I do understand the inconvenience as the profile photo of your Google Photos is not synced with the Google Account. Therefore, I suggest trying these troubleshooting steps in a sequence and see if any help:
- Make sure your device is up-to-date.
- Make sure the App is up-to-date.
- Try restarting the App through the following steps:
- Go to your App Settings.
- Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
- Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.
- Close the background running apps through the following steps:
- Go to your App Settings.
- Display the Active Apps on your device.
- Select the App you wish to close and Force Stop it.
- Repeat this step with all active Apps.
- Try clearing your App cache through the following steps:
- Tap the system Settings tab on the main screen of your device.
- Tap the General section of settings that is on the far right.
- Tap Storage in the General tab.
- Clear the cache data once storage calculates the data.
- Back out of the storage section.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.
There are multiple alternatives to move the photos in the memory of the phone to an SD card. However, moving those through the Google Photos app allows retaining the backup and sync aspect.
Please follow the steps below to achieve the transfer.
- Open Google Photos.
- Tab Library.
- Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device like Camera, Screenshots etc.
- Select photos by long pressing then, tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
- You can also long-press and stroke down while still in a pressed condition to select a batch.
- Next, tap the three-dot menu top right.
- Tap Move to folder.
- Tap New SD folder, type a folder name, then tap Create.
Note that if the photos are already there in Google Photos, this will not remove them from the Photos. Also, even if you do not select the new fold for Backup & sync, any contents thereupon will still be deleted if you delete that using the Google Photos app.

The free up option removes the originals of backed up pics from the phone.
That creates space to capture new photos.
Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.
To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.
There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.
That will bring everything to your phone.

I used to use Android but now I use an iPhone 11. Long time ago, someone must've linked my Google and Apple Photo accounts. Now I have a big problem. All the photos I take are duplicated (or tripled) in Google Photos. If I delete a photo from Apple, it DOES NOT get automatically deleted from Google. However if I delete a photo from Google Photos, it automatically deletes it from Apple. I need to unlink them and nothing I do has worked. It doesn't look like it's set up t h st way on iphone settings. This linkage must have been created by a Google rep over a decade ago before I had an iPhone (but had a mac). It's not only making it impossible to manage my photos, but more importantly it's filled up my Google storage so I can no longer use my Google /Gmail account that I've had forever.

The safest way to delete from Google Photos is to delete the Google Photos app and delete the photos at https://photos.google.com/

You can unarchive your pics through the following steps through the app on your phone.
Open the archives section.
Long press on the first picture you want to unarchive.
Once a blue tick appears, go on selecting further pics.
Once done, tap the three dots & tap unarchive.
That will bring the photos to the mainstream.
The steps remain more or less the same on the web version of the program on desktop.
