I was trying to upload pics on social media in order of when they were taken. When I go to select the photos only some are showing up, although I can see them all when not trying to upload them.

Answer:

Hi Kelly,

If you are uploading them straight from within the social media platform then you will usually have to make sure that the photos are on your device to add.

You can share from Google photos to some apps:
  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Select a photo, album, or video.
  3. Tap Share Share.
  4. Under “Share to apps,” select another app to share to. Swipe left to find more apps.

Answer:

I'm seeing this same issue. You can take a photo, and it shows up in Google Photos as the most recent photo. Then, open Instagram/Facebook/Hangouts/whatever, and try to share an image from that app. By default this opens your Android "Photos" folder, which is where images go by default, and where Google Photos looks for them.  For whatever, reason, sometimes the most recently-taken photo or photos do not show up in the gallery from another app.

Yes, you can go to Google Photos and share them from there, but:
a) This did not used to be necessary
b) This doesn't work as desired under many circumstances, because you need to be at a specific page in another app to share an image, which can't be done this way
c) This used to work, and is now randomly intermittent.

I have checked, and yes, the images that are not appearing in other apps are "Saved to Device" according to Google Photos, because they say "Delete From Device" to free up space. Even worse, in some cases I've noticed some photos, usually ones I've just edited, are automatically deleted from the device, and only appear in the cloud. If I click "Save to Device" on those images, a SECOND copy is downloaded and appears in the app instead of it just downloading a local copy.

Something is very broken.

Answer:

I may have figured something out with this...

The 2 most recent photos I took were not edited in Google Photos (or at all). However, there are older photos I have taken that WERE edited in Google photos, and those are showing up first in the image share menu of other apps.  However, I noticed if I scroll far enough, the 2 recent photos DO show up in the image sharing menu of Hangouts, for example, but they're out of order, appearing AFTER the most-recently edited photos.

This seems to be new behavior. It looks like Google Photos is showing timestamps for images in the gallery in order of when they were TAKEN, but might be actually modifying the timestamps on the local copies so they show up in order of most recently MODIFIED/EDITED instead in other apps that look at the local filesystem.

I'm not sure if this is a new Google Photos issue, or an Android general issue, but this behavior is new.

Long story short, the images you're trying to share are probably there, just not in the order you're expecting them to be if you've edited any other photos since you took those.

Question: How do I not share my photos from Google to Facebook?

Don't want all my photos from my phone going to Facebook!

Hi Dennis,

Google Photos doesn't automatically share photos or videos with Facebook or other apps. Only you can decide whether or when to share any media to Facebook or elsewhere.

There are two settings: one in the camera (must be on) and one at Google in the general settings (must be allowed also).
And you may have no gps indoor :-)

These settings are both on but I found another (save location) which was off. I turned it on and this seems to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help. It made me look further.

Some features not working without backup. Why?

Most features don't work without a syncing connection to Google, so with the backup function switched on.
For example: edits only can be saved as a local copy.
Please be more specific if you have problems with that.

I uploaded many videos using Google Backup and Sync, but when I click on several of them, rather than playing the video, I get the message: An error has occurred. Please try again later.

The Issue is Not Related to the Network, Device, or Software Used
This happens on multiple networks (e.g. home and work), multiple platforms (e.g. Windows and iOS) and multiple apps (e.g. Chrome and the Google Photos app).

The Issue is Not Related to a Corrupt Video File
All the files were captured using the same capture card and software, configured the same way, yet some play fine and some will not play. An example of a video file that will not play is https://photos.app.goo.gl/2LV3NbUDK9Mk6fN9A. The videos that uploaded immediately before and after this video both work fine. The videos that are dated immediately before and after this video also work fine. Although the video will not play in Google Photos, if I download it, it will play fine locally.

It's been over 24 hours since the videos uploaded and I am uncertain if I just need to wait longer and the issue will be rectified by Google, or if there is something I need to do. It is important to resolve this quickly, as great efforts have been made to capture and upload all these videos before the storage policy changes coming on June 1st. For this to be a viable platform for lifelong storage of memories, it needs to be reliable and supported.

Thanks!

Answer:

Hi,

I don't know how you can fix it, but there are some suggestions here:

Answer:

Thanks for the suggestion Onion, but I have tried everything in that post. In fact, I have spent several hours searching for a solution on Google Photos Help, Google Support and online in general (e.g. reddit, quora, etc.). Lots of people reporting the problem, but no adequate solution has been identified.

Getting videos working and providing technical support is critical if Google is going to be competitive with other solution for permanently storing memories, such as:
Google is the best at search, but it is only useful if the videos play back. Would love to hear from the Google team.

