Question: Recover deleted photos

I want to recover all my photos pls help

Hello There,

If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. And check the Trash .
  3. Click Restore
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
You may also try to get professional help, but sorry to say Google cannot do anything about it.

If you are not the Original Poster, please DO NOT add you problem/issue to this thread as it will NOT get you an answer. Please create your own thread , in the proper Product Forum, concerning your problem/issue.ThisThis will enable us to give personalized help concerning your problem.

Now- with that out of the way let's deal with Kulbhushan Goyal's post in  Google Photos.
Please note that, due to a variety of reasons, not all files can be recovered - but you can try!

1. Items deleted from your photos.google.com are stored in trash for 60 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.

3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.

4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

5. Items manually deleted from Gmail trash can not be recovered.

6. Items deleted from your Google Drive  will be stored in Drive Trash for 30 days and then be Auto-Deleted from Trash and can not be recovered.

1).If you are using a regular personal account
You will have to contact a Google Drive Specialist who *MAY* be able to restore it. Use this link:

2). If you use a work/student account (G Suite), you should contact your Account Admin as they can restore files up to 25 days after deletion.

On June 3, I selected some of my Google Photos for export to my pc. Google compiled 21 separate products. I received the email with those products and clicked on each one for download. All downloads were saved but I don't know where. The only files in my download folder are two that I clicked on to view them. Everything else is MIA.
Where should I look for the zip files to find what I downloaded?

Answer:

@Jack
You did everything wrong - you should deselect all products and then select Photos only and within Photos you should have selected the yearfolders only - assuming you hardly have albums created yourself.
Then you would have one or more zip-folders in the Download-folder on your computer unless you have chosen to download to Google Drive or OneDrive, but that is a bit unlikely.
After unzipping, you can delete the zips. And you can delete all json-files.
Better luck

Answer:

Thank you for your reply.
So, I guess, if I understand your reply, I was wrong to deselect everything except what I wanted to save for export.
So, now that I've downloaded/saved 21 files I should ignore the list (see atch) and redo the whole thing,  right? BTW - what about videos and other data?

Answer:

@Jack
We talk here about Google Photos only - not about any other Google applications.
So read the information given in Photo resources.
It is impossible for me to check Take-out for Photos in bulk.
In smaller tests I just one or two zip-folders
Sorry.

Answer:

Well, believe it or not, I found the exported files. The all ended-up in a file in my Photos folder and in doing so, they removed everything that was already there.
Is that the way it's supposed to work?

Answer:

@jack
You may have changed the normal download-location towards your main Pictures-folders on your computer, but it never is wise to change standards and that explains that you could not find anything in the normal Downloads-folder.
And then you may run into problems if unpacking the zips results in overwriting your original files on pc. Of course that should not have happened, but is caused by unpredictable personal situations.

Normally you get a folder with picture and moviefiles with the same amount of json-files with superfluous metadata (it are simple textfiles, so their content can be viewed). But normal camerafiles already contain all relevant metadata and social media files contain no metadata at all.
Hard to say more about and goodnight from here.

My sister texted me a photo and I saved it to my Apple photos. I just did a back up through Google Photos hoping it would show up there so I could get prints made at Walmart but the photo will not come through to google photos. This has happened to me multiple times in the past as well. It seems like pictures people send me or even airdrop to me won't show up in my Google Photos back up. I have 2 issues I'm trying to resolve and I am getting very frustrated because I can't seem to find an answer to either issue.

Can anyone tell me why the photos and screenshots I take on my phone go into both my mom's account & my Google Photos account? The other issue I have is when I go into her account to delete said photo(s) it will delete it from my account too? Im so frustrated trying to stop this from continuing to happen.

Keep in mind that I helped (and continue to help) my mom with pretty much everything. I set up all of her accounts, email, Google account, etc. I need to have access to her accounts so I can help her when she runs into a problem or needs help understanding something. I do have her accounts saved in my phone. I can toggle between her account and mine in all Google apps. I have stopped the backup & sync for her account on my phone. We are NOT sharing any photos, links or albums. I have tried to change setting s but nothing has fixed this problem. Thank you all in advance for your help, it's MUCH appreciated!  Christina

Answer:

Hello Christina,

The Google Photos app acts as a portal to view both the Device copy and the Google Photos 'backed up' copy. It does not store any photos.

Each time you choose a different account it will 'see' all the photos on the device, but it does not 'back them up'  You can check which account the photos are backed up to at Photos - Google Photos - Tap here and signing in with each account.

Regards,

Peter

Answer:

Hi Peter, Thank you for the reply.  Just so I make sure I am understanding what you are saying... I may see my photos in my mom's Google Photos account but she cannot see them. The only way she would see them is if I had it set up so my Photos/screenshots were being backed up to her Google photos account. Do I have that right?

