Question: How do I control what photo s are uoloaded
I want to control what photos are uploaded. Not all photos need to be backed up
Hi, Adam Birchfield
Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.
Once we include any folder to backup, the app doesn't differentiate & backs up everything.
To prevent some pics from getting back up, switch off the backup and sync.
Next, move the unwanted pics to a new folder & do not include that in the backup.
Switch on backup & sync & once complete, switch that off again.

You will have to keep on repeating these steps from time to time.

I have been using Google photos on a Lenovo Android phone for years. I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy A7 tablet and now when I take pictures on my phone they don't show up anywhere! I do not plan to use my tablet for taking pictures at all so don't care if Google photos does not sync my telephone photos to my tablet. The problem is I can't find photos taken on my phone at all now! I did take one test photo on my A7 tablet and it showed up on both my tablet and my phone but photos taken with my phone show up nowhere.
Answer:
@Carolyn
Weird and not logical if you have used the same Gmail-account on your Samsung as used for years on your Lenovo-phone what should have been done. Then you would have no problems.
Else it is hard to understand.
Please check in the Chrome-browser if you still can view your old photos on photos.google.com when you log-in with your old account.
And then come back here to report.
Answer:
I left my tablet off yesterday and took a few pictures on my phone and they showed up in Google photos immediately just as always. I turned on my Samsung Galaxy tablet and the pictures I took yesterday with the phone were there too..but not the crazy missing photos ! Then took a picture with tablet and picture showed up on phone and tablet. Apparently they are syncing now, not sure why that started but do these have to sync or is there a way to turn it off so that the photos will just appear on my phone? I see no reason why I have to have them taking up space on both devices. I have always used just my phone as my camera and prior tablet had Google photos but did not have any of my phone's photos on it. Thank you
Answer:
@Carolyn
Maybe this is just due to misunderstanding.
If the Photos-app on the tablet is set to the same account as on the phone, you just see the phone pictures, but they are not downloaded into the tablet - so they take no additonal space. Then the app on the tablet just is used as a viewer.
If the backup on the tablet is set to the same account, the pictures shooted with the tablet will take space, but they also can be viewed on the phone without taking additional space there.
The space used in your account on Google depends of the quality selection in the backup: if on high quality the space used will get counted for new shoots after June 1.
PS: the missing iPhone pictures on your tablet maybe caused because it are abnormal life-images which can't be shown by Google unless a special setting was used. Hard to explain for me.
Answer:
Hi Carolyn Hopkins,
I think it may be that you did not log in to your Google Photos or did not enable Backup & sync on Google Photos to cause the backed up Google Photos not showing up. Of course, if the data and cache in your application accumulate too much, it may also cause the photos are not displayed, you can check these points: log in to your account again and clear the cache and data of the app.

The wrong person is tagged under People. Usually there is an edit (pencil) option to the right side where you can select and change wrongly tagged people. However for some videos, this edit option is absent.
I don't know why you can edit people for some videos but not others. Haven't identified a pattern or reason why.

So far I have tried to move the photos into custom folders (highlighted in blue) from my archive and from the already created (by Google photos) folder called camera. (Highlighted in yellow). The pictures I want to move are buried in the Photos tab (highlighted in green) which don't show up in my camera folder for some reason. Is it the fact that they have been being uploaded to the cloud? (Second image highlight)

Answer:
@Laundry
The backup process does not change anything in your folders: it just copies the content of the folders selected - the camerafolder primarily. You may have deleted pictures in your gallery which already were backupped before. That's why you don't see them in the camerafolder, but you can get them back there by downloading a selected picture in the Photos tab.
The archive in Google Photos just is a part of cloud hided from direct viewing - it is no physical device folder.
So it is fully up to you which pictures you want to move from the camerafolder to some folder you have created yourself, but in fact that is a rather oldmodish way of organising which will not survive your current phone. You better can create webalbums in the cloud which also can be viewed via Chromecast and on your computer in your private website at photos.google.com and shared with family & friends.

Question: Unable to upload attachments in G Mail
Tried to see in settings the reason
@goutam
It is unclear which Gmail you are talking about: in the Mail-app on your Windows-computer or in the browser on your computer or the Gmail-app on your phone.
And that makes it difficult to answer - so please be more clear about your doings.
Answer:
@goutam
Thanks for fast reply - you should have added the keyword "Android" to your question :-)
The normal way is starting by selecting a few pictures (no movies) in the Google Photos app (up to about 5 at max) and then tap the Share-icon (lying V) and then tap the M at the bottom.
Then you will get a fresh message with these pictures attached correctly.
Good luck
PS: in Gmail you can send up to 25 MB, but that amount may cause troubles for the receiver. Normally the app warns if you have selected more then 10 MB and comes with a proposal to send a downsized version. But then the pictures loose some quality and also their data and that can be uncomfortable for the receiver(s). But for people who just look for a second, that does not matter :-)

Hi, Arin Parikh
Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.
To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery, either, you can download photos one by one. Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, the local folder structure can not be restored.
To do so, there is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be effective to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/;
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.
That will bring everything to your phone.
Still, for more information, I suggest you visit this link https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/google-photos-1/how-to-transfer-google-photos-back-to-your-camera

Answer:
I was very disappointed with my photo book as well. I uploaded hi res images from a professional photoshoot, and they looked beautiful on screen. The images printed in the book looked much lower quality. The black and white images in particular printed too dark and look like they came off my home printer. I expected better from Google Photos and am frustrated and surprised they don't use full color printing for these projects. I am especially upset because this was intended as a gift.
Answer:
I will not accept this photo book. It is a present and I can't give it to my granddaughter. Could I redo it please. I made one book and it looks good but this one with a family on cover is a dark, distorted mess.

