Photos uploaded at the high quality don't count towards your Google account storage, if its uploaded at the original quality it will count towards your Google account storage.

If you want to recover storage:
  • First check on https://one.google.com/storage?  how much storage is used by Photos, Drive or Gmail
  • On https://drive.google.com/drive/quota you can see which files use most storage on Drive
  • There is no way to find the photos that take storage in Google Photos
  • You can convert ALL photos/videos taking storage on Photos to the free High Quality by using "Recover storage" on https://photos.google.com/settings 
  • If you want to keep the photos uploaded in Original you may have to download them all, which is not a bad idea anyway: having photos ONLY on Google Photos (or ONLY on one place in general) is not safe.

Nevertheless, when you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app, a warning appears telling you what will happen if you proceed. On your phone, that message asks, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?"
 
When you attempt to manually empty the trash/bin in Google Photos, another warning appears that explains the consequences of permanently deleting those pictures and videos. 
If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.
 
However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Welcome to the Google Photos forum!
I understand your frustration, because sometimes the automatic system is imperfect.  
In this case, there are two ways: 

1. Download photos on your device, select another app for editing and create the desired collage.  

2. Download photos to the device and change them a little by editing in the device gallery or other apps for editing → save and upload to Photos using the auto-backup settings;  then you will be able to select the pictures you want to create the collage the way you want. 

Unfortunately, there are no other ways, because the automatic system detects not a picture, but a digital file, and the algorithms see that a collage can be made from these files only in this way.


📝 And also you can write to the team your feedback about your problem: open Photos, select menu → Help / feedback → send feedback

The Terms of Use expressly states that in some cases, any content, including abusive or obscene, will not be shown in any Google products and services. 
This means that the automatic recognition system / algorithms will hide such content, including in Photos.  

This is due to the fact that Photos are used in Family Groups, and in accounts for children.
Child protection is a priority for Google, so it is impossible to bypass this censorship: the rules, Terms of Use and Privacy Policy are accepted by default by every user, be it an adult or a child.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery, either, you can download photos one by one. Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.
 
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, the local folder structure can not be restored.
To do so, there is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be effective to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
 
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/;
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.
 
That will bring everything to your phone.

Because originally Hangout was part of Google+  and the pictures were saved under Autobackup and not in a separate folder like now. 
But to my idea you should have downloaded interesting images immediately after receiving these posts.

It looks like an intended behavior of Google Photos where the PNG image with a transparent-background shows up with a white background after downloading it from your Google Photos to the device.

Well... i work in digital Photography over 25 Years, and DO know how to create Images with a transparent BG!
Its useful in many Cases.., but (sometimes) lots of work, when u wanna be PRECISE.

I tried the following:
• Instead of using the G-Photos-App
• i signed in with SAFARI, and
• downloaded the SAME Files 

"W O W
THIS Files did NOT have a white BG... they have the exact TRANSPARENCY that i had CREATED!

Answers, out of this "Experiment":

A: when UPloading transparent PNGs,     
     Google Photos PREVENT THAT!
B: DON'T you worry if your Transparency's 
    GONE or NOT on the GP-Server; it's STILL 
    THERE!

In the End (IMHO) it must be a hidden BUG inside GP's Code! Cause... my "Experiment" DOES PROOF... that the FILES are'nt changed or something else!
Anybody with a similar Prob can replicate my Steps described up there... to "calm down" again. 😎

In full blown panic!  I tried your suggestion, singing into Safari (iPad), to Google.com.  Able to access photos, however after download,  backgrounds remains white.  Unfortunately,  it didn't work for me.  Should the  Google App (s) be deleted, before signing in with Safari,... You can use a third-party app to convert it originally in a transparent format. Just use this tool which they call "Apowersoft Background Eraser". Just try searching the tool on your browser and then download and install it on your PC.

How we could find and delete duplicate. My wife had a Mac and the harddrice crashed, I successfully restored most of her data but when I uploaded the images in Google we have a bunch of duplicate image. On they are not fully duplicate but as iPhoto make smaller image for the gallery style and snapshot face, we end having a bunch of unwanted photo and are unable to identify the original (if it's has been restored) since every file are simply numerical.jpg.
I tried with deduplicator software, they removed a couple but mainly won't recognize the face of someone's as a part of a bigger photo.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some difference in file format or metadata.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in this article on how to avoid duplicates in the first place & how to remove the ones which are already there.
