There are multiple alternatives to move the photos in the memory of the phone to an SD card. However, moving those through the Google Photos app allows retaining the backup and sync aspect.
Please follow the steps below to achieve the transfer.
  • Open Google Photos.
  • Tab Library.
  • Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device like Camera, Screenshots etc.
  • Select photos by long pressing then, tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
  • You can also long-press and stroke down while still in a pressed condition to select a batch.
  • Next, tap the three-dot menu top right.
  • Tap Move to folder.
  • Tap New SD folder, type a folder name, then tap Create.
Note that if the photos are already there in Google Photos, this will not remove them from the Photos. Also, even if you do not select the new fold for Backup & sync, any contents thereupon will still be deleted if you delete that using the Google Photos app.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.
Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in the following article on how to avoid duplicate photos & how to remove those.

When you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

You should not try anything, but if you view the Photos-page of the Google Photos app and you move two fingers together on the screen until you see your pictures groupes per day (or per month), you should them in the correct order, unless many of them come from social media like Whatsapp, because these never have correct dates. 
Also scanned pictures never have correct dates, only your own phonecamera-shots .
Also wise to close all apps and restart your phone regurarly in order to have a clean start.

Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried. 

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.
 
If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos. 
 
3. Review other options
  • if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos. 
  • have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
  • there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself. 
  • you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
  • If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

The date listed in the Info section of Google Photos for each picture is the "date taken" or "date created" in the image file's metadata. The camera inserts the date into the file at the moment the picture is taken.
 
However, if the file is manipulated or copied afterward then the date may be replaced. Many image editing programs will create a copy of the original image and strip out the metadata, resulting in a new "creation" date. Or, if the picture is sent via SMS or some other messaging app, all metadata is stripped and the image compressed to make sending it faster. So, that version of the picture will also have an incorrect date. 
 
You can change the date that's displayed for pictures and videos in Google Photos by opening the Info panel and selecting it. This can only be done from a desktop or laptop computer at this time. 
 
Per to the official Google Photos Help page about editing your pictures: 
 
Change date & time stamps
 
You can change the date and time stamps for photos and videos using a computer. When you change the date and time of your photo, the edited date and time will appear in Google Photos. But if you share it to other apps or download it, it may show the original date and time saved by your camera.

Addition
Back to the basic mistake: you should not right click on the photo, but choose Download under the 3 dots and then you can select between the original or the edited version which is showed. But at a multiple selection you only can download all and then you get the edited versions on computer (after unzipping).

Answer:

A single downloaded photo lands as a jpg-file in the Downloads folder on a pc, while the Photos-app is set for the viewing the main Pictures folder. So you have to move the downloaded file from the Download folder into the Pictures folder using the Windows filemanager (Explorer) as usual. 
 
Multiple downloaded photos land as a Photos.zip file in the Downloads folder which has to be unzipped using the Windows filemanager to get a normal folder Photos with a couple of jpg-files (then the zip can be deleted). And these files have to be moved to the Pictures folder again. 
 
An additional problem can be caused if your wife has chosen a weird camera-setting for producing dng or heic files instead of normal jpg-files, but that is a bit unlikely.

PS: it takes some time before the Windows Photos app has discovered the new files - it is fairly uncomfortable software compaired to good old Picasa.

The Photos app behaves like any other gallery app, with the additional capability of uploading to, downloading from, and displaying images in your Google account. Deleting a picture using the Google Photos app will delete it from your account and from your phone, the same as if you deleted it using your phone's stock gallery app.
 
When you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app, a warning message appears telling you what will happen if you proceed. On your phone, that message usually says, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?" That message is confirming that you want to delete the picture from your account and from your phone. 
 
Separately, if you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover those pictures.

Google Photos needs access to you photos just like any photo editing or storage app. Google Photos does NOT automatically share photos unless you set-up something like Partner Sharing or a Shared Album.   
 
In general, you can see the things you shared at:
But don't be confused, some of those things might be items which were shared with you.
 
Since you are apparently a new iOS user of Google Photos, I will mention that Google Photos and ~iCloud Photo Library~ use different approaches to data management and it not recommended to use  them simultaneously.
 
It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).
