To see that the Google Photos app saves your photos automatically, activate the backup & sync option. Also allow the app to use mobile data & that too in the background.

Today when I opened Google Photos, it suddenly says 75k photos to be backed up? What should I do? Did Google Photos delete my backup, and how should I check? I've cleared the cache too if it helps.

Google Photos won't delete your backed-up photos itself. Don't worry.

Not sure of the huge count, have you accidentally turned on backup for your social media apps' media folders or something? 

Open Google Photos App > Settings > Backup & Sync > Back up device folders.

Turn off backup for unwanted folders listed there.

 

Also, you can always open photos.google.com to check if your backed-up photos are available there.

I have noticed that it happens with certain faces. The example attached is meant to be a face group of Tom (a white man) but as you can see from the screenshot, the feature has included faces with completely different skin tones and bone structures. As I scroll down his group, results widely vary with faces that aren't consistent with the preset I'd initially established for his face. This is just one example.

To unhide a person that you hid before, please follow these steps.

• Tap the search icon at the bottom .
• Tap view all to see the thumbnails of all the persons in people & pets.
• Tap the three dots at the top right corner 
• Tap on the menu "Hide & show". Please note this menu works like a toggle. If you tap once, the hidden faces become visible. If you tap a second time, then all hidden persons hide again.
• Now you will see all the hidden persons with a symbol of eye & a slash across that. 
• Tap on the eye once. Please note, the eye icon also acts as a toggle. Tap once, the person will be unhidden. Tap a second tome & then the eye will reappear hiding the person once again.
• Once the eye symbol is gone, the thumbnail of the person will become visible again.

The safest way to delete from Google Photos is to delete the Google Photos app and delete the photos at https://photos.google.com/

The camera roll will not be affected and Google Photos can be reinstalled after deleting the photos. 
 

Backup should be left switched off otherwise it will re-upload the contents of the camera roll.
