You are talking about the photos in the MyDrive/Google Photos folder, right? Yes, you can delete the photos from Google Drive without affecting the ones in Google Photos. But, I always recommend testing first anyway, just to prove it to yourself.

Also - if you were using High Quality, those photos in Drive are not taking up any space so it doesn't hurt anything to leave them there. You never know when a case may arise where it is worthwhile to have the photo coming from drive - like embedding in a website..

The other day, I decided to change my pic but then decided to change it back. It appears that Gmail archived my pic and when I attempt to restore it, the image resolution is subpar, which wasn't previously an issue.

I have tried to figure out a way to improve the image resolution but can't establish how to do it. The pic is 95 × 95 2.5 KB and looks really shoddy when it is enlarged; is there a way to recover the original photo?

@Annie: Luckily, there is a simple solution. Please follow these steps:

On your browser, open Albums view in your own Google Photos account.
Select the plus sign above Create Albums in the upper-right of your screen.
Type the name of your Album (say "Family Vacation") over and to replace Add a Title.
Select the plus sign next to Select Photos
Check-mark-to-select a couple of random photos (which can be removed later).
In right of screen, select Done.
Now in upper-right of screen, under the Share icon (triangle with nodes) the following notice should appear: "Almost Done, Invite Family and Friends;" click on the Share icon (whether or not the notice appears).
Type or select from the list that appears the email addresses associated with the Google Accounts of the family members with whom you'd like to share the album.
Type a Message into dialog box if you wish (such as "Here's the Album for our Vacation").
Be sure that the lock icon to the right of the Message is unlocked (indicating that others can add photos to the Album).
Select the blue Send arrow to the right of the lock icon.

Now your family members will receive an invitation to access and add to your shared Album; they can then add photos and videos from your vacation to that Album and they will be visible there to all of you.
