I upload all videos in original size. For example, there's a 400 MB video uploaded, but when I shared it with my colleague he could only download it as 12 MB, all the while I could still download it at full-resolution.

When I tried to download it from a different browser where I wasn't logged in it also got downloaded as 12 MB. 

This is such a shame, because I assumed that anyone could download high-quality videos from my shared photos, not just me, and I spent a lot of time uploading original quality videos to share them with colleagues.

You can't use Googe Photos like Wetransfer which is pure filetransfer and that is the best solution for sharing with people who are not interested in Google Photos at all and don't need to add this video (and much more photos) to their own library like in a family-situation. 

Even when uploaded at original quality, it takes at least a couple of hours (or even a day) before that video can be played full screen with full resolution on your own Google Photos site. Then it can be shared and the receiver should be logged in with his/her Gmail-account to be able to view the video at the same resolution and then it can be downloaded in its original quality also. 

But I am testing this special situation now, so I may come back with another conclusion. 
Have some patience please.

Thank you for the answer! We run a dance studio and we need to share videos after dance practices. The video I tried to send was uploaded on 13th of August, so it's not a new video. And the person was definitely logged into their Google account, I even later shared it directly to their email.

We also have a shared folder with colleagues where everyone uploads their videos / photos for our social media. We were under the impression that those were uploaded in original quality also, but not sure anymore. Would you suggest switching to Google Drive?

Thanks for more info Julia - that shows the importance of good quality for the shared people. 
 
In meantime I have had time enough to agree with your finding and it does not make any difference if the file is shared to another user of Google Photos or as link to a user without a Gmail-account because the viewers are not pressed to log-in. 
But I found a less severe compression of filesize of about 4x. However: if you shoot short 4K movies, you probably get double compression: from 4K to 2K and then also in filesize - else I can't explain the extreme difference bewteen 400 MB original and 12 MB download. 
 
I am not sure if this is normal Google behavior on Photos - but because it always takes too much time to find-out and to get a bug resolved, it seems a good approach to use Google Drive instead and that also can give more privacy because you can share with users who need to log-in for viewing and downloading. Then the downloaded file always will have your original quality, but I am not sure yet in the Google Drive site or app can play with enough quality. 
 
Don't think I can do much more for you now, so test yourself.

PS: be aware that 400 MB on Drive take 400 MB space in your account, so you may need to pay for moving your storage limit from 15 to 100 GB or more very soon - see one.google.com/storage
 
PS: also at Drive it can takes hours before a video can be played at full quality, but it can be downloaded in full size almost immediately. My first impression is: much better then Photos.

Moving to Google Drive could be an option, we should explore that, but it would be a lot of hassle adding and giving access to all the different collaborators, with Photos it is much easier.

And we have plenty of storage, I think 2TB :)

You can make a folder on Drive which can be shared with many and then you only need to add a new video to that folder. So that is 1x sharing for some period. The same can be done on Photos with an album. 
2 TB is the max at Google and okay and the same videos don't need to be on Google eternally.

I have been uploading all my Mac Photo Library photos by using Googles sync and back up tool. Now I wanted to check out the Google Photos App on my iPhone and iPad and i noticed that it is trying to pull my 90 GB worth of images and videos from the iCloud to upload them again on Google Photos even though those have aleady been uploaded from the Mac. 

However the biggest issue is that i do not even have that amount of space to have them all pulled from the iCloud by Google onto my iDevices. 

Any suggestion?

Hello Manu,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library again, the scan will take some time, but it shouldn't re-upload the photos entirely as duplicates. The app may look like it's doing this but it's actually doing a re-scan of the photos.

Also, it does take approximately 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos.

I have noticed that the photo count in some of my web albums is incorrect. 

For example, I have one album that claims to have 173 photos inside but there are actually only 101. As this issue is affecting web albums, I get the incorrect photo count on both Android and on the web platform so it doesn't seem to be device specific.

I have tried renaming the album in question and turning on/off the share feature in the hope that it would "refresh" the file count but it hasn't been the case.

Does anybody know why the total count becomes out of sync and what can be done to remedy this?

        I've got about 30,000 photos in Google Photos. I had an old library in Photos before uploading these so I cleaned it out, emptied the trash, and got it to 0. Then I uploaded my photos. Now I have a bunch of grey squares in the December 2016 area. It makes December 2016 about 1/3 of my timeline. For reference 916 of my 30,000 photos are from Dec 2016. I have attached photos. The Google Dashboard shows I have 107,361 photos. I have just over 30,000 that I just uploaded. I'm guessing these photos are the grey squares? On get.google.com/albumarchive I have what seems to be thousands of albums with 1 to 2 photos in thumbnail resolution in a Photos from Drive section. I cleaned my Google Drive out so Dashboard was showing no storage usage. Are these albums from the old Drive integration? If I delete these albums my total photo count does go down. But with about 40,000 albums to delete that doesn't seem feasible. Any ideas? I would love to get my timeline cleaned up.

        Chat help was of no help. She just told me they are grey squares because the photos haven't finished loading? Sometimes the squares do go away. My timeline stays messed up and just scrolls through the December 2016 portion very quickly compared to the rest.

        I wish there was a way to just nuke all Photo data and start over.

        Apart from the irritating grey squares: Google Dashboard numbers are useless, but in your case it is not clear how you did the new upload and from what type of computer. 
        Asumming you are on Mac and you have used the Backup & Sync app, you may well have overseen this important setting: 


        But if you accidentily have included that metadata, then that rubbish may well explain the grey squares because the day-albums in the autobackup on https://get.google.com/albumarchive for that period may just contain old remains as very small thumbnails (smaller then 256x256 pixels) which can't be shown on https://photos.google.com as normal pictures. 

        Then you also maybe able to find folders with abnormal contents on https://drive.google.com/drive/computers

        Please let us know if I am thinking in the right way, else it becomes very mysterious.

        Forgot to say: the optional Google Photos folder on Drive is not updated anymore and can be deleted. 
        But if normally used, that special took no storage either. So it is unclear which other folders your mean.

        • It is a known issue that grey squares do appear for a while after having deleted many (or all) photos. See for example https://support.google.com/photos/thread/5051772. I am afraid that there is not much to add to what is said there.

          Dashboard is totally unreliable as far as Google Photos is concerned. It seems to works with the Album Archive. Many photos are counted twice and there are also photos you do not see in Google Photos.

          The link between Drive and Photos has been disabled in July 2019. See this link. Deleting photos in Drive does no longer delete them from Photos. This is also new for me, and I had almost no photos in Drive, thus no experience. What I see:
          • I had one album with photos in Drive before July. I had "Drive" turned on in Photos. That album does still appear under "Photos from Drive" in https://get.google.com/albumarchive 
          • I deleted one of the photos in Drive and it also disappeared from that album in the Album Archive.  

        • "If I delete these albums my total photo count does go down. But with about 40,000 albums to delete that doesn't seem feasible."
          If I understand it well, you still have photos in albums under "Photos from Drive\

          You are spot on with everything you said. I was able to locate thousand of pictures in Drive using search a few days ago. Seems they had lost their folder from a deletion long ago, which I found by searching is a common issue.  I was investigating why it showed I had 12 GB of usage when there was absolutely nothing in my Drive. I erased all those file and got my Drive usage back to 0. I'm assuming the reason these still persist on the archive page are because there is no longer a link between Photos and Drive. I'm still clueless why the Drive albums are separated into thousands and thousands of 1 to 2 photo albums. They were not sorted this way in Drive to begin with. 

          If it helps, I had previously had all my photos in Photos. I switched to another service for a few years and let my Drive storage lapse , so it compressed all my photos. About two weeks ago I deleted all those photos and started the reupload process. To answer another posters question I used my iPad to do the upload.

          Please be a bit more clear about the past. 
          Uploading to Google Photos in original size setting in the app can easily lead to 12 GB (including Gmail), but without having anything on Drive. Your 15 GB free is divided over Drive / Gmail / Photos. 

          PS: that archive only is relevant for Google Take-out. But if all was removed from Photos, these day-albums under the Autobackup cover should be empty too and not contain tiny thumbnails: please open one and look to the infopanel how large they really are.

          The 12 GB was orphaned files in Drive. They are what caused my Drive storage to show 12gb when it appeared empty. I'm not sure this has anything to do with the archive issue. Just a guess is that those files are what generated all those Photos from Drive albums. 

          I do have gobs of empty albums scattered all over in the auto upload folder on archive. They are not concentrated in any one date range. They are spread all over. Not sure if those are the cause of my grey squares, even though they are all in the Dec 2016 range.

          • If you had "show photos from Drive" turned on in Google Photos there was an album in Album Archive called "Photos from Drive". It should still be there if you did not delete everything, but no new photos or albums will be added. 

          • "We all have empty albums in the auto upload folder on archive. They are most probably not the cause of your grey squares,  but in your case the result from deleting all photos". Google should remove them automatically, but they do no harm. I just ignore them.

          They do cause some harm. Ive got a third of my timeline filled with grey squares. It's also causes the rest of my timeline to be very compressed because a full third of my timeline is just for December 2016.

          Why did you have uploaded so many pictures in the December 2016 range - were they all wrong dated perhaps?

          Just a sick dream that may work on https://photos.google.com
          1. Select the last normal picture just before the greys (click left-up on the V in the thumbnail). 

          2. Scroll down until you see the first normal pictures below the greys. 

          3. Press and hold the Shift-key and select that picture also. 

          4. Perhaps all greys become blue then also (hopefully). 

          5. Click the Trash icon right-up. 

          6. Greys are gone (hopefully). 

          7. Open the trash under the 3 small lines. 

          8. Select both normal pictures and click the Recover-icon right-up to get them back in the clean library. 

          9. Leave the greys in trash: they will get removed over 60 days automatically, but then you have the time to check if nothing else has gone. 
          To be more safe, you also can download the two normals to your computer before. 
          The trick may not work if the selection contains more then 500 items - then you may try to do the same in the Google Photos app on your phone.
