You should see the share in the sharing tab as a circle with the account icon and the name to the right. Tap to open and any message should be visible. Tap the right arrow next to the name at the top and choose the option to leave which effectively deletes the share.

If so, the editor leaves the original intact in case of major modifications. You can still find the original in the same chronological order.

I repeat once again. Google Photo never edits a pic irreversibly.
 
Here are three screenshots.
In the first, I did a major modification. Now the app is forcing me to use "Save copy". I can't overwrite the original.
The second attempt was a minor edit. The app allowed me to overwrite but promised to allow reversal of that.
The third screenshot shows the revert option.
 
 

Nevertheless, after making the edits, it might be so you have deleted the original.
Please look for that in the bin.
 
If so, regretfully, there is no way to undo the edits.

No special action is required to upload the photos. Open the Google Photos app & select the right Google account. Next, turn on backup & sync & the app will upload the photos through the camera folder & other folders selected to backup.
 
If the photos continue to remain on your phone also, then you can access those even while offline.
However, if you exercise the "Free up space" option, then you will need internet connectivity to view the pics.

Are you new to Android? 
Or do you have a new phone and don't know how to see the pictures shooted with your old phone? 
Or did you have uploaded to Google from your computer? 

Assuming a new starter: if you start the Googe Photos app, you will just see what you have on phone. 
To get that automatically copied to the cloud, you need to log-in with your (new?) Gmail-account under the small circle right-up and you also need to go to settings there and switch-on backup in high quality to the same account. Do not switch-on using mobile data to prevent costs. 
Then uploading will start and will go on in background while having wifi and doing other things. 

But you will not see that cloud in the app unless you start to create albums on the Library-page (also for sharing). Or look to photos.google.com in the Google Chrome-browser when being logged-in with the same account (that also is possible on your laptop in any browser). 

Private pictures can be hided on the Photos-page by archiving them. 

Of course there is much more to say, but this is your start-up.

PS: did not see the first reply of mr Unknown, but now you have two preaches for free. But I don't agree with free-up space because most people want to have their pictures at hand to be not dependant on having wifi for viewing the cloud only (that's what happened if all locals are deleted). So you have to built-in a discipline to delete the oldest pictures regurarly in the normal Gallery-viewer (or Google Gallery GO).

If you are quick you might beat the rollout, if not then no options for free.
 
However, the Google Photos folder was created when syncing from Photos to Drive so they should still be in Photos?
 
If you mean some folders with photos in them then the best way would be to download them (if not synced) then manually upload one folder at a time to create albums.

Yes, that Google photos folder was created as part of photos sync to Google drive, I did not created it manually. So does it mean that content of Google photos folder is already part of Photos? However, I am fine with that if that is the case as it is of before June 1 rollout.

I just wanted to setup backup and sync to sync all my Google drive contents to my Mac and when I initiate the sync it starts downloading all the images in Google photos folder to my hard drive that I don't want. I just want anything I put in drive should be synced to my Mac. How I can achieve that? Pls suggest.

If you disconnect the sync and delete the Google Photos folder from Google Drive then start again you should be OK
 
Any photos in Google Photos will not be affected.

It's best to do batches than selecting all, 
  1. Open the Photos app
  2. Pinch the screen to show the Month view
  3. Long press the month to select the whole month
  4. Tap Share  and select Save to device
  5. Repeat for other months or select more months at a time

In iOS, when you are looking at a specific image, tap on the 3 dot menu in the upper right corner, that will show the Info Panel with time, date, file info, and description (which you can add).

Probably you have use zero GB  at Google before June 1 because you can have used 4 GB for Gmail + Drive - just check one.google.com/storage 
If so, you always have backupped in high quality instead.  
Or you really have used 4 GB for Photos at original quality, but that backup is by far not complete - check on photos.google.com
Please come back to report, but I hardly can imagine that free-up can clear 15 GB of local memory if these files are not backupped in any quality.

Thanks for the reply.
I originally had my backup quality set to "high quality" for the most of the pictures but about two months ago switched it over to "original quality." From the research I've done it should re-backup everything to original quality (at least that's what I thought), but I don't think it has. Everything that Google Photos is telling me is that everything is backed up. Prior to the June 1st deadline, it was telling me essentially the same thing: that I had 3.8gb safely backed up and that I could free up 14.4gb of space on my phone. Since then I've taken a couple photos/videos just to see if it was backing new stuff up. When I logged into my Google account on a new computer, the new photos/videos were there so I'm assuming it is at least backing something up.

Always tell the truth immediately because about 10 GB on your phone was uploaded far before June 1 in high quality, but used zero GB at Google.
So it only are the 4.4 GB uploaded in original quality that was counted by Google - and thus explaining the 14.4 GB on phone which can be cleaned away. 
Thus you can have free-up running, but you should be aware that Google is too stupid to give you the option to leave 200 recent items undeleted for using in apps which are not able to connect to Google-cloud like most social media. And you also may copy your contents to pc in their original quality before free-up.  
Else you only can download one-by-one back to device without a lot of additional fuss.

Thanks. Good call on making my own backup just to be safe. I don't use social media, so no worries there. I also don't use Gmail or Drive for anything, both are completely empty, so the storage is all photos. Your explanation was the same as my theory but I wanted to be safe because I didn't want to free up space and lose a ton of photos forever. Thanks for the help.

I never closed the site in Chrome in hopes that someone would reply quick (you helped me there). I also got the Gmail notification, but I tend to delete all emails through Gmail right away because it isn't my primary email address.
