The map is very much there.
I suggest you clear the cached & stored data of the app & try once again.
Nevertheless, if your photos do not contain any geolocation data, there wouldn't be any map.

Could you please confirm if you've deleted the photos permanently from the trash section of Google Photos? If so, then unfortunately, there isn't any way to recover them. 

If you have not deleted the photos permanently, you can always view and recover them from the trash section of Google Photos. If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
2. At the top left, tap Menu   Trash .
3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
• In your phone
• Into the "Photos" section of the app.
• Into any albums it was in.

You may want to check out this Help Center article for more information on restoring deleted photos in Google Photos.

Hi there! I have got a question. Ik have about 100 GB of pictures on my new laptop.  It are pictures from 2001 till 2017. After 2017 I only made a backup of my pictures in Google Photo's. In my Google Photo's I have my pictures from 2001 till now, nearly 15 GB. This includes also the period of 2001 till 2017. When the quantum of photos awaiting the free up action is too large & also the phone has very little space, the "free up space" command fails to do anything. 

Also, the app may crash.

 

To mitigate the problem, please start deleting manually. 

To do so, tap to open the photo. If you find an option "Delete from device" below the pic, tap that.

 

Once a sizable space is free, you can try using the "Free up space" option again.

 

However, before deleting any picture, it's always prudent to copy those on some external HDD. That eliminates the chance of any accidental loss of the media from the phone or cloud.