Question: google photos
i have deleted my photos from google trash i want to recover them
Hello There,
If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
Trash
.
- Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
- At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
- In your phone’s gallery app
- In your Google Photos library
- In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
Don't see the photo or video?If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
- You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
- You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
To find and recover photos easily, turn on back up & sync.
You may also try to get professional help, but sorry to say Google cannot do anything about it.
Tip: You can try using some data recovery apps from the play store. it might work.

I'm using Google Photos to share "screen grabs" from a video color program. They are simple Jpeg photos that I am trying to share in an Album with the Production team. Something about the metadata coming out of this software is making "Photos" think they are 360 when they aren't. It warps and distorts them and wants me to pan around in them. They are just regular photos. How do I toggle OFF the 360 function? Is there Metadata that I can change in order to have them NOT be seen as 360s?

Hi, Elizabeth Popma

I guess, you want to move the photos from the phone memory to the SD card.
To move the pictures to the SD card using the Google Photos app, please follow these steps.
- Tap on the Library view.
- Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device.
- Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection. You can also long-press and slide down while still in pressed condition to select a range of pictures.
- Tap the 3 dot menu top right
- Tap Move to folder
- Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create
Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos.
Further, even if you do not select this new SD folder for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if deleted using the Google Photos app.

Probably you are pressing the shutter a bit too long and then you get so-called burst-shoots which are presented as one picture. If you open that picture, you can select the best one to keep.
I need to do a tiny test now for further advice, so have some patience with me.
PS: no Google here - just private volonteers.
Answer:
@Tracey
I did check on my old iPad and when I hold the shutter for one second, I already got 15 shoots in fast succession. And I can't find any setting in the camera-app to prevent this happening, but hopefully there is one on your iPhone (there should be one, like on my Samsung).
Then I see this in the Google Photos app (screenshots shown on community site only):

I can drag the tiny thumbnails to the left or to the right to find the best shot and then I hit the icon in the middle and choose "Hold this one only" top left. Then you will be asked to delete the rest as shown in the right panel. This should be done for every burst you have made and there is a tiny marking in the pictures top right to show that it is a burst.
So (if I am right), you need to learn to touch the shutter very shortly without moving the phone.
But there can be other reasons that you get "duplicates\

Hello everyone!
I have the following issue:
I had a set of high-quality (not original) photos in Google Photos, then I got a need for additional space, so I have downloaded these photos as an .zip archive and deleted them from Google Photos (and from the Bin).
Later I decided to upload them back to Google Photos, but it seems that Google Photos tries to reduce the quality of photo again (no matter it was done earlier by Google Photos when all these photos were uploaded originally).
My question is about avoiding that. I was wondering if there is a way to upload these already "high-quality by Google" photos without reducing the quality again.
Answer:
Hi,
I guess you must not have the original sized photos stored somewhere, to upload the originals?
If you upload the already resized photos using original quality, does that work?
Answer:
When you download, delete, and upload again Photos sees them as new photos, thus compresses again. This should not be detrimental for the quality though. Of course it would be better if you still had the originals locally.
Answer:
Hello Onion Zwiebel,
I don't have originals, I have only the photos that Google Photos already resized/converted. But I have them downloaded in a .zip-archive and deleted from the Google Photos (and even from the bin).
I tried to upload them again, but I see that Google Photos tries to reconvert them again: pixel-wise it's still the same photo, but the size is smaller.
Hi janvb,
it seems I made a mistake when I deleted them from the bin. Well, sad to know that there is no way to recover them or upload without reconverting again. :(
Lesson learned.

Hi everyone!
So I've got some progress and just wanted to share it with you and maybe with someone who might face the same issue in the future:
My outcomes:
1. It's impossible to recover the files that were deleted from the bin in Google Photos, but...

Good to hear that Drive was able to recover your photos! I can't think of anything else other than what I already posted. Hope some others will chime in.

Hi,
I guess you must not have the original sized photos stored somewhere, to upload the originals?
If you upload the already resized photos using original quality, does that work?
Answer:
When you download, delete, and upload again Photos sees them as new photos, thus compresses again. This should not be detrimental for the quality though. Of course it would be better if you still had the originals locally.
I do not understand why you deleted them, since "High Quality" pics do not use any space.

1. It's impossible to recover the files that were deleted from the bin in Google Photos, but...
2. It's POSSIBLE to recover the files that were deleted from the bin in Google DRIVE!
So what I did:
I checked if I had had enabled the option to synchronize Google Photos to Google Drive previously. Yes, it was enabled.

I checked if I had had enabled the option to synchronize Google Photos to Google Drive previously. Yes, it was enabled.
So I contacted the support team through the chat explaining my issue and a representative was able to recover all my photos within 10 minutes. All photos went to the folder where they were before, i.e. "Google Photos - 2018 - 04" (since these were the photos I made in April)
Now I have another challenge:
After I got my photos recovered in Google Drive, I wonder how I can move them to Google Photos without losing quality. As you might remember, they were already compressed by Google Photos 1 time, so I don't want to compress them again.
I googled for an appropriate solution, but couldn't find anything relevant, so I appreciate if you could share any thoughts about moving or showing these recovered photos in Google Photos.
Thank you!

@Dmitriy
I think that there is no way to avoid that the photos are compressed again when you upload in "High Quality". Each time a JPEG is saved it is compressed, but compressing twice does not mean that the photos will be noticeably worse. It used to be more an issue long ago when photos had much less pixels.
But I also think that you better keep the downloaded photos locally AND on a local backup, and use Google Photos for sharing and as "Backup of last resort". That is also a much better protection against loss of the photos: having only a single copy is per definition unsafe.