Answer:

Update: I downloaded a video that would not play (yes, Google Photos allows me to download it, even though it won't play). Then I deleted the video from Google Photos, emptied the trash and re-uploaded the same video I download, and then it played fine on Google Photos.

So, do I need to find all the videos that won't play, download them, delete them from Google Photos, empty the trash and re-upload them all... or will Google Photos eventually make these videos playable without me doing anything?

Anyone have any insight or experience with if these videos will eventually work on their own and how long that may take?

Thanks.

Answer:

I don't think anyone from Google will reply here. So it's best if you delete from Google Photos, empty the trash and re-upload, rather than wait to see what might happen later.

Answer:

That's seemed like the only viable option, so I downloaded, deleted from Google Photos and re-uploaded 56 videos and 22 still would not play. I did those 22 again and 4 still wouldn't play. Then 3, then 2, then 1 and 1 again. Now finally they all seem to be playing. Not sure why it takes multiple uploads for Google Photos to be able to play certain video files.

I thought that Google photos was just a way to backup my photos. I had no idea that Google would comb through all of the photos I've taken in my life and organize them. It is completely creepy to have pictures that I have not seen in 5 years show up as "Google Memories."  It is insane that Google has looked through all of my photos and picked out each one that has each person and analyze their facial features to the point where I can select not to have any pictures with that person shown.  So creepy.

Had no idea that by using this app Google would attempt to organize my memories for me, or force me to look at them.  I would like to remove all of this data from Google servers, but I need to make sure that I preserve the photos and can download them to some other storage method that is not invasive.  I would then like to completely remove all this information I inadvertently gave Google from their databases.

I literally thought that I was just storing my photos on a secure thing like Drive.

Answer:

@Matthew
Don't defend Google (we just are private volonteers), but most people like all these automatic additions for free. So you simply need to switch-off these extraas in the settings under your profile.
That's all.

However: you can't switch off locations and things on the search panel because they help you to find your popular topics very fast if you type some searchword yourself.
And it fully is up to you to create thematic albums for your personal interests and private use mainly.

If you remove your log-in from the app, it becomes a fully passive gallery. But even then you still will have a lot at Google: see photos.google.com
Just for safety as long as you don't have found another backup solution for free :-)

Answer:

Thanks for the tip, I appreciate the thoughtful response. Just an FYI though, as a computer scientist myself, you should consider the volume of data Google is collecting on you and will have available for the rest of your life to do with as it wishes.

I don't know if I want to be necessarily associated in a database with someone I was in the picture with 20 years ago. Who knows what laws will even exist then regarding data and privacy?

Answer:

@Mathew
I use "Google" since they presented the powerfull Picasa Photomanager in 2005 and started with Picasaweb in 2006. And my large collection goes back to 1900 just for the ease of viewing on different devices and for viewing on a large screen TV via Chromecast.
I never have had any clear indication that Google has misused my data for any commercial activities.
And I am not interested in any privacy laws, because I use Google Photos for private viewing mainly and a bit of moderate sharing with our children and grandchildren.
We don't live here in Russia :-)

Answer:

Okay. It doesn't really matter for you. But consider what you were doing in your life when you were 14 years old.  If the internet was around back then you'd be getting judged now on how well you did your paper route.  Your grandchildren are going to be applying for loans, getting hired, and all of this data is going to be available 30 years from now to anybody who wants to search for it.  Unless you take steps to protect your privacy.

Every era has its defining issues.  In the fifties it was nuclear war. In the 60s and '70s it was civil rights. The next big one is going to be privacy.  It's going to be about pictures from high school that show that you are actually gay and who is allowed to access those pictures.  It's going to be about your right to anonymity when using a search engine like Google to decide which doctor you want to treat your cancer. If you think Google won't advertise particular doctors based on your search history you are mistaken.

The data they collect on you is them building a profile that they will use to sell you things and manipulate you for a lifetime. That is why Google is worth so many billions of dollars to advertisers. Google is selling YOU.

Answer:

@Matthew
Google Photos is private basically: please do read their statements about sharing here
And in the app they say: we don't sell your pictures for advertising and we don't use them for targetting advertisements to you.
So it is my own fault if I use part of my pictures on public social media of sites also - but that is not supported from within Google Photos.
It is up to you to leave a lot of convenient features and low cost cloud storage.
Bye

Question: Backup is not working

Backup is not working

Hi, Rohit Bisen

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

There can be multiple reasons for the backup not to happen.

# The quantum of photos to be backed is high.
# WIFI connectivity is intermittent. Too many devices connected to the same router thus restricting the bandwidth.
# Download & upload speeds are too asymmetric.
# Google Photos app is not allowed to use
  • Data in the background
  • Mobile data
  • Mobile data while roaming
# Activation of data saver through the settings.
# Putting a limit on the daily use of mobile data through the settings in the app.
# Putting a limit on the use of total data in a month through the settings in the phone.
# Activating battery saver or super saver mode.

