the world, i.e. created a share link and distributed it to the party that needed it. They have seen it and now I want to remove the sharing, i.e. delete the link, but keep the video (of course).

How do I do that?

When I disable sharing on the video, this is the popup I get:

Title: Stop sharing and delete?
Message: This hasn't been save to your Albums. If you stop sharing now, you'll delete it permanently. Your photos remain in your library.
Buttons: Cancel / Delete

It seems to me clicking delete will erase the link AND the video for some reason. The video is present in the Album section, so why would it get erased from there? This sharing system is horribly designed.

How do I remove/deactivate the link, while keep the video in my Album?

You can click on Delete button on Stop Sharing page. It wouldn't delete the video/photo from your library.

This was explain in Stop Sharing message(This hasn't been save to your Albums. If you stop sharing now, you'll delete it permanently. Your photos remain in your library) .

If you are the owner of a shared album, you can
  • open the album
  • click 3-dots > Options
  • Turn off "Share"
The album will continue to exist, but the share link is disabled. 
You can also "Delete" the album. The photos/video remains in your library.

As I wrote, I shared a video, not an album. And if I try to stop sharing the video, it says it will delete the video! I don't get it, and unfortunately, your help doesn't seem relevant for my issue. Could this be a bug?

  • When you share in Google Photos (a single video or photo or more) there is always a shared album created in https://photos.google.com/sharing. In fact you share that album with the link to the video. 

  • The only way to stop the sharing is to find that album, click 3-dots > Options and turn off sharing, as explained in my first post. 

  • When you shared by selecting or opening the video, then clicking the "Share" button > "Create link\

    This was much easier to understand, so I went ahead and tried it, but this time on my phone. I used the Opera browser and Google Photos homepage, and to my surprise, the warnings and help text makes way more sense. The GUI of Google Photos homepage is hence much more user friendly. I wonder why the desktop warnings and help text is so much different for the exact same features. 

    Had I used the mobile version of the homepage, I would not have needed to ask for help.

    When opening the shared album on the website https://photos.google.com on a mobile device (in Crrome) there are no 3-dots and thus no option to stop sharing or delete the album. Instead there is a button "Open in app". When doing that the warning was the same as in the web app on a computer:
    Stop sharing and delete?
    This hasn't been saved to your Albums. If you stop sharing now, you'll delete it permanently. Your photos remain in your library.
    This warning appears ONLY when you shared by clicking the Share icon > share by name/email or "Create link".  The warning means:
