Recover permanent deleted file

Deleted Photos are stored in Trash for up to 60 days, if you delete Photos again from trash, that's two times deletion.

Unfortunately, once Photos are deleted from trash there is no way to retrieve them back :(

Question: Photo backup

Why do I need backup of photos?

Hello, Peggy.

Good question! Photo backup is important as it saves your photos if anything happens to your phone including lack of storage or permanently deleting photos etc.
These are some benefits when you backup your photos.
  • Never lose a memory: Any photos you take from a device with backup enabled will be saved to your Google Account.
  • Automatic sync: Any edits you make or photos you take will be accessible across any device that you sign in to. If you edit and save a photo on your phone, the photo will look the same on Google Photos.
  • Fast and powerful search: You can search your photos by the people (when you've enabled face grouping), places, and things in them. No tagging is required.
  • Automatic creations: Bring photos to life with automatically created movies, collages, animations, and panoramas.

I have killed the app (force stop), clear cache and data, uninstalled updates, reinstalled updates and nothing has worked. I have a Huawei P30 Pro and I'd read somewhere that certain video files can cause an issue.

Answer:

Sometimes the Google Photos app crashes when opened because it finds a corrupted video or photo when scanning the file system for local media files. Therefore another thing to try is to remove some large media files, for example videos, after copying them to another device or storage media.

Answer:

Hi Paolo,

Something very strange happened. I have renamed the DCIM folder to force android to recreate it and so the native camera app etc can't access my previous photos (at least not from the DCIM or camera folder).

I then opened Photos and initially, didn't experience a crash / kick out of the folder I'm in. Now however, as it has found files again, it is happening once more.

The issue I see is, if the problem are my video files (due to size, length etc), then I won't be able to use Photos as my main photo app anyway, as this is just me recording videos and taking photos on a daily basis. So I'm not doing anything special. I wonder if it's a video file format that Photos doesn't particularly like, so perhaps recording in a lower quality could help.

I will remove the files properly tonight and then get in touch to let you know how it's going. Thanks for the tips so far.

Answer:

Assuming there's a corrupted video that makes Google Photos crash, removing the file should fix the issue. I suggested beginning the check with large videos because they take up many data blocks and hence the odds of data damage are higher.

As you noted, it's also possible that Google Photos doesn't support some video formats. You can check the list of unsupported videos here https://photos.google.com/unsupportedvideos on the Google Photos website.

@Howard

Seems logical, but it is very unhandy -you simply should have gone further with your old number and old account on your new phone.
As for the situation now, you need to check if you still can log-in to photos.google.com with your old account in the Chrome-browser. If so and you do see all old pictures back, your are lucky.
Then you also can add that old account to the Google Photos app via your profile right-up for viewing these old pictures (that will take time to build-up), but you need to decide if you want to backup new pictures to your old or to your new account in the backup-settings.
Good luck

I might have a unique issue here but I am missing some specific photos from Google photos that I have never deleted before from Google photos itself. I have pictures from all the way back when I first got my Gmail account up until today but I am missing two specific events. One was a trip taken in September 2019 and then another from
December 2019. Both of these events are missing and I've never touched anything in Google photos. I have an iPhone. The interesting thing is I had removed some things from my iPhoto which would in turn remove it from my device but everything else I had removed from my iPhoto is still in Google photos except these 2 particular events. Hello Krishnanand,

Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Community.

As you're facing issues while saving the editing photo on your device, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps on your device:

1. Sign out from your Google account and sign in back.
2. Uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos updates. (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > Google Photos app > Uninstall Updates > OK). As long as you have a strong Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), your Play Store app will update to the latest version within a few minutes.
3. Try clearing your app data which is the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. After you clear your data, sign in and turn "back up & sync" on again.Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
a. Tap Apps.
b. Select Photos in the list.
c. Tap Clear data.
4. Restart your device.

Also, could you try performing the above action on a desktop to check if this issue is fixed?

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Sonya

When Settings  are fine in  Android Phone and Photos / Videos are backed up and synced  successfully into Google photos,

When the link open,

Select Account in case of Multiple accounts .
Check in All  Folders,
Or, open Google photos App and check for photos,
Or,
Check Trash folder for deleted photos,
Can be recovered from Trash within 60 days after the deletion,

Still problem persists,
( In Android Phone )
Go to Settings > >> photos>>Clear cache> Clear  Data,
Check Settings in Google photos,
Open Google photos and wait for finishing the process,
If the files are not in Trash,

Created a new Google account for my parents and uploaded all their pictures but Google is not processing or providing results from the algorithm that identifies people, objects, and places. It's been like a month. That is an important feature to me. Frustrated it isn't processing and I have no idea how to fix it. Looked in every nook and cranny to no avail. HALP!

Answer:

@Jeremy

Google has changed the site a bit and you have to view the https://photos.google.com/explore page in order to see some automatic search selections about "places & things" and these will gradually grow in time (that are no albums which can be shared).
But if the majority are old pictures from before 2010 without location information, Google will have a tuff job to recognise that stuff and in these heavy covid times they don't have much "free time" to do so.

However about faces: you need to switch-on face-grouping in the settings of the Google Photos app on your phone logged-in on their account. Even then it will take days and weeks before the first persons can be viewed on https://photos.google.com/explore also.

This is a user forum, so we can't know everything.
But it may help to activate Google by randomly typing words in the search box and see what comes-out. This will give you some idea about the indexing status of the collection of your parents.
And you also can start to create albums about special events yourself - these will be more valuable then any automatics from Google.

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

@Chris: I really appreciate you sharing your inputs.

@Valkon: In addition to what "Chris" suggested, could you please confirm if you want to separate pictures on my computer from being backed up to Google Photos via backup and sync tool? If yes, please uncheck the folders you don't want to backup on backup and sync tool or vice versa.

If that's not the case, could you please elaborate your issue with little more details?

Keep me posted.

Best,
Sonya

Answer:

Hello Chris, Sonya Thanks for your respons.
I keep my pictures chronologically, with folders for every year and month. Besides these folders I have folders which not need to be backupped.  In Backup and Sync I could only choose to backup all 'My pictures' or I could add the seperate <year> folders. I do the latter.
Every now and then there is a picture which I don't want to have in the Cloud. I can not prevent that without removing it to a different folder. Now I have to remove it from the cloud.
Greetings,
Michael

You can prevent uploading photos by not adding them to a folder that is selected for being backed up. But then I prefer to upload manually the photos I want. See this link.

Noted you restored the photos one by one.
Sorry to note that caused a lot of pain to your fingers.

However, there was a better method to do so.
To restore photos in bulk, you should have long pressed on the first photo & ensured that a tick appears on that.
Next slide down the finger while still in the pressed condition to select multiple pics.
If you rest your finger outside the boundary of the app, the screen will keep on scrolling automatically & selecting everything while doing so.
Click the restore option once you have bottomed out.

I Believe, that would help you in future.
I could select 4000 pictures in just two minutes & that too without hurting my finger!

I just got back from vacation and I want to download ALL pictures for June and July.

There used to be a single click radio button in Photos to select all pictures from a specific week or month.
Those options seem to have disappeared from Google Photos' new lame interface.

Therefore I will now go to My Account, and download ALL my data, including the ENTIRE 70 GB that Drive is storing for me, select them in my local hard drive, and of that throw out 65+ GB that Google sends me.

Hey Google, if that's how you want it done, fine. I can afford the download, as long as you upload an unnecessary 65 GB and pay for all that useless processing and the bandwidth - just because you took away the select by week / month / year options!

Answer:

I just checked, I have 150 GB in Drive, which means you will be sending me 150 GB and then I will be discarding 145 GB of that.

Good going Google...

Answer:

There are several ways to download only pictures from June/July 2019
  • Type June 2019 in the search box (and do the same later for July 2019)
  • Select all photos (or the ones you want).
See this link for selecting multiple photos.
  • Click 3-dots > Download
You can also simply select these photos in the library https://photos.google.com. Photos taken the same day can be selected with a single click: hover over the date and click the checkbox that appears.

Answer:

Nope... That does not work, as there is no 'Select All' option once photos have been filtered.

I would have to go click on each the dates in the filtered photos.

That's 30 separate clicks, including waiting for the page to load thousands of thumbnails first.

Answer:

It doesn't even show the next date until all previous thumbnails have loaded... So a whole month (thousands of pics) would take forever by that method.