Christina

Answer:

Hi Christina,

Yes, that’s right. In Settings;  Backup & sync the Gmail account chosen is the only one which the photos will be uploaded to,

Peter

Answer:

Just for final clarification... when she is on her phone and I am on my phone, she cannot see the photos or screenshots I take on my phone that upload instantly to Google Photos, is that right?  I can go right in after I take a picture/screenshot and see them in my Google photos and also in hers when I log in to her account on my phone. Thanks again for your time. This has helped me so much.

Christina

Answer:

When you log in to your mom's account on your phone you will see all her photos backed up at photos.google.com plus all your photos and screenshots stored on your phone.

When your mom is on her phone, signed in with her account, she cannot see the photos or screenshots you take on your phone.

To allow the app to backup over mobile data please follow these steps.
  • Tap your profile icon
  • Tap photos settings
  • Tap Backup & sync
  • Scroll down & tap mobile data usage
  • Set daily limit as "Unlimited". Choosing this removes a lot of trouble.
  • Tap the slider in front of "Back up whole roaming". That ensures uninterrupted backup even while roaming.
  • Next, through the settings on your phone, allow the Google Photos app to use internet data in the background.

I later took screenshots of the entire conversation of the direct message including the same photo but this time your app gave locations in Switzerland and Mexico, but not WV. I'm trying to divide screen shots from camera file in the Google photos

Answer:

Hi There,

After taking a close look at your screenshot I assume that are you using a XIAOMI Device.

The problem about Xiaomi Device is that, If you explore File Manager (internal storage), you'll a folder called DCIM. And that folder contains various other folders called "Camera, Screenshots, restored etc."

So the screenshot you take lands into the DCIM, which is backed up by Google Photos considering it is a photo taken using the camera app.

I don't know what to do

Hello Crystal,

Head over to https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement  This should give a clue on where the storage is being used. Large photos and videos >5MB are listed and can be reviewed.

Storage may be reduced by going to https://photos.google.com/settings and using the Recover storage option.

If you need to subscribe to Google One you can Create a family group then share the storage between members and it can be used in addition to their own 15GB

Review backup settings on Mobile
  1. Open Google Photos .
  2. At the top right, tap your account profile photo or initial  Photos settings .
  3. Tap Back up & sync.
  4. Check your settings:
    • Back up & sync: Make sure "Back up & sync" is turned on.
Review your upload size to the web
  1. On your computer, open photos.google.com/settings.
  2. Select High quality or Original quality for future uploads.
Review backup settings for the Backup and Sync computer app
  1. On your computer, download and install Backup and Sync.
  2. Sign in to the Google Account that you use for Google Photos.
  3. Select to back up only photos or videos, or all files.
  4. Select any folders you want to back up.

I synced my iCloud photos with Google Photos and then decided that I only want to share select folders in iCloud with Google Photos. If I delete the photos from Google Photos so I can start fresh...will it also delete the photos from iCloud (which I don't want)? Also wondering (once I am synced the way I'd like) if changes I make in those folders on iCloud will sync with Google Photos (deleted or added photos)?

Answer:

Hello Jessi,

Unfortunately you can only sync the Camera roll.  Google Photos does not see the albums as they are software collections in Apple Photos. All or nothing unless you change to manual.

The safest way to delete from Google Photos is to delete the app and go to photos.Google.com to delete the photos and then reinstall the app.

Regards,

Peter

Answer:

I synced my iPhone photos with Google photos…what I'm asking is if I delete all of my photos from Google photos, will it then delete them from my phone as well? In other words, is Google photos continually syncing with what is on my phone and if I delete a photo from Google photos will it then automatically delete it from my phone?

Answer:

Deleting photos using the Google Photos app automatically moves them from your camera roll and they go into the Apple Photos Recently deleted album.

There is no automatic syncing, deleting photos from photos.google.com will prompt for the deletion to be applied to the camera roll copy. This prompt can be rejected or ignored.

Answer:

I do not want to delete the photos on my camera roll that are also synced with iCloud. I just want to delete the duplicate of my photos that is now in Google photos without affecting my iPhone camera roll/synced iCloud photos.

Answer:

Then back to the initial answer.

The safest way to delete from Google Photos is to delete the app and go to photos.Google.com to delete the photos from the Google servers.

Question: Can Partners Search Shared Libraries?

I've shared my Google Photo library with a partner, also a Google account user, and so far no issues…

I've shared my Google Photo library with a partner, also a Google account user, and so far no issues with that person being able to view all of my pictures (I shared all of my photos with no date restriction). When my partner views the shared library on their account, though, they are unable to search my photos for things like location. There's no search bar or option in their shared view, and when they attempt to search for a location that's only in my shared photos from their library nothing shows up.

Can a partner who is viewing a shared library search the shared library without saving all of the photos to their library (which would actually be a pain if they only wanted to save certain locations but couldn't first search by location)? I just shared the library about an hour ago so is this something that they just have to wait to test until the sharing process is complete? I've read on this forum that it can take a few days to complete.

Thanks!

Answer:

"Can a partner who is viewing a shared library search the shared library without saving all of the photos to their library ?"
The short answer is: NO. Only photos in your library are indexed for searching. A work-around is that the partner shares an album with the photos you want.

