Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried. 

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. L
 
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.
 
If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos. 
 
3. Review other options
  • if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos. 
  • have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
  • there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself. 
  • you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
  • If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

Perhaps this helps: open the album, go to edit album and hit the up and down arrows to select the wanted sorting order again. Else no explainable cause, unless some trial to drag photos in some personal order which only should be done it the album is finished.

The "just play around with it" idea worked - I tried removing the video from the album it resolved the problem. Adding it back in caused the problem again. I sent the video to my husband and he was able to add it to the album with no issue. Very odd!

Google Photos has no hidden folders unless you got one recently if you have a recent Pixel-phone.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

However, regretfully, your query is not related to some feature in the Google Photos app.
 
Did you make some changes through the Settings -> Chats -> Media visibility in WhatsApp recently?
Nevertheless, WhatsApp hides the media folder from visibility to other apps, usually.
But, you will find directions on how to unhide that on WhatsApp FAQ pages.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some difference in file format or metadata.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in this article on how to avoid duplicates in the first place & how to remove the ones which are already there.

I have a dream. When i'm rolling down my thousands of photos, i get to my number 536 photo. I then think, ohh I need to add this to my Holiday-Album. 
Now I have to go back, find my album, click it, then click add photos, then scroll through all my photos untill i find it again, and then add it.
I have a dream that you make much more managing tools, like adding pictures to a specific album.
You could also make it possible to move a picture to another Album.
I'm ofc very happy that you have this storage to keep my photos in the first place, however it feels like you forgot the past 10 years of experience from what have already been discovered as been a good idea, and then started from scratch again. I spend too much time managing my photos using google photos, i feel like my day is running away from me.

Hi John

Stop dreaming.  It's a reality.

  1. Scroll down to an image, for example #536, and long press on the image so that a blue check mark appears in the corner
  2. You can keep scrolling and long-pressing on an image to add a tick mark and select multiple images.
  3. Once you've selected all the images you want to add, select the + icon at the top
  4. Scroll down the list of albums to the existing album you want to add the images to.
Voila!  You've done it.

Ok, the second part, more of a fugue, without the psychological complications,
  1. Open Photos
  2. Select Albums from the bottom icons
  3. Select the Album you want to move FROM
  4. Select the image(s) (again, use the long press to add tick-mark) you want to move
  5. Select the + icon from the top and select the album you want to move the image TO
  6. The image will be added to the other album
You can then double check the other album to make sure it was added, then if desired, remove the other image.  I know it's not a strict MOVE function, but a close-enough.

You can make a feature request via the left menu feedback option in Google Photos to request the team add a MOVE function so they can track interest. Although from a user interface, Albums are more like Labels in Gmails, where you can apply multiple labels to one email. That is you are not moving one email to an actual folder. In the same way, Albums are like labels for images.  So to make a MOVE function, would imply you are moving files, which isn't how Photos works, and would communicate the wrong thing to users.  However, I can see it would be useful, as in the above example, it would save you one click. (That is, you have to remove image from the one album after you've added to a second album.)

My dream is that when I select photos and click the + button, the album I want to add them to is actually there on the list.  Sometimes it is, but often it's not, and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it.  Actually, my dream is that when I click the +, I can just start typing text and it shows me any albums whose names have that text in them.  Then I could actually add my photos to existing albums.

Is that going to happen?
And in the meantime, what to do when the album I want just plain is not on the list?

I've just started using Google Photos and am trying to get the hang of how to move new uploads to their proper albums. I album out everything (even if it's a MISC album)- it mirrors the folders on my PC Pictures directory. I know how to select a single or multiple photos and how to bring up a window that shows my Albums, but I have over 260 of them, and the listing isn't in any particular order and it's harder than heck to find the Album I want to move to. What I'm finding in GP is that in general it misses the mark of having the ability to sort not only Albums, but photos as well. And the People/Pets option of assigning names to faces is an absolutely horrendous journey into an abyss- I'm starting to think someone at Google is actually getting paid to create more clicks in the process. Any help would be appreciated!

Sometimes you need to think the other way around. 

First open the album you want to start in and just look to its date-range under its title. 
Then close that album and open the album for your "copies". 
Then hit the icon with the small + right-up and select the date-range at the right margin. 
And then you simply can select the pictures you want to add and press Ready.

The mobile Photos-app has an alphabetic album sorting option since a few months. 
Maybe that is not possible on the web ever. 
But Google is ugly good in stiff upperlips, so we all have to wait until next Christmas again.

The point is about the sort (or random) order of Albums when you are trying to select a place to add some photos. Has anybody discovered a way to sort or search albums AFTER photos have been selected?

I have the same problem: once you have hunderds of albums it is hard to find the album you want the photo to add to. Once a photo is selected they should allow you to search for an album by title or anything. Now you can only scroll, scroll, scroll,...
I don't see why they don't provide more organisational features. I love Google photos but organisation becomes such a chore that if I find another solution I will move. 
I have a huge archive of photos and scanned old family photos.

I am both using Google Photos (Photos) to syncronize all my pictures and videos and Google Files Manager (Files) on my Android phone.

In google photos on my phone I selected
  • Upload Size: high quality - free unlimited storage
  • Backup device folders: all of them (whatsapp videos, whatsapp photos, screenshots)

I synchronised all my files and do the "Free up space" regularly until I get "Can't free up space" because everything has been backed up already. So according to Google Photos all my videos and photos are backed-up and out of my device.

However then I will use Google Files and it would tell me that 
  • "Whatsapp media" is taking 4.64GB and suggest me to "Select and free up 4.64GB"
  • "Whatsapp Videos" is taking 1.12GB and suggest me to "Select and free up 1.12GB"

I don't understand how Whatsapp media (only photos and videos) are taking internal storage if they are synchronised in Google Photos?  Why is Google Files suggesting me to free up space when Google Photos is telling me that everything is synchronised.

Also I tried once just to delete 1GB of videos that I selected with Google Files and then when I tried to open it on my phone via Google Photos it would try to load and then say something like "Fail. Unable to open". So now I am scared that I lost my videos forever and I am not sure I want to do the same with the remaining 4.64GB

Could you advise I really don't understand why Google photos would say something and Google Files would say something else?

Does Google Photos has a maximum space for videos and photos? Are "videos" not included in the "free unlimited storage". I would really like to understand.

My phone is G5s Plus (XT1805) , Android version 8.1.0 

I can provide screenshots but didn't want to include one with my photos and videos :)