Can you please go through these checks & confirm that these are addressed?

The draw utility in Google Photos is rudimentary.

Nevertheless, to access that, tap to open the photo & then tap edit.
Slide the "Suggestions" row horizontally to reach the option "More" & then tap on that.
On the upper row, you will see an option "Markup". Tap that.
Through that you can use the marker pen with choice of six different colours. Make any freehand sketch using that and then save.

Answer:

Hi,  mohan panwar

Thanks for your reply

Nevertheless, when you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app, a warning appears telling you what will happen if you proceed. On your phone, that message asks, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?"

When you attempt to manually empty the trash/bin in Google Photos, another warning appears that explains the consequences of permanently deleting those pictures and videos.
If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Your contents at Google can't be seen in the app unless you start creating albums. But you always can check photos.google.com in the Safari-browser if you log-in with the same Gmail-account as used in the app.

Question: Allphotos re cover

Ok

Hi, subrata chanda

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Had you backed up the pics to Google Photos?
Are you not finding the deleted pictures there?

If so, did you delete the pics through Google Photos? or using some Gallery app on your phone?
If you have deleted through Google Photos, then you may still find those in the bin.
The Bin icon becomes visible through the library view.

Hello. I have five accounts sharing photos with me as a google photos partner. I can only see TWO of the four partner accounts in my google photos. How do I make it so I can see the photos of each of my partners? The new view should show me all of them? Please help. I'm trying to get things cleaned up before the June 1 changeover. Thank you!

Answer:

@C2G
You are a bit late then :-)
You can have one Google partner only in every account, so that makes it unclear for me what you are doing and if Google allows this for the same owner.
But everything shared is not automatically saved in the library of that account, so if you check one.google.com/storage for every account and they have zero usage for Photos, you are starting with no problem after June 1, because everything stored at high quality before that date, never will get counted in future suddenly.
Nevertheless it would be more wise to restrict to one or two accounts (one personal and one for work) just to make life less complicated and confusing.
But that becomes a different story :-)

Answer:

I also tested deleting and reading the partner with one of the accounts I'm not seeing and I don't get an invite nor do I see the partner in my shared photos list. 😞

Answer:

Rinus: Thank you for your input.

I am aware that each person can only partner share photos with one other person. I have only selected one person as my partner; and, it just so happens that other family members have chosen me as their partner. (I'm the family tech person). I can see 2 of the other family member accounts in my photos as "sharing partners" but not the others. Based on this clearly more than one person can share with you, even if you can only share with one.

This really isn't a question about storage (not sure what you meant when you said I was late, there are a few days left until the 1st). We are all within storage limits and we are happy to buy storage if necessary. It's just that we are all cleaning up our accounts right now and that is when I noticed the issue. I simply want to make sure I can get to all of their photos.  Hopefully, that clarifies my original question.

P.S. I understand your advice regarding simplification, but some of us run multiple businesses, so only having a home and a work account doesn't work for everyone.

Answer:

@C2G
Sorry, it was not clear that you were talking about a family situation and then I can't advise at all, because there is no information about this special situation at partner sharing
But I will ask my other expert-volonteers.

Because there are no problems with storage space, there is no reason for special actions like Recover storage before June 1. So take your time.
But I don't see understand that seeing the libraries from individual familymembers can help you to clean-up anything: that are personal affairs and is very difficult for everyone just because of the unavoidable bulks.

PS: I don't understand what you mean with the "new view", but that maybe a very recent update which is not arrived at me.

Answer:

Addition
If you did set-up these multiple sharings on the same day, Google will restrict the amount of data send to your account to some GB's per day. And that also maybe the reason that you don't see all accounts yet.
Just guessing of course.
If it was your plan to get all data saved into your own account for free before June 1, I am afraid that this action will be not succesfull because the whole world is doing bulk actions now for having free unlimited storage at high quality.

Answer:

Hello C2G
Could you make any progress?
Because my collegue-volonteers don't understand why the missing shares did not come through or what you can do about that.

Question: How to reset the device folder backup settings?

I don't want to back up my device folder screenshots in Google photos but it is backing up and showing the device folder name as camera . So I want to reset the device folder back up settings. Please fix it.

Answer:

Hi, Sumaiya Goni

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

If the screenshots folder happens to be clubbed with the camera folder, then regretfully, you can't do anything through the settings in Google Photos.
The only options remains.
  • Keep the backup & sync off.
  • Keep on moving the screenshots to some new folder & do not include that in backup & sync.
  • Switch on backup and sync only when you are sure you have moved all the screenshots.
  • Switch of the backup and sync once again once everything is backed up.
