Everyone gets 15 GB for free. If you want more you must buy more storage.

But I think that the colleagues want to say that they have unlimited free storage for Photos because the upload with setting "High Quality". Photos uploaded before June 1, 2021 with that setting on your device do not count for storage. If uploaded after that date they will count.

You can check on https://one.google.com/storage whether storage is used by Drive, Gmail or Photos
On https://one.google.com/storage/management you can see which files use most storage in Photos, Drive and Gmail.

Storage used by Google Photos can be recovered:

By deleting files in Google Photos, but there are many complaints that it takes very long before the storage is recovered, if ever. Not recommended.
The folder "Google Photos" in Google Drive starts using storage when the corresponding photos in Google Photos are deleted. Thus when you delete from Photos you may also have to delete the Google Photos folder in https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive if you have one.
By using "Recover storage" on https://photos.google.com/settings. That will convert ALL (it's all or nothing) photos/videos to the free "High Quality". Save the ones you want to keep in original size somewhere else before you use this option.

Photos uploaded using Backup and sync on a computer may use storage in the computer section of Drive when they do not make it to Google Photos as "High Quality", for example unsupported RAW files.

Google Photos has in principle Duplicate prevention. That means that the same photo will not upload twice. But as soon as anything changes to the photo (image edited or metadata changed - file name is unimportant) a new upload is possible.

We cannot tell you why you get duplicates. It depends on the whole workflow. Do you also see duplicates in https://photos.google.com/? If you see them only on the Android device you may see the cloud copy and a modified copy on the device.

You just discovered one big flaw of Google Photos: it ignores the folders on your phone or computer. You will have to add them manually to albums in Google Photos. The good news is however that you do not have to select them in the "Photos" tab, but you can:

Go to the device folder in the Google Photos app (Library > Photos on device)
Select the photos you want to add to an album, or all photos in the folder (they will not upload again if already uploaded). To select press the first one till selected, then swipe over the rest.
Tap + and now be careful:
- When you tap Album it immediately adds them to a new album. That is different from the web app where it asks you whether you want a new or existing album.
- To add them to an existing album: scroll down and tap the album you want. Be careful not to tap another album accidentally.

Hi Neal,

Unfortunately Google Photos does not have the granular control to do what you are asking. All photos are backed up to one place online at https://photos.google.com/ in one flat presentation in chronological order and is called the library. This includes digital photos uploaded and mobile photos backed up.

Albums are basically online collections of shortcuts pointing to the library copy which can also be seen on any device you use. All albums are visible on all devices and if you have an empty device no photos are physically downloaded to that device. What is downloaded is a thumbnail of each photo so you can see them on the device. These thumbnails form part of the app Data and are downloaded for every photo in the account. Thumbnails are a few kb each so do not take up a significant amount of space.

There is no two way sync of photos, just the download of thumbnails for all photos.

Before I can add anything else it would help if I knew why you want these smaller albums only on your device.

The reason I want to have a subset on my mobile and a much larger set on GP online

is simply that I have hundreds of 3-4 MB photos taken over the years with a camera that

I would like to have organized on GP online, in albums, for easy access, but not use up all the storage

on my mobile. Of those in each album (related set -- eg a trip or party), I would keep a few on

my mobile itself to use if I did not happen to have an internet connection.

The entire 3-4MB photo in the GP online library with thmbnails on my mobile will be a reasonable

solution for a while, though the size of the thumbnails is at least 100KB, and often a lot more, so

that will have its limits.

For now, I will use the mobile GP app "album view" and "delete from this device" option to

reduce the size of the stack on my mobile.

Posting to highlight an issue which has been present in the Google Photos app for some time, which I haven't seen reported elsewhere.

When playing a locally-stored slow-motion video using the Google Photos app on Android, the transition from normal speed to slow motion results in multiple skipped frames. This makes the transition appear extremely jerky.

To reproduce the problem:

- Film something in slow motion, which is in constant motion.

- Play the file back on the device which recorded it, using the Photos app.

- Move the sliders for slow motion playback so that the transition from normal to slow motion occurs at a point where there's some visible movement

Once playing in slow-motion, the footage looks fine (and the transition to normal speed also looks good).

It's not an issue with the files themselves, as they play back correctly on PC (and the jerky section always occurs at the transition between normal playback and slow motion, regardless of where you drag the sliders).

I've tested on a couple of devices and it occurs on both my Pixel 4a 5G, and my Nokia 8.

Anyone else noticed this?

Google photos should occupy zero space for the activities up to 31st May if you have chosen to save the pics in High-Quality format.

Follow those, but while doing so please ensure that you are not losing some critical data.

However, this link will show only the quantum of Original Quality photos & offer an option to delete those.

Sorry to hear about your accidentally deleting the images from your trash. Double check your trash by going to Photos > Left menu > Trash and see if any images remain. If the trash was indeed emptied, or the images deleted after aging, then they cannot be recovered via Google Photos.

If the images were originally takein and stored on your phone, and you had backup and synced turned on, it is likely there were removed from the phone's local storage as well. However, you can try a third-party image data recovery application for phones. Research, download, and install the applicaiton on your compter. Then launch the data recovery application. Connect your phone to your computer via USB and follow the application's instructions. It will attempt to recover data from the local storage on your phone, but not the cloud backup.

PS - In the future, IF you need to get rid of images from your main photo stream view, you can try the Archive function in Photos. This is a good resting place for images you don't want to see, without the risk of losing them by deleting them from trash. Select an image, then go to the : menu in the upper right and choose Archive. This will hide from the main view, but images can still be found in Search or in the left menu Archive section.

Open the folder and if the back up & sync option is on (dot will be blue), select it to toggle it to the left (it will turn gray / off).

If WhatsApp is downloading images, you may need to repeat the above steps, but look for a folder called Downloads, for example, to see if the images are there. Then you can decide if you want to turn on or off the back up settins for that folder.

Any images currently backed up to Google Photos will still be visible in the main photos stream app, however, so you can determine if you want to save or delete them.

PS - There may be settings in your WhatsApp app that you can use to prevent images from automatically downloading, if that is the case. Check that app, too, and see if there are additional settings that will improve your experience.
