We can do nothing to solve this bug - please report straight to Google via the feedback-option under your profile.

PS: the cause can be some weird app installed recently - do you remember that you had no problems before. Or switching to dark background (bad idea). Close all apps and restart the phone and try again.

The Photos app is taking up way too much space on my phone. The app itself is only 139MB, but the total amount of storage used is 1.04GB. Here is how it's displayed on my phone:

Cache 492KB

I can clear the cache, but that doesn't help. It still takes up over 1GB of space.

How can I reduce the amount of storage the app is using? It should not need 1+GB of space.

Hi Mon Kiii,

First of you should check the Trash; any photos that were previously backed up and deleted less than 60 days ago will be in there.

Once you delete them from the trash they are permanently deleted; they are only recoverable in 60 days if they are still in the trash.

You could try using a third party photo recovery app at this point to try to recover some of what was lost from your phone - just type photo recovery into the play store and see what options are available.

Most of the time the Google-app is hindered by general settings because the app must have permission to work in background and not slowed down some battery saving setting.

Be aware that you can see your backup at photos.google.com in Safari only.

Google Photos refuses duplicates, so it must be look-alikes caused by yourself or by wrong technical actions.

But the app shows what you have on phone primarily, so you need to switch-off the automatic backup and then open photos.google.com in the Chrome-app and then check individual pictures with the infopanel open and then decide which one can be deleted.

No faster options available.

PS: burst-shots are shown as a single picture, but when opened you can choose the best one and discard the rest.

@Rachel: if you are not missing anything on https://photos.google.com, then they should be shown in the app also - even if they are not present on your phone anymore.

So look under its 3 small lines if you are logged-in with the correct account also used for viewing the website. If that's is kokay, the app needs to be resetted: remove your account from the app, close the app, restart the phone, restart the app when having good wifi for at least an hour and then log-in again.

Then the app will get filled again slowly from the web.
