When the quantum of photos to awaiting the free up action is too large & also the phone has very little space, the "free up space" command fails to do anything. 
The app may also crash.
 
To mitigate the problem, please start uploading manually. 
 
Once a sizable space is free, you can use the "Free up space" option without any glitch.

If you're locked out of your Google account, you're going to need to resolve that before you can access Google Photos. I suggest you try raising your issue in the Gmail Help Forum where the community also deals with account related issues and will be better equipped to assist you.

Sorry don't know where to ask and it's kinda of topic but hope someone can assist me, so here goes..

Since doing that I've now realised that I can no longer see the photos that were on my phone in my google photos from my web browser. By unlinking my phone have I now accidentally also removed all contents of the phone linked to my google account? I've checkEd and it said the last sync to my storage from google photo was on the 11th September which is the same day my phone was stolen, which means that all of my photos would have been backed up, I just can't see them because I unlinked? I believe you are trying to remove duplicates.
 
Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.
Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in the following article on how to avoid duplicate photos & how to remove those.

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

I understand and I'll be happy to help. It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos. 

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:

If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue.

Yes, you can remove the blur that's added to pictures taken in Portrait mode with the Pixel camera. 
 
When viewing the picture in the Photos app, tap the edit icon. Below the picture will be squares that say Enhance, Dynamic, B&W, etc. Look below those and you'll see Suggestions, Crop, Tools, Adjust, Filters, etc. 
 
Choose "Tools" and this is where the Blur adjustment is. Tap the option for Blur and move the slider all the way to the left to zero to completely remove the blur. You can also change the focus point of the blur by tapping somewhere on the image, and adjust the depth of the blur. 
 
When you've finished, tap Done and then save the picture as you would normally save your edits.

Google does not handle that correctly: they are uploaded just like the camera folder because it is under DCIM.  
 
You can find info about storage used and files using most storage in different places. It's not clear why there are so many, partially overlapping, but none is complete, and none suggests to use "Recover storage" in https://photos.google.com/settings to reduce storage used by photos/videos uploaded with setting "Original". It's recommended to look at all of them.
