Recently, I downloaded a meme from imgur, as some of you may do, and since then, Photos would keep crashing when I open it. I looked up the issue and found that it may be caused by a corrupt photo. And it was. So I went into my file manager and deleted it. Problem solved, I thought. I was wrong. The photo is not on my device or in my online backups, but it shows up about a second before photos crashes. Has anyone else had this "phantom image" problem, and how do you fix it? I tried clearing the cache, uninstalling updates, rebooting, and even disabling it and re-enabling it, to no avail. I am getting really ticked. Please help if you can.

Meanwhile, give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
- Check your internet connection (mobile data).
- Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
- Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
- Clear App data:
- Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
- Touch Apps.
- Select Google Photos in the list.
- Touch Clear data.
- Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
- Visit the Google Play Store.
- Open Google Photos.
- Touch on Update.

If you step through the options at you will see help articles.
If you do not see any helpful suggestions keep clicking Next and you will eventually reach a contact page <see screenshot online> where you have a choice of contacts who should be able to help.

Back up and sync is a storage service that automatically saves your photos and videos to your Google Account. These photos and videos will be accessible from any device where you are logged into your account.
Steps to turn back up and sync on or off:
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app.
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- At the top right, tap your account profile photo or initial.
- Select Photos settings
Back up & sync.
- Tap "Back up & sync" on or off.
