After years of usage, I decided Google Photos is no longer suitable for my needs so I deleted the app from my iPhone.  That was two days ago.  But when I went to the web version of Google Photos today and I was surprised to see that new photos taken in the last two days (on the iPhone) were still being uploaded; how was this even possible?   Does Google Photos have access to my iCloud??

Answer:

It sounds like you might have iCloud syncing via a different iPhone or iPad or Mac

If not, try deleting the Google Drive app if installed. The Drive app can upload photos but it is normally a manual operation unless there are different settings on iOS

Answer:

Thank you very much for your reply.  If I log on to Google Photos from my home computer, I can see all of the info of the newest photos are recorded (time, file name, type of device used (iPhone) and uploaded from iOS device).  I have no idea how Google Photos even has access to iCloud, this is actually frightening.  None of the photos are in the Google Drive (web version or app), so it doesn't seem like photos were being uploaded to Google Photos via Google Drive automatically ...

Answer:

Did you try deleting the Google Drive app, you wouldn't see any photos in Drive or the app.

Also check the iPhone model number matches photos uploaded from before the time you uninstalled Google Photos.

Answer:

Thank you for your reply.  I didn't want to delete Google Drive on the iPhone but did more tests and see if new photos would get uploaded.  Interestingly, two days after deleting the Google Photos App from the iPhone, new photos are now no longer being uploaded to Google Photos (cloud) anymore!  I have no idea how this worked!  I supposed it might need to wait for a day or two for something to sync?  Thank you for your help, Mr. Peter!

I have recently done a factory reset on samsung S10 5G following a glitchy samsung software update. My google photos are all there. I can view them, click on them, share them etc. At the top, of the app, the recent highlights and annual highlights (1 year, 2 year etc) take ages to appear and when I click to view, the whole screen goes black and the images fail to appear. Also, when google photos notifies me of a suggested filter, that too goes black and i cant view.
I have to close the app down and start again.

It works fine on my S8.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I need to markup photos all the time and hoping that it would be included in GP since it was released, but resigned to downloading photos and editing them in IrfanView for decades.

GPhotos Markup was finally added, but it is completely broken.... it appears to work, but when a copy of the marked up image is saved, it completely fractures and is unusable...

Does google even know that this is happening?  I have "reported it" using "feedback" but my experience with that option is that it is a black hole.

Question: After freeing up space all photos got deleted from gallery i want them back

I want all photos back in my gallery

Hi, Hamza Mukhtar 9848

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

The free up option removes the originals of backed up pics from the phone.
That creates space to capture new photos.
Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.
There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

That will bring everything to your phone.

Still, for more information, I suggest you visit this link.

Question: Free up space not working. Begins and glitches, shutting down.

Free up space begins then shuts down without removing any photos from device.

Hi, Sabrina Laffan

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, can you specify how much is the amount of space to be freed?
Also, how much is the free space on the phone?

Answer:

Hi, Sabrina Laffan

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

When the quantum of photos to awaiting the free up action is too large & also the phone has very little space, the "free up space" command fails to do anything.
The app may also crash.

To mitigate the problem, please start deleting manually.
To do so, tap to open the photo. If you find an option "Delete from device" below the pic, tap that.

Once a sizable space is free, you can use the "Free up space" option without any glitch.

However, before deleting any picture, it's always prudent to copy those on some external HDD. That eliminates the chance of any accidental loss of the media from the phone or cloud.

Question: Google Takeout not exporting all files

I'm trying to use Google Takeout to export all my photos for offsite storage. I'm doing individual Takeout zip files for each year which seems to work. However for one year (2020) the Takeout doesn't contain all of the files from that year. I've tried multiple times and it only exports maybe 10% of the files. Now I am concerned that the other Takeout zip files for other years may have missed some photos. Thanks.

Answer:

These yearalbums in the overview are artificial collections based on the serious exposure data in your files, but if the majority are files without any dating, I don't know where they are organisized.
Would that be an explanation.
Hard to test for us and no Google here (that would not help either).
So the best thing you can do is creating a normal 2020 album straight on the website and then you can download that album as a zip to your computer without the json garbage.
Come back to report please.

PS: files downloaded from social apps like Whatsapp are completely undated, but on photos.google.com they are shown at the dates they were recieved and downloaded to your phone.

Answer:

Thanks for the suggestion. Is there an easy way to select all photos from a particular year? I can find them by date but then I have to manually select photos for an entire year which is slow and time consuming.

Would also like an explanation for why it's not working for that one particular year. I had the same phone from 2019 to present and it seems to work fine. All photos should have the correct metadata with date, time, etc.