I signed up to Google One in order to finally move my media to the cloud. Considering all of it was on my PC's hard-drive, I logged into Google Photos and dowloades the backup assistant. After that I selected my Images folder. Backup is happening right now and will take quite a while. Will I have to keep all the media on physical storage afterwards?

Thanks.

Answer:

Hello Marcos,

Once uploaded to Google Photos you can safely delete from the laptop, but that means you only have one copy and no backup. Perhaps a low cost USB drive could be used to store the originals.

Peter

Answer:

Hi Peter,

I'm definitely considering it. Thanks a lot for your time answering my question.
It helped a lot!

Best wishes,

Marcos

An additional reason for keeping the originals (although having a backup is already more than a good reason) is that uploading to Google Photos will ignore the folder structure that you may have on your computer. All photos will be added to the "Photos" tab, sorted by "Date taken" (if available).

Adding all photos to albums from the Photos tab will be very laborious. After the initial upload you can however still add photos directly from a local folder to an album: the photos will be added to the album but will not be added again to the Photos tab.

Answer:

Thanks a lot!

My upload is still happening, considering I have over 50k files.
At least half of them have been uploaded already, and I realized a lot of them were uploaded with different dates to what they were organized in Windows.

I guess I'll go over each one of them adjusting the dates whenever I have some free time.

Question: videos not playing on iphone

I have iOS 10.1 and have recently migrated all my photos and videos to google photos. The photos appear fine, but the videos don't all play. There is just a circle suggesting that it's loading but nothing ever happens. After reading other people's posts I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app on my phone but that did not work.

I can play the videos on my computer when I log into the google photos site.

There are some videos that play in the app on my phone, which seems to correlate to ones that haven't been moved to the deleted folder on my phone. The whole reason I did this was to free up space on my iphone, so why does there have to be a copy of the video on the phone for it to play in the app??

Answer:

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Could you please try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app to see if it helps? Also, make sure it is currently up to date.

If that doesn't help, I recommend trying these troubleshooting steps in a sequence and see if any help:
  • Do a force restart by holding the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logoappears.
  • If the application freezes or is not responding, you can force the app to close by holding the power button until the red slider Slide to Power Off appears. Do not slide the slider. Instead, hold the home button for 5 or 6 seconds, and you should be returned to the home screen.
Lastly, you can try the below mentioned steps if all else fails:
  • Go to Settings.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode.
  • Wait a few seconds, and turn it back off.
  • Tap on the Settings icon.
  • Select the General menu.
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap on Reset.
  • Select Reset Network Settings.
  • The device will take a minute or so to reboot.
Let me know if this helps.

Best,
Emma

Answer:

This has sort of helped, the only thing that made a difference was reset network settings. Now videos mostly play but not as quickly as they did when there was a copy on my phone.

I sometimes have to press play and pause a few times before they will play.

When they are stored on my phone they play instantly. How is it that the google photos app needs to read info from the phone? I thought everything was meant to be on the cloud?

Answer:

Hi Sarah,

Appreciate your response.

Just to let you know, the videos are stored in the cloud but they might take some time to play as it depends how good the internet connection is.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Emma

Back uped photos are missing the photos are deleted while seeing that photos

Hi, Sachin J. N

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Are you saying that when you open a photo to view, that gets deleted automatically? That can't happen. Did you use some different command?

Question: Hello medam/sir,

Hello Sir ,

If you have uploaded photos on google photos and deleted it please take a look at the below info.

Following is text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos:

Restore photos & videos
If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the bottom, tap Library  Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone’s gallery app
    • In your Google Photos library
    • In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
    Important:
    • If you delete a photo or video that’s backed up in Google Photos, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you delete an item from your Android device without it being backed up, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you see a photo or video in Google Photos that you think you deleted, it might be on a removable memory card. To delete it, use your device’s gallery app.
    Empty your trash
If you see a request to "Delete permanently" when you try to move an item to trash, your trash is full. Your trash can hold 1.5GB.

Important: If you empty your trash, you permanently delete any items in your trash.

Don't see the photo or video?
If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
    • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
    • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
When you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

The information on the following Google Photos Help pages will help you become more familiar with finding, deleting, and restoring your pictures:

If you deleted pictures or videos that were not previously backed up to your account through the Google Photos app, then unfortunately there's nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this Help Community can do to recover them.

Files that existed only on your phone, ones that were never uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered or restored by a cloud storage service. Simply put, Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.

    Thanks.

    Answer:

    Like mentioned by Yasin,

Photos that are deleted from the trash are gone permenantly and it cannot be recovered.

You may try reaching out for some professional locally who could recover those photos from your phone storage.

There is nothing Google could do about Permenantly Deleted data.

Question: What happens to files that are not backed up?

I have stored some files that are not backed up

    Hi There,

The files that you don't back up remains in your phone storage.
And the files that are backed up remains on the cloud and you can access them from any device as long as you are logged into your Google account.