Answer:

On photos.google.com you can select the last picture of 2020 and then scroll down, press & hold the Shift-key and then select the first picture of 2020 and then click the + and select Album > New album and name it 2020.
Maybe you need to restrict your selection in groups of 500 at max.
Good luck & good night

Answer:

Goodmorning
I already had a normal 2020-album and I have compaired its download straight from my Chromebrowser with the download of Photos from 2020 in Take-out and after removing all json-files and some redundant pictures which I collect in a separate album, I came to almost the same number of files of about 1600.

So no clear indication that Take-out is hiding files, but you may have got in troubles with choosing a too small zip-size for your amounts. I always choose the maximum (50GB) while in reality I only get one zip of less then 10 GB.

But you may have a large number of heic files from some iPhone which are not seen by your (old?) computer, unless you already had installed a free heic-codec from the Windows Store.

I am curious about your findings.
Have a good day.

Answer:

Hi, I created an album with all of my 2020 images. The majority of them are taken with my phone but some were heic files that were shared with me (which I saved). There's about 1500 files total. The original takeout contained only about 150 files (not including the .json files). Like I said, the majority of files were taken from my own phone.

What is odd is that my 2021 takeout contains roughly 1600 images which seems about right. Same goes with other years. It just seems to be 2020 where I'm having problems. I have been choosing the maximum zip file size (50 gb) but it didn't really seem to make a difference. I will post my results with the latest takeout attempt. Thanks for your help.

Answer:

Okay John - but you can't go on with repeating Take-outs because then you are blocked.

I did forget to mention that, but pictures shared with you are not included in "Photos from XXXX", unless they all were saved in your own library long agoo.
It is impossible for us (just private volonteers) to check if Google has made large mistakes after their reorganisation, because originally they had no "Photos from XXXX", but endless amounts of day-folders which made the Take-out download-method very ugly for many years before 2021.

Choosing a large zip-size prevents that the download is splitted-up in several sub-zips which may cause problems at unzipping and file-counts.

I do think you better can stop - you have a good download from 2020 now and it makes not much sense to send a bug feedback straight to Google because you never will get a helpfull reply.
As far as I am aware, you are the first person here which reports this mysterious mistake.
Best

Answer:

Thanks I was able to obtain a backup of my 2020 photos using your suggestion of creating an album for this. This method allowed me to download approx. 1700 photos vs the roughly 150 photos previously.

However I don't understand what you meant about repeating take-outs and being blocked. You mean we're only allowed to do a certain number of take-outs?

Answer:

Good to hear John.
That simply means that it also is wise to start creating an album for 2021 - I am doing that since years.
Best

PS: I only know that Google can block repeated Take-outs for some period for safety, just because it is abnormal to repeat so often.

I have 6.5G of pictures under a Google account I wish to abandon. I now have a Pixel 5a 5g with a new Google account name where I would prefer to hold all my photos in one place. When making the transfer from my old Pixel phone to the new Pixel, only a portion of my photos were transferred, I do not know why all of them were not. I have gone through the painstaking(hours) 'Google Takeout' method of saving my photos to a flash drive. I do not want to store the photos on my phone due to the size of the file. I would like to be able to view all photos under my new account as if they were there all the time. If I were to 'share' my photos between my two accounts, are the shared photos placed on my phone or, can they added to the Google server with the other photos? On my old account, I open the Google Photos app and see ll my pictures, on the new account, I open the Google Photos app and see only a portion of those photos. Thanks

Answer:

Hi, mark v alessandri

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

You can choose between these two options.
Activate partner sharing between the two accounts. Then, you can see the pics from one account through other without occupying space on the cloud.
Or transfer the pics from one account to the other through the steps below

However, I suggest going through the following article to know about the different methods one can use to transfer pics from one account to other.

The article offers several tips on how to do so
However, method C would serve the right purpose.

Answer:

Thanks. It appears that option C is the way to go. I am trying to understand Google terms such as Library. Is that Google 'space'? IF the moved photos from the old account are shared with the new account and ALL photos are visible when I open the Google Photo app under my new account, then my question as been answered. Also, deleting all the photos under my old account will not affect any that were shared with the new account. Thanks

So far, I have tried to change account , reboot my phone, toggle the backup and restore tab!!

PS- there is no change in my google accounts space! It has occupied the same amount of space as before !

Answer:

Check at photos.google.com in the Chrome-app to convince yourself that they are safe at Google.
Not clear what you have done with the app, but normally it does not show what you have at Google, but what you have on phone - unless you have deleted a lot in your gallery to make space for new photos.
If the app is logged-in correctly then it will replace the disappeared photos with their copies at Google.
So it is not automatically clear to me what did go wrong or what you did wrong.
